Bella was fourteen and wanted to be normal. Sophia was up for anything that involved skipping school. Together, they shouldered backpacks, walked away from their California life of all-night births, carpool schedules, and Cal Skate, and criss-crossed India and Nepal for eight months—a journey that led them to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the tree where the Buddha sat, and the arms of Amma the Divine Mother. From the banks of the Ganges to the Himalayan roof of the world, this enthralling memoir is an unforgettable odyssey, a moving meditation on modern family life, and a spiritual quest, written with humor and honesty—and filled with love and awe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learning to Love moves beyond the media and policy stereotypes that conflate arranged marriages with forced marriages. Using in-depth interviews and participant observations, this book assembles a rich and diverse array of everyday marriage narratives and trajectories and highlights how considerations of romantic love are woven into traditional arranged marriage practices. It shows that far from being a homogeneous tradition, arranged marriages involve a variety of different matchmaking practices where each family tailors its own cut-and-paste version of British-Indian arranged marriages to suit modern identities and ambitions. Pande argues that instead of being wedded to traditions, people in the British-Indian diaspora have skillfully adapted and negotiated arranged marriage cultural norms to carve out an identity narrative that portrays them as "modern and progressive migrants"–ones who are changing with the times and cultivating transnational forms of belonging.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first book in the new Foundations in Global Studies series offers a fresh, comprehensive, multidisciplinary introduction to South Asia. The variations in social, cultural, economic, and political life in this diverse and complex region are explored within the context of the globalising forces affecting all regions of the world. In a simple strategy that all books in the series employ, the volume begins with foundational material (including chapters on history, language, and, in the case of South Asia, religion), moves to a discussion of globalisation, and then focuses the investigation more specifically through the use of case studies. The cases expose the student to various disciplinary lenses that are important in understanding the region and are meant to bring the region to life through subjects of high interest and significance to today's readers. Resource boxes, an important feature of the book, are included to maintain currency and add utility. They offer links that point readers to a rich archive of additional material, connections to timely data, reports on recent events, official sites, local and country-based media, visual material, and so forth. A website developed by Syracuse University's South Asia Center will feature additional graphic, narrative, and case study material to complement the book.

Book excerpt: Grandsy’s eyes light up for just a few moments and then the sparkle dies out. “I’m too tired to go out for food,” she said. “No big deal,” Ray replies. But it is a big deal! Grandsy is in some kind of funk! Something IS really wrong, although no one is being direct about it. Later, Ray discovers that Grandsy has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Dementia. How can Ray battle this insidious disease and bring her beloved Grandsy back to life? Ray has learned the power of the sacred Quest, and if there ever was a need for one, it is now. Fa had told Ray stories of the Elixir of Immortality residing in Shambhala, a hidden kingdom accessible only through the sacred Quest. Using clues Fa left in a storage locker, Ray plays on her Mum’s own desire to find Fa. In the darkest and most exciting Ray Adventure yet, Ray reaches new heights of deception and misdirection that launch them on a journey into an ancient dystopian world hidden beneath Nepal. Little do they know it, but Ray and her Mother have arrived at the most turbulent moment in the political history of Nepal. Ray’s Mum is invited on a double date with a member of Nepal’s royal family. Flattered and fed up with Ray’s double-dealing, her Mum goes on her own adventure. That very night the royal family is massacred and Ray’s Mum is taken hostage. Ray enlists the help of Devi - a trained protector of Shambhala, and a Gurkha pilot who has a surprising knack of blacking out to avoid going against a direct order. Ray lands the float plane in a narrow canyon on the Kali Gandaki river. Together they succeed in rescuing her Mother from the well guarded Ranighat palace. Returning to her Quest for Shambhala, Ray parachutes into the Yalbang Monastery, literally running into the Buddha in the courtyard. There she meets the caregiver for Alexandra David-Neel, the greatest adventurer of the inner and outer realms, who shares with Ray the long-kept secret location to the entrance of Shambhala. The action ratchets up a notch at a Bon-Po ceremony attended by scores of wrathful deities. Ray and Devi enter a tum-mo competition that reveals to them the hidden powers of the breath and mind. Ray learns she can melt ice on a frozen lake through her body heat alone!.. Following the ceremony, an enigmatic Bon-Po shaman leads Ray to the entrance of Shambhala. Once inside, she discovers it’s a false Shambhala that traps people for many lifetimes, addicting them to hallucinatory local honey. Are the Elixir of Immortality & Shambhala false hopes? Could it be that she had the answer to her Quest all along?

Today, the majority of the world's population lives in a country with falling marriage rates, a phenomenon with profound impacts on women, gender, and sexuality. In this exceptionally crafted ethnography, Sarah Lamb probes the gendered trend of single women living in India, examining what makes living outside marriage for women increasingly possible and yet incredibly challenging. Featuring the stories of never-married women as young as 35 and as old as 92, the book offers a remarkable portrait of a way of life experienced by women across class and caste divides, from urban professionals and rural day laborers, to those who identify as heterosexual and lesbian, to others who evaded marriage both by choice and by circumstance. For women in India, complex social-cultural and political-economic contexts are foundational to their lives and decisions, and evading marriage is often an unintended consequence of other pressing life priorities. Arguing that never-married women are able to illuminate their society's broader social-cultural values, Lamb offers a new and startling look at prevailing systems of gender, sexuality, kinship, freedom, and social belonging in India today.
