Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of South Africa German south-west Africa is to-day the South Western Protectorate, brought under the British flag by South African troops led by General Botha. In German East Africa General Smuts has achieved great success at the head of troops drawn from England, India, and South Africa. Side by side the men of South Africa have fought and died, and not one of them has paused to say to his neighbour, 'are you English or Dutch?' for all alike have fought for the honour of the land in which they have a common heritage. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our South African Empire, Vol. 1 of 2 In the following chapters I have attempted to give, to the English reader especially, a conspectus of many of the principal events in South African history, and, with this object, have arranged my subject matter under certain heads, each forming an independent study in itself, but preserving, as far as possible, a chronological sequence. I have deemed this plan preferable to that of dry historical narrative where, as in the record of the Kafir wars, the memory becomes surfeited with names, dates, and all the monotonous details of a frontier campaign, and so, where the annalist in the limited sense of the word may have been long, I have been short. My desire has been to show cause and effect, to trace the workings of a policy or the drift of a line of action. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pictorial History of South Africa The new rulers of the Cape soon found themselves at loggerheads with the colonists - not only with the old-established Dutch burghers, who naturally had no sym pathy with the regime, but also with the British settlers who were now streaming into the country. The Albany settlers of 1820, who had been accustomed in England and Scotland to relatively democratic institutions, were in no mood to submit to the dictates of autocratic governors; and, after an heroic struggle to establish themselves in the new land, many of them played an important part in a prolonged agitation for freedom of the Press and representative institutions - demands which the government was forced to concede, inch by inch. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records for the Early History of South Africa Governor, and in some smaller places by a Commander. Each one in, succession was subservient to the authority of the official immediately above him. At first the. Cape communicated. With the Seventeen through the governor-general in Batavia, butlater on, owing to its geographical situation, it corresponded direct with the former, keeping, however, in touch with Batavia. In 1795 uthe Cape capitulated to the British forces, and remained an English colony until handed over to the Batavian Republic in 1803 in terms of the Treaty of Amiens, signed in the previous year. In one of its early proclamations, issued in 1803 by the new-comers, the people Of the Cape were informed that' it is the will Of the Batavian people that this settlement be no longer dependent on the High Regency at Batavia nor upon any commercial body whatsoever; the constitution has abolished all particular privileges of that nature, and the in habitants Of' the Colony of the Cape will know in future no other government but that which. The Batavian people have appointed over themselves.' The Cape remained under this government only three years, -for in January, 1806, it was once more taken by British forces. The English remained in military occupation until 1814, when bylthe Treaty of London it was irrevocably handed over to. Great Britain. In 1806 the colony comprised the greater portion Of what is now the Cape Province, and was divided into six magisterial districts - namely, ' the Cape, Stellen bosch, Swellendam, Tulbagh, Graaff - Reinet, and Uitenhage. The first three were the Oldest, and at each town or village Of those names there was a church and a court of law. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English and the Dutch in South Africa: A Historical Retrospect As past events throw a good deal of light on the present position in the Transvaal Republic, I have endeavoured to detach the thread of anglo-dutch relations from the tangled skein of South African history, and to give a plain account of the policy of the English towards the Dutch from the beginning. Most of the facts connected'with the earlier part of the story are given on the authority of Mr. George m'coll Thea], Whose personal know ledge of South Africa and its various peoples, and careful study of the Cape archives, has enabled him to compile an inexhaustible mass of valuable information in the five monumental volumes of his History. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Select Constitutional Documents Illustrating South African History: 1795-1910 This volume is intended to supply the papers and documents necessary to the study of South African history from the year 1795. It fills a gap in the series of works by various compilers which have done so much towards the careful study of the constitutions of the United Kingdom and the outlying dominions. It is hoped also that at this time when so much thought is given to imperial relations it may serve as a handy book of reference for estimating the character of the various elements that have contributed towards the building up of the youngest of the three great British Dominions. The work is really more than a volume of select documents, for it contains nearly all the instruments necessary to follow the broad lines of the constitutional history of the four colonies that formed the Union. There will also be found some mention of practically every important step taken towards the extension of British rule and the placing of native territories under European control. Three documents which will form the basis of negotiation towards the end of the War or shortly afterwards have been included in Appendices. Under the heading "Natal" are now published several papers relating to the Great Trek which have probably never been seen by anybody now alive outside official circles except two or three historians. These are included with the kind permission of Mr. Secretary Bonar Law and after him Mr. Secretary Long. Most of the Free State laws given below are to be found nowhere in London except in one private collection of books, the fine South African library collected by the late Mr. Sidney Mendelssohn. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the War in South Africa, Vol. 1: 1899-1902 The decision of His Majesty's late Government, mentioned on the first page of this history, was not finally given till November, 1905. It was, therefore, not till December 12th, 1905, that I was able to obtain approval for the form in which the political facts connected with the war are mentioned in the first chapter. Since then the whole volume has necessarily been recast, and it was not possible to go to page proof till the first chapter had been approved. Hence the delay in the appearance of the volume. I took over the work from Colonel Henderson in July, 1903. He had not then written either narrative of, or comments on, the. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some South African Recollections These recollections of a page in South African history have been written as a record for my children of the part played by their father in the Reform move ment in the Transvaal, as they were at the time too young to understand or appreciate all he did and suffered for the good cause. I have endeavoured to explain the origin of that movement, and why, for the moment, it failed. I venture to publish what I have written, as I am led to believe there are many people interested in the subject, but not sufficiently informed as to the true course of events, who would be glad to read the testimony of a South African.
