Always citing the past but acting in present, her image is an oddity of the entertainment industry. Private background and acting roles flow together in the case of Minnelli who was born into the American show business in 1946. But she is more than "Cabaret", Great American Songbook, Broadway and drag model. This book is neither another sentimental biography of her so-called tragic private life nor a pure scientific examination. It simply aims to analyze her single fields of work in theater, film, television, recording studio and on concert stage that all perform together like a clockwork.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an age of ubiquitous music and countless new songs releasing every minute, the Great American Songbook endures. After all, the Songbook—that sprawling canon of popular songs, standards, and show tunes from roughly the 1920s through the 1950s—is a foundational text of American pop music. Rare indeed is the song that doesn’t in some way draw on this magnificent corpus, and rare is the person who hasn’t heard at least a few of its most enduring melodies. Nonetheless, the Songbook is broader and deeper than most listeners can imagine, and on the margins, the question of whether this or that song should be included is the source of regular arguments among scholars and buffs alike. Attempting to plumb its depths can be a daunting prospect. Enter Steven Suskin, who has been writing about music since the days that Rodgers, Arlen, and Berlin still roamed the streets of Manhattan. In this carefully curated and cheerfully opinionated guidebook, Suskin surveys 201 of the most significant selections from the Songbook, ranging from celebrated masterpieces to forgotten gems. Year by year, he puts songwriters and their contributions in their context, and explains what makes each song such a distinctive treat—whether felicitous melody, colorful harmony, compositional originality, or merely the sheer, irreducible joy of listening to it. Old and new favorites await all readers of this painstakingly compiled, enthusiastically written catalog.

Book excerpt: (Vocal Piano). When Nancy LaMott died, at the age of 43, in 1995, she left behind five magnificent CDs filled with classic songs, beautifully arranged and played by her music director, Christopher Marlowe. She also left behind numerous other recordings of her signature songs, which through the years have been, and will continue to be, released as posthumous CDs. Over the years, I, as her producer, have received many requests for those arrangements from singers and fans all over the world. Now at last, thanks to Hal Leonard, many of Nancy's most famous arrangements are available in one book, exactly as Christopher Marlowe played them. David Friedman. We're pleased to present this collection of 16 LaMott standards, including: Autumn Leaves * Downtown * I Got the Sun in the Morning * I Have Dreamed * It Might As Well Be Spring * Just in Time for Christmas * Moon River * No Moon at All * Old Devil Moon * Out of This World * Skylark * So in Love * Some Children See Him * The Surrey with the Fringe on Top * That Old Black Magic * When October Goes.

Book excerpt: In A Fine Romance, David Lehman looks at the formation of the American songbook—the timeless numbers that became jazz standards, iconic love songs, and sound tracks to famous movies—and explores the extraordinary fact that this songbook was written almost exclusively by Jews. An acclaimed poet, editor, and cultural critic, David Lehman hears America singing—with a Yiddish accent. He guides us through America in the golden age of song, when “Embraceable You,” “White Christmas,” “Easter Parade,” “Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered,” “Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man,” “My Romance,” “Cheek to Cheek,” “Stormy Weather,” and countless others became nothing less than the American sound track. The stories behind these songs, the shows from which many of them came, and the shows from which many of them came, and the composers and lyricists who wrote them give voice to a specifically American saga of love, longing, assimilation, and transformation. Lehman’s analytical skills, wit, and exuberance infuse this book with an energy and a tone like no other: at once sharply observant, personally searching, and attuned to the songs that all of us love. He helps us understand how natural it should be that Wizard of Oz composer Harold Arlen was the son of a cantor who incorporated “Over the Rainbow” into his Sabbath liturgy, and why Cole Porter—the rare non-Jew in this pantheon of musicians who wrote these classic songs shaped America even as America was shaping them. (Part of the Jewish Encounter series)

Book excerpt: Liza May Minnelli, born on March 12th, 1946, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, U.S., is an actress, dancer, choreographer and singer. Best known for her Academy Award-winning performance in Cabaret (1972), she's famous for her energetic stage presence and her powerful mezzo-soprano singing voice, being the daughter of Judy Garland and Vincente Minnelli. Liza moved to New York City during 1961, looking for theatrical work, where she began her career as a musical theatre actress, nightclub performer and traditional pop music artist. She made her professional stage debut in the Off-Broadway revival of Best Foot Forward in 1963 then won a Tony Award for starring in Flora the Red Menace during 1965. This marked the start of her lifelong collaboration with John Kander and Fred Ebb, who wrote, produced or directed many of Minnelli's future stage acts and TV shows, helping create her stage persona of a stylized survivalist, including her career-defining performances of anthems of survival; 'New York, New York', Cabaret and Maybe This Time. Along with her roles on stage and screen, this persona and her style of performance enhanced Liza's status as an enduring gay icon. Critically praised for her early non-musical screen performances, particularly in The Sterile Cuckoo (1969), Minnelli rose to international stardom, starring in Cabaret and the Emmy Award-winning TV special Liza with a Z (1972). Most of her following movies, including Lucky Lady (1975), New York, New York (1977), Rent-a-Cop (1988) and Stepping Out (1991), were panned by the critics, having bombed at the box office, Minnelli having had no further big hits except Arthur (1981).

Book excerpt: The question follows Lorna Luft to this day: "What's it like to be Dorothy's daughter?" Although by appearances glamorous and truly thrilling, growing up as the daughter of Judy Garland was anything but a journey over the rainbow. With unsparing candor, Lorna Luft offers the first-ever insider portrait of one of Hollywood's most celebrated families: a rare story of a little girl, her half-sister Liza, and her baby brother trying desperately to hang on to the mother whose life seemed destined to burn brightly but briefly. Lorna makes an extraordinary journey back into the spiral of love, addiction, pain, and loss that lurked behind a charmed facade. Filled with behind-the-scenes dramas, hilarious untold stories, and little-known details of Garland family life, Me and My Shadows is a tribute to Lorna's victory over her own past, a story of hope, of love and its limitations, and a deeply moving testament to the healing powers of embracing one's past and charting a course of self-love and discovery.
