Book excerpt: A New York Times bestseller! From John Flanagan, author of the worldwide bestselling Ranger's Apprentice (soon to be a major motion picture)—the first in a new prequel series featuring one of our favorite Rangers, Halt! When Halt and Crowley discover that the ambitious Morgarath has been infiltrating the Rangers in order to corrupt the Corps, the young Rangers travel north to find Prince Duncan, seeking a royal warrant to stop Morgarath before it is too late. By weakening the Rangers, the most powerful force in support of the King, Morgarath plans to steal the throne. Yet when Halt and Crowley arrive in Gorlan, they discover just how close Morgarath’s scheme is to success. Morgarath has a plan to discredit the Prince and alienate him from his father. At the same time, the Baron of Gorlan has been conspiring to win the trust and admiration of the Council of Barons to further his plan. If the young Rangers are to prevent the coup from succeeding, they will have to tread a dangerous path, which leads them to a thrilling climax at the annual tournament at Gorlan, where a series of bitter duels must be fought and won. This origin story brings readers to a time before Will was an apprentice, and lays the groundwork for the epic battles that will culminate with The Ruins of Gorlan and The Burning Bridge—Books 1 and 2 of the Ranger’s Apprentice series.

Download or read book Formative Fictions written by Tobias Boes and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2012-11-15 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bildungsroman, or "novel of formation," has long led a paradoxical life within literary studies, having been construed both as a peculiarly German genre, a marker of that country's cultural difference from Western Europe, and as a universal expression of modernity. In Formative Fictions, Tobias Boes argues that the dual status of the Bildungsroman renders this novelistic form an elegant way to negotiate the diverging critical discourses surrounding national and world literature. Since the late eighteenth century, authors have employed the story of a protagonist's journey into maturity as a powerful tool with which to facilitate the creation of national communities among their readers. Such attempts always stumble over what Boes calls "cosmopolitan remainders," identity claims that resist nationalism's aim for closure in the normative regime of the nation-state. These cosmopolitan remainders are responsible for the curiously hesitant endings of so many novels of formation. In Formative Fictions, Boes presents readings of a number of novels—Goethe's Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship, Karl Leberecht Immermann's The Epigones, Gustav Freytag's Debit and Credit, Alfred Döblin's Berlin Alexanderplatz, and Thomas Mann's Doctor Faustus among them—that have always been felt to be particularly "German" and compares them with novels by such authors as George Eliot and James Joyce to show that what seem to be markers of national particularity can productively be read as topics of world literature.
Download or read book Bearwalker written by Joseph Bruchac and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2009-02-17 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Joseph Bruchac, the author of the award-winning middle-grade thrillfest Skeleton Man, comes another creepy tale inspired by the folklore of indigenous Americans. Baron has always been fascinated by bears—their gentle strength and untamed power. But the Bearwalker legend, passed down by his Mohawk ancestors, tells of a different kind of creature—a terrible mix of human and animal that looks like a bear but is really a bloodthirsty monster. The tale never seemed to be more than a scary story . . . until a class camping trip deep in the Adirondacks, when Baron comes face-to-face with an evil being that is all too real.

Book Synopsis The Sorcerer's Apprentice by : Richard W. Rolfs
Download or read book The Sorcerer's Apprentice written by Richard W. Rolfs and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a critical study of a man who helped Hitler into power and continued to serve him until the very end of the Third Reich. The book argues that other biographies of Franz von Papen have failed to portray a complete account of his life. This book, going beyond offering a mere profile of von Papen's peronality, gives a critical examination of his life and the effects that his errors in judgement had upon his world. The author studies how von Papen's exaggerated sense of duty to the Fatherland blinded him to the consequences of his service to the Nazis and made it impossible for him to ever fully break his association with the Hitler regime. The book, with many pictures and offering much descriptive detail, should appeal to scholars in the field of modern German history. It should also serve as a valuable reference source in any college course on Nazi Germany and should also be useful in any college or university library. At the same time, anyone interested in German history from 1933 to 1945 should appreciate this study.
