Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bards of Bon-Accord, 1375-1860 Various works purporting to deal with Scottish minor poets and poetry have within recent years been placed before the public - some of them excellent so far as they went, others little better than mere catchpennies, crude and unreliable all of them defective, because the field was too wide for any one man to master or one work contain. I have long felt certain that an adequate presentation of such a subject was only possible through each shire or district receiving separate treatment - hence The Bards of eon-accord. Though the plan proposed in this work was to deal with those writers only, who, connected by birth or residence with our north-eastern district, have published up to 1860, yet its subject is brought down to a much more recent date - living writers, however, with one exception, being excluded from the body of the work. In the Appendix of Fugitive Poetry this latter restriction has been discarded, and notices of living writers whose effusions engaged public attention prior to 1860 are there given. In the bibliography forming part II. Of the Appendix, biographical notes have frequently been added, in order to render the work as fairly complete as the limits of one volume would allow. The treatment of the whole subject is chronological, and dates, more or less approximative, have been given at the top of each page, so that a reader may know at once the period to which any author belongs. Book excerpt: In 1832 the Scottish ballad collector Peter Buchan of Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, presented an anthology of risqué‚ and convivial songs and ballads to a Highland laird. When Professor Francis James Child of Harvard was preparing his magisterial edition of The English and Scottish Popular Ballads, he made inquiries about it, but it was not made available in time to be considered for his work. On his death it was presented to the Child Memorial Library at Harvard. Because of its unseemly materials, the manuscript languished there since, unprinted, though referred to now and again, and a few items from time to time made an appearance. The manuscript has now been transcribed with full annotation and with an introduction on the compiler, his times, and the Scottish bawdy tradition. It contains the texts (without tunes) of seventy-six bawdy songs and ballads, along with a long-lost scatological poem attributed to the Edinburgh writer James “Balloon” Tytler. Appendices give details of Buchan's two published collections of ballads. Additionally, there is a list of tale types and motifs, a glossary of Scots and archaic words, a bibliography, and an index. The High-Kilted Muse brings to light a long-suppressed volume and fills in a great gap in published bawdy songs and ballads.

Book excerpt: In the summer of 1411, the ageing Donald of Isla, Lord of the Isles, invaded mainland Scotland with a huge, battle-hardened army, only to be fought to a bloody standstill on the plateau of Harlaw, fifteen miles from Aberdeen, a town he had threatened to sack. One of the greatest battles in Scottish history, described by hardened mediaeval chroniclers as 'atrocious', 'Reid Harlaw' left some 3,000 dead and wounded. Dismissed by Scott as a 'Celt v. Saxon' power struggle, it has faded from historical memory, other than in the north-east of Scotland. Written records in Latin, Scots, Gaelic and English are presented in their original form, and with transcriptions and translations. Two major ballads are analysed, one contemporary, and one fabricated over 350 years later - which is still sung. Lowland views dominate, because of the loss and destruction of Highland records, notably those of the Lords of the Isles themselves. The histories themselves fall into two groups - those written at or around the time, and those composed some 300 years later. These later accounts form the basis of most modern descriptions of the battle, but they tend to be romantic and highly imaginative, creating noble order where chaos once existed.
