Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There's radiation in the walls of the Eighth Block Tower. Salt covers the hallways. The food and water is poisonous. A giant green brain pulsates under the roof and pumps electric venom through long black veins running through the apartment building. The residents are trapped and losing their minds. Sanity is a myth. Sickness is life. In Book One of this series, there are three stories. In "Hypnagogia" we meet two residents, Buzz and Magus. While vacuuming dark matter to feed their god, they accidentally kill another god in the process, setting off a bizarre chain of events. In "The Invalids," Samantha and Norm discover a mysterious microphone in each of their apartments. They decide to investigate, tracing the wires down into the basement of the tower, uncovering a disturbing link between the microphones and a string of bizarre, unsolved murders. In the final tale, "Under Green Brain," a resident named Crater plugs his ears with a set of earbuds, listening to old self help tapes in order to control his obsession with the hum of radiation inside the walls. He refuses to believe he's been affected by the poisonous tower and is irritated by the madness infecting the others. After a fateful meeting with another resident, he lets go of his inhibitions and dives head first into the madness he's always denied, opening his mind to fantastic visions and wondrous beasts. But he can't help but wonder...is any of it real?

Book excerpt: Bible and Bedlam first critically questions the exclusion and stereotyping of certain biblical characters and scholars perceived as 'mad', as such judgements illustrate the 'sanism' (prejudice against individuals who are diagnosed or perceived as mentally ill) perpetuated within the discipline of Western biblical studies. Second, it seeks to highlight the widespread ideological 'gatekeeping' - 'protection' and 'policing' of madness in both western history and scholarship - with regard to celebrated biblical figures, including Jesus and Paul. Third, it initiates creative exchanges between biblical texts, interpretations and contemporary voices from 'mad' studies and sources (autobiographies, memoirs etc.), which are designed to critically disturb, disrupt and displace commonly projected (and often pejorative) assumptions surrounding 'madness'. Voices of those subject to diagnostic labelling such as autism, schizophrenia and/or psychosis are among those juxtaposed here with selected biblical interpretations and texts.

A miser is a Scrooge, a strong man a Samson, a beautiful woman a modern-day Helen of Troy. From classical mythology to modern movies and TV shows, this revised and updated third edition explains the meanings of more than 2,000 allusions in use in modern English, from Abaddon to Zorro, Tartarus to Tarzan, and Rambo to Rubens. Based on an extensive reading program that has identified the most commonly used allusions, this fascinating volume includes numerous quotations to illustrate usage, drawn from sources ranging from Thomas Hardy and Charles Dickens to Bridget Jones's Diary. In addition, the dictionary includes a useful thematic index, so that readers not only can look up Medea to find out how her name is used as an allusion, but also can look up the theme of "Revenge" and find, alongside Medea, entries for other figures used to allude to revenge, such as The Furies or The Count of Monte Cristo. Hailed by Library Journal as "wonderfully conceived and extraordinarily useful," this superb reference--now available in paperback--will appeal to anyone who enjoys language in all its variety. It is especially useful for students and writers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: OUR PROTAGONIST is pretty sure he's just committed a murder. The body is newly dead, he's the only one around, and a quick look at the evidence suggests he's guilty as sin. Also, he's totally insane. A rare brain condition causes his memories to reset every day, and because of this, he often wakes up in strange places with no memory of how he got there. He can't even remember his own name. When he's not racking his brain over his shoddy memory, he's arguing incessantly with a disembodied voice that doesn't seem to belong to him, one he can only hear inside his head. He may not know much about the troubling situation he just woke up to, but he knows, without a doubt, that he's completely f*cked. While the odds are certainly stacked against him, there may be hope for our protagonist yet, for clutched in the corpse's cold, clammy hands is a handwritten tome that suggests not only his innocence, but also reveals some bizarre and dangerous secrets, leading him to believe his own apartment building may be to blame... or is, at the very least, an accomplice. That sounded better inside his head. Luckily he's not the only one trying to solve the case. The book also leads him to a group of outcasts who are in the midst of their own investigation. The only problem? They all suspect one another! One thing's for certain, someone inside the tower is a cold-blooded killer. Can our protagonist solve the murder before he falls asleep and his memories reset? Or worse, before the killer strikes again? Find out in HOLUS BOLUS. You'll be pushed to the very edge of sanity!

Book excerpt: Born in a shabby tenement in Victorian London, young Tom Bedlam is employed stoking the furnaces in a massive porcelain factory; he is son to a father he has never met, and sibling to a baby who vanished at birth. But in spite of these disadvantages, he is a positive spirit, cunning in his pursuit of love, unflinchingly loyal to his friends, and possessed of a deep, passionate soul. More than anything, he wishes to bring the loose strands of his estranged family together. After Tom’s mother dies, a mysterious family benefactor appears who offers to pay for the boy’s education. For a factory urchin this is good luck indeed, and Tom is whisked away to an exclusive private boarding school called Hammer Hall. The school is a crucible of variously privileged, predatory, meek, and noble boys, and although Tom gathers crucial clues there about his lost brother, he finds himself caught between warring forces and makes a Faustian pact that will haunt his adult life. As Tom becomes a man, his quest assumes grander proportions, a search for his lost innocence but an attempt to create the family he dreamed of in childhood. His experiences will challenge his decency and force him to weigh his character against the pitfalls of loyalty, patriotism, love, and familial duty. Tom Bedlam shows how small deeds in childhood can resonate for a lifetime, and how the bonds of family ultimately prevail against the devastating march of progress and human folly. Most of all, it is a journey with a good friend. Charming, whimsical, passionate, and funny–there’s no better companion than Tom Bedlam.

Insect and road monsters scour the desert. Bodies morph into new constructions, only partially human and searching for conclusion. Tongues entwine in an embrace of benthos, while mermaids and jellyfish glow in tandem. The moon is waiting. Dream. (back cover description by Jane Camp)

Book excerpt: More than fifty specialists have contributed to this new edition of volume 1 of The Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature. The design of the original work has established itself so firmly as a workable solution to the immense problems of analysis, articulation and coordination that it has been retained in all its essentials for the new edition. The task of the new contributors has been to revise and integrate the lists of 1940 and 1957, to add materials of the following decade, to correct and refine the bibliographical details already available, and to re-shape the whole according to a new series of conventions devised to give greater clarity and consistency to the entries.
