Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Aztec-Hunters A world of wonder, undreamed of thirty years ago, ha s burst upon America in the discovery of a marvelous Age of Glory on this continent, a thousand years before the landing of Columbus. No tale of the Arabian Nights is more extraordinary, no story of exploration is more filled with excitement and romance than this discovery of the great Maya Civilization of America. In America have been found pyramids greater than the pyramids of Egypt, in America lie ruined highways comparable to the great roads of Rome, in America still stand carved temples as great as those of Ancient Greece. These have been plucked by American explorers from the maw of the tropical jungle of Honduras, Guatemala and Yucatan. Savage tribes, which have defied the white man for four centuries, still harass the expeditions sent from the United States, the jaguar and poison-snake dispute intrusion, and the blue fog of fever hangs over all. Above all these scenes of peaceful merriment rose the gloomy pyramids of many temples, ever-present reminders of the cruel and bloody religion with which the whole fair land was cursed. Book excerpt: Aztec Land by Maturin Murray Ballou Bordering upon the United States on the extreme southwest, for a distance of more than two thousand miles, is a republic which represents a civilization possibly as old as that of Egypt; a land, notwithstanding its proximity to us, of which the average American knows less than he does of France or Italy, but which rivals them in natural picturesqueness, and nearly equals them in historic interest. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Aztec God, and Other Dramas The scene of this drama is laid in Mexico near the opening of the Fifteenth Century, just when the Aztecs were beginning to overrun the country, and when, therefore, the peculiar forms of their religion may reasonably be supposed to have been comparatively unknown to the Tezcucans who, as will be shown presently, adhered, in the main, to the more mild religious observances of the ancient Toltecs. The facts with reference to the Aztec human sacrifices, the selection for these of a captive without blemish, the allotment to him of certain maidens as wives, and the general luxury and adoration with which he was surrounded up to the time when, surrendering the flowers that crowned his head and the lyre that he carried, he ascended the pyramid to have his heart torn out of him while still alive, - all these facts are sufficiently well known to substantiate the delineations of the drama. The exact religious conception which underlay these Aztec rites is not known. In the circumstances, it has been thought justifiable to surround them with a certain atmosphere of spiritual truth - though only in twilight - similar to that which is known to have formed the setting of the pagan worship of ancient Egypt and Greece. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aztec Land Having resolved to visit Mexico, the question first to be considered was how to do so in the most advantageous manner. Repairing to the office of Messrs. Raymond Whitcomb, in Boston, after a brief consultation with those experienced organizers of travel, the author handed the firm a check for the cost of a round trip to Mexico and back. On the following day he took his seat in a Pullman parlor car in Boston, to occupy the same section until his return from an excursion of ten thousand miles. A select party of ladies and gentlemen came together at the same time in the Fitchburg railroad station, most of whom were strangers to each other, but who were united by the same purpose. The traveler lives, eats, and sleeps in the vestibule train, while en route, in which he first embarks, until his return to the starting-point, a dining-car, with reading and writing rooms, also forming a part of the train. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Aztec Treasure-House: A Romance of Contemporaneous Antiquity "God sends nuts to them who have no teeth: " which ancient Spanish proverb of contrariety comes strongly to my mind as I set myself to this writing. By nature am I a studious, book-loving man, having a strong liking for quiet and orderliness. Yet in me also is a strain that urges me, even along ways which are both rough and dangerous, to get beyond book-knowledge, and to examine for myself the abstractions of thought and the concretions of men and things out of the consideration whereof books are made. And I hold that it is because I have thus sought for truth in its original sources, instead of resting content with what passes for truth, being detached fragments of fact which other men have found and have cut and polished to suit themselves, that I have gathered to myself more of it, and in its rude yet perfect native crystals, than has come into the possession of any other modern investigator. Book excerpt: Excerpt from By Right of Conquest: Or With Cortez in Mexico The conquest of Mexico, an extensive empire with a numerous and warlike population, by a mere handful of Spaniards is one of the romances of history; indeed, a writer of fiction would scarcely have dared to invent so improbable a story. Even the bravery of the Spaniards and the advantage of superior arms would not have sufficed to give them the victory had it not been that Mexico was ripe for disruption. The Aztecs, instead of conciliating by wise and gentle government the peoples they had conquered, treated them with such despotic harshness. That they were ready to ally them selves with the invaders and to join with them heartily against the central power; so that instead of battling against an empire single-handed, the Spaniards had really only to war with a great city, and were assisted by a vast army of auxiliaries.
