Book excerpt: Abstract: At-risk students living in poverty in the United States benefit both educationally and emotionally from meaningful teaching that is purposefully applied directly to their lives. Service learning is a method in which students assess the needs in their community and in turn construct a method and way to successfully meet those specific needs. This paper connects the current educational needs of at-risk youth to the benefits of service learning. Forty-nine at-risk fourth and fifth grade students constructed and participated in service-learning activities designed to meet the needs present in their community. Through service learning, the participating students were able to give back to their community and increase their self-esteem.

The theory of Experiential Learning Theory by David Kolb was used to frame this research. A literature review explored middle school aged at-risk youth and the risk factors that define them, engagement of middle school aged at risk youth, including how students lack engagement and programming initiatives to further engagement, and the way in which programming initiatives can foster academic success and personal growth amongst at middle-school aged at-risk youth. The research question for this study was, how do at-risk youth who take part in the programming initiative of service-learning at St. Ignatius School understand its impact on their academic success and personal growth? Through individual interviews with students several themes emerged to describe the student experience. The research indicates that service-learning at the middle school level worked to increase students' personal growth, academic success, and insights on service-learning. The findings from this research could inform curricular decisions made at the local, state, and national level, as well as school configuration"--Author's abstract.
