This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Contribution to the Bibliography of Scottish Topography, Vol. 1 of 2 Sir Arthur Mitchell had at one time the intention of preparing a topographical bibliography of his native province of Moray, and to that end collected a considerable amount of material. This was not published, owing, as I understood from him, to the death of the editor or proprietor of the local newspaper in which it was to have been printed. But Sir Arthur preserved all his jottings, and continued and extended the habit he had formed of making a note of books of a topographical character. He did not limit his jottings to Moray, but noted books dealing with Scotland in general or any part of it. His notes were made largely on the unused portions of notepaper tom off letters; these were dropped as written into a succession of eardboard boxes, and they gradually accumulated into a quite serious quantity of 'scraps of paper' - as we in those peaceful pre-war days were in the habit half-humorously of calling them. The Moray slips were, of course, more or less together, but the others were in no order at all, nor had they any semblance of uniformity of arrangement. It became evident to Sir Arthur after some years that such a mass of jottings bade fair to be unmanageable. My personal acquaintance with Sir Arthur began when he was at work on his List of Tours, published in the Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland in 1901. Book excerpt: Shortlisted for the 2013 Saltire Society Scottish First Book award. Edinburgh. 1898. On the cusp of the modern age. Caleb George Cash: mountaineer, geographer, antiquarian and teacher stands at the rocky summit of Arthur's Seat. This is the story of Caleb, me and the Scottish mountains visible from Arthur's Seat. Somehow the Cashs or the Calebs didn't sound right so I have called the hills on Caleb's list The Arthurs. More than just a climbing book this is the story of a survivor. Caleb's List is a beautifully descriptive account in which Kellan MacInnes intertwines his own personal struggle with HIV with the life story of Victorian mountaineer Caleb George Cash, beginning with the moment in 1898 when Caleb stood at the top of Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh and made a list of 20 mountains visible from its summit, from Ben Lomond in the west to Lochnager in the east. MacInnes stumbled upon this long forgotten list of hills, now dubbed the Arthurs, and in this book he sets a new hillwalking challenge ... climbing the Arthurs. Drawing on history, literature and personal experience, MacInnes offers both practical and emotional insight into climbing these hills, in an account that is a must-read for hillwalkers, visitors to Edinburgh and lovers of Scotland all over the world. This is not just a book about hillwalking and history. At its heart this is powerful landscape writing that explores the strong bond between a person and the hills they love . . . The author writes with skill and considerable authority. ALEX RODDIE, author Caleb Cash himself is an important if neglected figure in the history of the Scottish outdoors and the author's personal story gives the book an emotional power unusual in a guidebook. An excellent book. CHRIS TOWNSHEND, author A triumphant debut. THE GREAT OUTDOORS A tribute to the healing power of the Scottish landscape and to survival against the odds. THE SCOTSMAN

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scottish folk literature is characterised by a wide range of creative expression: story, song, play and proverb. This anthology, first published in 1984, provides an authoritative introduction to Scottish folk literature, and is unique in that it deals with all the genres intrinsic to Scottish tradition. Its selected texts offer an unusual and diverse enjoyment to the reader, including such forms as wonder tales or Märhcen, classical ballads, riddles, jocular tales, lyric and comic and occupational folksongs, rhymes, historical and supernatural legends, and guisers’ plays. The texts chosen cover the main regional traditions of Lowland Scotland, from Galloway to the Shetlands, and span a number of centuries, through both pre- and post-industrial periods, from a sailor’s worksong of the sixteenth century to modern urban legends just recently recorded. The book is arranged in four sections, on Folk Narrative, Folksong, Folksay, and Folk Drama, each with an introduction and a bibliographical essay setting the material in context and indicating some of its international links. Folk literature itself is brought into firm focus by discussion and generic example, and the anthology as a whole illuminates substantial areas of Scottish social and cultural life.
