Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Balloon: Noteworthy Aerial Voyages, From the Discovery of the Balloon to the Present Time; With a Narrative of the Aeronautic Experiences of Mr. Samuel A. King, and a Full Description of His Great Captive Balloons and Their Apparatus Permit me to say, in conclusion, that I am a thorough believer in the system by which the Herald weather predictions are made, and that I expect to be able to demonstrate by my ocean voyage their accuracy, Professor Loomis to the contrary notwithstanding. Book excerpt: In the 21st century - the age of the budget airline - where quick and reliable air travel is available to a large segment of society, it seems hard to comprehend that it is less than 250 years since the first human took to the skies. Although the wing of the bird seemed like the most obvious natural mechanism to attempt replicate, it was actually contained hot air, as demonstrated by the Montgolfiers and their balloon, that gave birth to the era human aviation. Since the first manned balloon flight in 1783, developments have come thick and fast, the airship, the aeroplane, and finally the space shuttle. This reprint of a classic publication from 1879 contains a wealth of fascinating information on the early history of aviation. Complete with illustrations and a brand new introduction, it covers the adventures of the great aeronauts such as Coxwell and Rozier, and famous ascents like that of the Zenith. This is a wonderful work for anyone with an interest in the technology and events that defined the lighter-than-air period of aeronautics.

Book excerpt: In the 21st century - the age of the budget airline - where quick and reliable air travel is available to a large segment of society, it seems hard to comprehend that it is less than 250 years since the first human took to the skies. Beginning with the weird and wonderful early attempts at flight, such as the Benedictine monk who launched himself off Malmesbury Abbey, this book illustrates the history of the earliest and most majestic of aviation technologies, the balloon. When the Montgolfier brothers demonstrated the first hot air balloon in 1783 they ushered in 'the age of the aeronaut' an era where daring pioneers like Pilâtre de Rozier, and Jean-Pierre Blanchard risked their lives to set new records and entertain the adoring crowds. The following century was captivated by 'Balloonomania', the ascents becoming ever more ambitious, the field of scientific ballooning appearing, and the balloon even being adapted for use in warfare. It is this grand period, from the balloon's inception to the birth of the aeroplane, that is the subject of this work. Containing chapters from classic writers on aeronautical history, such as R. M Ballantyne, Camille Flammarion, W. de Fonvielle, and Benjamin Franklin, and with a generous helping of beautiful colour illustrations and contextual notes, this is a fantastic read for ballooning aficionados and new-comers to the subject alike.

This reprint of a classic publication by John A. Haddock, from 1872, details an eventful balloon ascent made by the author. The following is an except from the preface: 'Within the past two or three years I have often been requested to re-publish my account of that celebrated trip, and have at last consented to do so, in order to afford my friends and the public an opportunity of perusing it, and to enable them to comprehend how a man apparently sensible as regards business affairs and every-day life, may sometimes do a foolish thing that will seriously affect his business prospects, and cause great and unnecessary distress to his friends. For now, as I look back upon the events I am about to relate, I can but regard my balloon voyage as almost impiously hazardous and foolish, and meriting censure rather than commendation.'

Book excerpt: The germ of the invention of the balloon lies in the discovery of Mr Cavendish, made in 1766, thathydrogen gas, called inflammable air, is at least seven times lighter than atmospheric air. Foundingon this fact, Dr Black of Edinburgh proved by experiment that a very thin bag, filled with this gas, would rise to the ceiling of a room.In Dr Thomson's History of Chemistry, an anecdote, related by Mr Benjamin Bell, refers to this asfollows: -"Soon after the appearance of Mr Cavendish's paper on hydrogen gas, in which he made anapproximation to the specific gravity of that body, showing that it was at least ten times lighter thancommon air, Dr Black invited a party of friends to supper, informing them that he had a curiosity toshow them. Dr Hutton, Mr Clerk of Eldin, and Sir George Clerk of Penicuik, were of the number. When the company invited had arrived, he took them into a room where he had the allantois of acalf filled with hydrogen gas, and, upon setting it at liberty, it immediately ascended and adhered tothe ceiling. The phenomenon was easily accounted for; it was taken for granted that a small blackthread had been attached to the allantois, that the thread passed through the ceiling, and that someone in the apartment above, by pulling the thread, elevated it to the ceiling, and kept it in itsposition! This explanation was so plausible, that it was agreed to by the whole company, though, likemany other plausible theories, it turned out wholly fallacious, for, when the allantois was broughtdown, no thread whatever was found attached to it. Dr Black explained the cause of the ascent tohis admiring friends; but such was his carelessness of his own reputation, that he never gave the leastaccount of this curious experiment even to his class, and several years elapsed before this obviousproperty of hydrogen gas was applied to the elevation of balloons."Cavallo made the first practical attempts with hydrogen gas six years later, but he only succeeded incausing soap-bubbles to ascend. At last the art of aerial navigation was discovered in France, and in 1782 the first ascent was made. The triumph was achieved by Stephen and Joseph Montgolfier, sons of a wealthy paper-maker whodwelt at Annonay, on the banks of a rivulet which flows into the Rhone, not far from Lyon

Book excerpt: This book chronicles the events of Andrée's Arctic balloon expedition of 1897, which was an effort to reach the North Pole by three Swedish expedition members – S. A. Andrée, Knut Frænkel, and Nils Strindberg. Andrée, the first Swedish balloonist, proposed a voyage by hydrogen balloon from Svalbard to either Russia or Canada, which was to pass, with luck, straight over the North Pole on the way. The scheme was received with patriotic enthusiasm in Sweden, a northern nation that had fallen behind in the race for the North Pole. Unfortunately, the expedition failed to make arrive at their destination point, and all three members tragically perished due to a combination of temperature, exhaustion, and hunger when their balloon was stranded in the middle of Svalbard.
