Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Baptist Hymnal: A Collection of Hymns and Spiritual Songs It only remains to be stated that, whenever practicable, the original text of every author has been consulted; and this text has been rigorously followed, except in cases where to the Committee of Preparation there seemed to be specially strong reasons for a change. When any change has been made, though it be only in a single import ant word, the fact is indicated by afixing an asterisk to the author's name. In these cases the author is not to be held responsible for the hymn as it stands. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Hymns and the music the church sings in worship are tangible means of expressing worship. And while worship is one of, if not the central functions of the church along with mission, service, education, justice, and compassion, and occupies a prime focus of our churches, a renewed sense of awareness to our theological presuppositions and cultural cues must be maintained to ensure a proper focus in worship. Hymns and Hymnody: Historical and Theological Introductions is a sixty-chapter, three-volume introductory textbook describing the most influential hymnists, liturgists, and musical movements of the church. This academically grounded resource evaluates both the historical and theological perspectives of the major hymnists and composers who have impacted the church over the course of twenty centuries. Volume 1 explores the early church and concludes with the Renaissance era hymnists. Volume 2 begins with the Reformation and extends to the eighteenth-century hymnists and liturgists. Volume 3 engages nineteenth century hymnists to the contemporary movements of the twenty-first century. Each chapter contains these five elements: historical background, theological perspectives communicated in their hymns/compositions, contribution to liturgy and worship, notable hymns, and bibliography. The mission of Hymns and Hymnody is (1) to provide biographical data on influential hymn writers for students and interested laypeople, and (2) to provide a theological analysis of what these composers have communicated in the theology of their hymns. We believe it is vital for those involved in leading the worship of the church to recognize that what they communicate is in fact theology. This latter aspect, we contend, is missing—yet important—in accessible formats for the current literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The publication of Baptist Hymnal 1975 has already modified the musical life of Southern Baptist churches. While conserving the hymns and gospel songs that Baptists have long loved, it has substantially increased the breadth of their hymnody. It is perhaps the first major denominational hymnal to reflect the new folk-gospel hymnody that is dynamically emerging today in American Christianity. It also draws, however, on great hymnic traditions of the past, especially those of England and Germany. It thus is a surprisingly universal collection of Christian song. It is this exciting book, developed under the editorial leadership of William J. Reynolds, which is the basis for Companion to Baptist Hymnal. The companion contains background information about the content of the hymnal--when and where texts and tunes were written, who authors and composers are, and some fascinating facts about why texts were written and how they have affected Christian life. Much of the panorama of Christian history is reflected in these pages, from the devotion of medieval monastics to the stirring lives of reformers and revivalists. Every reader who would understand Christianity stands to learn from these pages. Leaders of Christian worship, in particular, need the depth of background information that is provided here. Ministers and congregational music leaders can gain new understanding of, and appreciation for, the rich treasury of devotion that is contained in the hymnal. People who are interested in the study of Christian hymnody will find information here about recent hymns that has never been published before. Familiar material about older hymns is presented in clear and concise form. The first section of the book is arranged alphabetically by hymn text, with tunes discussed under related texts. The second section alphabetically lists authors and composers."--Dust jacket.

Book excerpt: Anne Steele (1717-1778) originally wrote her hymns to be sung in the Baptist congregation pastored by her father. The foremost female contemporary of hymn-writing giants Charles Wesley, John Newton, and William Cowper, her hymns are infused with spiritual sensitivity, theological depth, and raw emotion. She eventually published her hymns under the pseudonym, Theodosia, which means "God's Gift." She believed God had given her a gift to share. Steele's work was warmly received in her own day. Pastor and publishing pioneer of the modern English hymnal, John Rippon, included more than fifty of her hymns in the various topical sections of his wildly successful Selection of Hymns. Rippon's hymnal was popular on both sides of the Atlantic, but was especially influential during the nineteenth-century revival and renewal of English Particular Baptists. This book introduces Steele's hymns in the context of her life and times and of Rippon's hymnal. It illustrates that Steele's approach to hymn-writing is a model of biblical spirituality. Each hymn as printed in Rippon's hymnal, and thus sung by congregations and used as devotional literature, is considered. The sung theology of these congregations is a gift to the church universal and worth rediscovering in the twenty-first century.
