Book excerpt: Titulo: The Autobiography of Charles Darwin Autor: Charles Darwin Sinopsis: The Autobiography of Charles Darwin is an autobiography by the English naturalist Charles Darwin. Darwin wrote the text, which he entitled Recollections of the Development of my Mind and Character, for his family. He states that he started writing it on about May 28, 1876 and had finished it by August 3. The text was published in 1887 (five years after Darwin's death) by John Murray as part of The life and letters of Charles Darwin, including an autobiographical chapter. The text printed in Life and Letters was edited by Darwin's son Francis Darwin, who removed several passages about Darwin's critical views of God and Christianity. The omitted passages were later restored by Darwin's granddaughter Nora Barlow in a 1958 edition to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the publication of The Origin of Species. This edition was published in London by Collins under the title of The Autobiography of Charles Darwin 1809-1882. With the original omissions restored. Edited and with appendix and notes by his granddaughter Nora Barlow. The original is in the public domain as its copyright has expired, but the later version remains under copyright. Both are available online at Darwin Online. Biografia: Was an English naturalist and geologist, best known for his contributions to evolutionary theory. He established that all species of life have descended over time from common ancestors, and in a joint publication with Alfred Russel Wallace introduced his scientific theory that this branching pattern of evolution resulted from a process that he called natural selection, in which the struggle for existence has a similar effect to the artificial selection involved in selective breeding. Born: 12 February 1809 Died: 19 April 1882

Book excerpt: One little event during this year has fixed itself very firmly in my mind; and I hope that it has done so from my conscience having been afterwards sorely troubled by it; it is curious as showing that apparently I was interested at this early age in the variability of plants! • With respect to science; I continued collecting minerals with much zeal. I must have observed insects with some little care. I almost made up my mind to begin collecting all the insects which I could find dead; for on consulting my sister I concluded that it was not right to kill insects for the sake of making a collection. • Life there was perfectly free; the country was very pleasant for walking or riding; and in the evening there was much very agreeable conversation; not so personal as it generally is in large family parties; together with music. Nothing has left a more vivid picture on my mind than these evenings at Maer. — from this book • Autobiography of Charles Robert Darwin; (12 February 1809 – 19 April 1882) was an English naturalist and geologist; best known for his contributions to evolutionary theory. He established that all species of life have descended over time from common ancestors. This has been edited by his son Francis Darwin.

Book excerpt: The publication of Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species in 1859 is widely regarded as a turning point in knowledge of the natural world. But Darwin's theory of natural selection was not developed in a vacuum; rather, it represents the culmination of an enormous shift in scientific and popular opinion on the subject of species mutability from the late eighteenth century onward. Through her insightful introduction and engaging collection of documents, Sandra Herbert examines this era of scientific thought and the startling discoveries that led Darwin and others to the conclusion that life has evolved. A wide range of documents from over a dozen authors -- including letters, illustrations, scientific tracts, and excerpts from Darwin's own notebooks and On the Origin of Species -- offer a fascinating glimpse into this crucial era of scientific thought. Thoughtful document headnotes, questions for consideration, a chronology, and a selected bibliography provide students with additional context and pedagogical support.

Book excerpt: "I may, of course, be egregiously wrong; but I cannot persuade myself that a theory which explains several large classes of facts can be wholly wrong." - Charles Darwin, November 13, 1859 Originally published in 1892, this autobiography of the great naturalist and father of modern biology, compiled and edited by his son Francis, is a an intriguing behind-the-scenes look into the personal life of a great scientist and the development of one of the most powerful ideas of the modern era. Although a short book, it is filled with absorbing and interesting glimpses into the mind and personal experiences of the man whose discoveries have had such a profound influence on science, philosophy, and the modern scientific perspective. In the first half of the book Darwin reminisces about his early life, his family and upbringing, and his five-year voyage on the HMS Beagle, during which he made the many observations that were later to prove so critical to his formulation of evolutionary theory. The second half is devoted mainly to the Origin of Species: its foundations, development, the writing and publication process, its varied critical reception, and the gradual acceptance and growth of evolutionary theory. Also included are thoughts on his lesser-known work in geology and the fertilization of flowers, plus a selection of his letters. Contents CAMBRIDGE 1828-1831. "VOYAGE OF THE 'BEAGLE' FROM DECEMBER 27, 1831, TO OCTOBER 2, 1836." Book excerpt: These three major works by the father of evolutionary theory encompass his life, journey through the Galapagos, and landmark work on natural selection. On the Origin of Species: In one of the most important contributions to scientific knowledge, Charles Darwin puts forth the theory that species evolve over time through the process of natural selection. Drawn from extensive research performed on various creatures living in the Galápagos Islands, his research suggests that “one species does change into another”—a revolutionary notion that has shaped much of modern biology. The Autobiography of Charles Darwin: Darwin wrote his autobiography as a family document in 1876. When it was originally published posthumously, certain portions were considered too personal or controversial and were removed. This edition restores those passages, shedding light on the women in Darwin’s life and his evolving views on religion. It also includes previously unpublished notes and letters on family matters, as well as Darwin’s dispute with Samuel Butler. The Voyage of the Beagle: From volcanoes in the Galápagos to the coral reefs of Australia, this travelogue documents the young naturalist’s historic, years-long journey at sea. Darwin’s observations of the people, places, and events he experienced make for compelling reading and offer a fascinating window into the intellectual development of his ideas about natural selection.

"My father's autobiographical recollections were written for his children, and written without any thought that they would ever be published. To many this may seem an impossibility; but those who knew my father will understand how it was not only possible, but natural. The autobiography bears the heading 'Recollections of the Development of my Mind and Character, ' and end with the following note: "- Aug. 3, 1876. This sketch of my life was begun about May 28th at Hopedene (Mr. Hensleigh Wedgwood's house in Surrey.), and since then I have written for nearly an hour on most afternoons." It will easily be understood that, in a narrative of a personal and intimate kind written for his wife and children, passages should occur which must here be omitted; and I have not thought it necessary to indicate where such omissions are made." Francis Darwin

Book excerpt: Charles Robert Darwin (1809-1882) was an English naturalist who achieved lasting fame by producing considerable evidence that species originated through evolutionary change, at the same time proposing the scientific theory that natural selection is the mechanism by which such change occurs. This theory is now considered a cornerstone of biology, and has significantly affected other disciplines such as philosophy, psychology and anthropology.

Book excerpt: The Autobiographies of Charles Darwin (1809-82) provide a fascinating glimpse into the mind of one of the world's intellectual giants. They begin with engaging memories of his childhood and youth and of his burgeoning scientific curiosity and love of the natural world, which led to him joining the expedition on the Beagle. Darwin follows this with survey of his career and ends with a reckoning of his life's work. Interspersed with these recollections are fascinating portraits - from his devoted wife Emma and his talented father, both bullying and kind, to the leading figures of the Victorian scientific world he counted among his friends, including Lyell and Huxley. Honest and illuminating, these memoirs reveal a man who was isolated by his controversial beliefs and whose towering achievements were attained by a life-long passion for the discoveries of science.
