Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Geography of South Africa This book of South African Geography has been written for children of Standards III or IV. It meets the requirements for Standard III laid down in the new Geography Syllabus of the Transvaal Education De partment; and it will also be found suitable for the work of Standard IV in the Cape Province and Natal. Naturally, there has been no attempt to make the book a complete treatise on the geography of the Union of South Africa, its neighbours and dependencies; but it is hoped that it will be found to cover the ground with sufficient fullness for beginners. I must acknowledge my indebtedness to the Publicity Department of the South African Railways for permission to reproduce some of their beautiful photographs, and especially to Mr. J. Smith, the photographer of that department, for kind advice in making a selection. To friends, 'who have generously supplied me with views for reproduction, I have to express also my warmest thanks; their names are duly mentioned with the illustrations. My thanks, too, are due to the newspapers of this country for much valuable information. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Progress of South Africa, in the Century Training in such a school has the advantage of making one very careful as to accuracy, but it has the disadvantage of preventing - or at least of not encouraging - a graceful style of writing. The first object is to state nothing but facts that can be proved, and the second to state them in plain language that cannot be misinterpreted. Ornamentation of sentences or paragraphs comes in nowhere. In this volume I have made some few remarks that would have been out of place in such an abstract as I have described above, but in general the book has been prepared exactly as it would be written for the head of the government to act upon, no matter what his political views might be. It contains the indisputable truths of South African history, and each individual is left to colour those truths to suit his own inclinations, whether in favour of English, Dutch, or Bantu. As far as human power goes, it is absolutely free of partisan spirit. As a Canadian of Loyalist descent, I naturally wish to see the extension and solidification of the Empire where that can take place without wrong or injustice to others, but I have not allowed that feeling to bias my work. Omitting numerous magazine articles, pamphlets, and school histories in the English and Dutch languages, the following list of books prepared by me will show the result of my labour in the past: - South Africa as it is. King-Williamstown, 1870. Now obsolete and out of print. Compendium of South African History and Geography. Two volumes. Lovedale Missionary Institution, third edition in 1877. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Historical Geography of the British Colonies, Vol. 1 of 4: South and East Africa, Historical Readers may be reminded that the object of this book, as of the other books of the series, is simply and solely to try to give a. Connected and accurate account of British colonisa tion, its methods, agencies, and results, and of the various provinces of the British empire, recording facts and avoiding, as far as it is possible to do so, controversial topics. The book has been written and should be read from that point of view. Where any views are expressed, they are my own alone. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Emigrant Boers in South Africa: Or the Wanderings and Wars of the Emigrant Farmers From Their Leaving the Cape Colony to the Acknowldegment of Their Independence by Great Britain The emigration of the Boers from the Cape Colony and the establishment of the two Republics in the interior of South Africa have never before this been recorded in detail. The most complete account, indeed, previously given, is that in my "Compendium of South African History and Geography" (454 demy octavo pages), the third edition of which was published at the Lovedale Missionary Institution in 1877. For that work I received my information partly from bluebooks and earlier authors, and partly from narratives which I obtained from a great many individuals, European and native, who had been actors in the events described. I happened to be in possession of unusual facilities for collecting oral information, and I availed myself of them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geography of South and East Africa, Vol. 2 South africa, taking the Zambesi River as its northern boundary, contains at the present time five British colonies, two of which, viz. The Cape Colony and Natal, are self governing colonies, While the other three, Basutoland, the Transvaal, and the Orange River Colony, are Crown colonies, though of course the former differs entirely from the latter two in Character. It also contains the Bechuana land Protectorate, which stretches north to the British South Africa Company's territory and the Zambesi. In addition to this area there is the territory of the Royal British South Africa Company, now known as Southern Rhodesia, con sisting of Mashonaland and Matabeleland 1. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geography of Africa South of the Zambesi This question, and especially that portion Of it which concerns native education, I have drawn freely upon an original paper on this subject read before the Fellows of the Royal Colonial Institute, and printed in vol. Xv. Of their Proceedings. Together with notices of a more purely geographical character I have introduced many remarks as to the wealth, industries, character, and languages of the numerous races living in South Africa, for which I am indebted partly to the usual and accepted sources at hand for a writer on South Africa, and partly to my own' notes and Observations collected carefully during a seven years' residence in South Africa itself. There is one great fact which is very conspicuous in that country. It is not a land like North America, to which European immigration is directed on a very large scale and the statistics of the country prove this. This may be accounted for by the fact that in the Cape Colony at least the land is divided into very large farms held chiefly by Dutch owners, who are extremely tenacious of this form of property. They do not sell up and go north as Americans sell up and go west. Moreover, the land of South Africa, from descriptions given below, will be seen to be of a kind adapted rather to the farmer on a large scale than to the small agriculturist. In the east the teeming Kafi'ir races occupy the land and provide the labour market of the Colony. Still, there would seem to be a fair number of Openings for farmers and agriculturists with a small amount of capital at their command, who may bring down the price of the loaf in South Africa, which is very high. In the towns and mining centres artisans and craftsmen of all descriptions are well paid. This book is designed to be principally an educational. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from South Africa of to-Day Transvaal, the rise of the Chartered Company, and the Matabele campaign. But on all essential points in the political situation, and even the geography, I was as ignorant as South Africans would be of the Indian frontier. I had only this advantage, that for the last ten years almost my sole occupation in life had been travelling in little known countries and reporting what I saw and heard there. SO as soon as I had put the last remaining touches on my book of travels then about to be published, I eagerly read up the works on South African history and travel which I had brought on board for the purpose of forming in my mind a groundwork on which to build. On my arrival in Cape Town, in the beginning of December, I found the Situation in the Transvaal was fast reaching a crisis. Mr. Lionel Phillips, the President of the Chamber of Mines at Johannes burg, had but recently made a speech in which he detailed the disabilities under which the huge gold mining industry laboured, and hinted in strong terms that, were concessions of some sort not granted by the Boer Government, the Uitlanders (or foreign residents) might be compelled to resort to force to gain their ends and everywhere people were saying that trouble was pending.
