Book excerpt: This photographic album is very likely a manuscript mock-up by Muybridge in preparation for his 1881 publication, The attitudes of animals in motion : a series of photographs illustrating the consecutive positions assumed by animals in performing various movements. In Gordon Hendricks' Eadweard Muybridge: father of the motion picture (1975), the author describes Muybridge's preparations for the published copy of these photographs by saying that Muybridge had spent late 1880 and up to May of 1881 "... processing, printing, collating, and arranging his 1878-79 photographs into a book ... published in May 1881, with the copyright date being May 17". Hendricks questions that date, however, since "...the book could not have been written, printed, bound, sent to Washington, and copyrighted in two days" (p. 116). However, it was possible to send a mock-up to LC for copyrighting purposes and perhaps this copy was one of a few attempts at putting together a well-designed mock-up for that purpose. It is further possible that the "upright" layout of this book was found to be unfriendly to a well-designed mounting of the photographic sheets, leading Muybridge to decide that an "oblong" layout would be better for the publication. This would explain the differing formats between this manuscript (upright) and those of the published copies (oblong). In Anita Ventura Mozley's introduction to the Dover ed. of Muybridge's Complete human and animal locomotion (c1979), the 1881 ed. was described thus: "The edition was small, about ten albums of original photographs, accompanied by the title page, dedication to Stanford, an index and a brief description of the equipment ...". The vol. described in this record includes only [3] leaves of prefatory text (hand-lettered in ink in block capitals), and lacks a separate leaf containing a dedication to Stanford: p. [1] is the t.p., p. [2] gives the "Plan adopted in taking these photographs" (which is not as much a description of the equipment as it is a description of the operation) and p. [3] is the index, which is keyed to the particular arrangement of photos herein (which are on 81 leaves containing 196 mounted photographs, mostly found 2 to a leaf, but sometimes as few as 1, up to as many as 5 to a leaf). All photographs have hand-inked captions in block letters and all leaves with mounted photos are hand-foliated.

Book excerpt: Best known for his contribution to the development of the motion picture, Eadweard Muybridge (1830–1904) was a pioneering photographer during his lifetime. Alongside his remarkable photographic achievements, his personal life was riddled with melodrama—including a near-fatal stagecoach accident and a betrayal by his wife that ended with Muybridge being tried for the murder of her lover. Marta Braun’s revealing biography traces the sensational events of Muybridge’s life and his personal reinventions as artist, photographer, researcher, and showman. In the 1870s, Muybridge’s photography skills were enlisted by Leland Stanford, a racehorse breeder who later founded Stanford University, to prove the “unsupported motion controversy”—the theory that during a horse’s stride, there was a moment when all four of its legs left the ground. The resulting collection of motion studies, as Braun explains, inspired Muybridge to take photography beyond landscapes to the realm of science. He went on to invent the zoopraxiscope, which captures movement too quick for the human eye to record. Most importantly, simulating motion through a series of stills, his pioneering use of sequence photography served as a forerunner to the introduction of cinematography in the 1890s. This illuminating study examines a man whose influence has resounded through generations. In Eadweard Muybridge, Braun firmly establishes Muybridge’s central contributions to the history of art, science, photography, and motion pictures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A self-educated man who knew no mathematics, Michael Faraday rose from errand boy to become one of Britain's greatest scientists. Faraday made the discoveries upon which most of twentieth-century technology is based and readers of this book will enjoy finding out in how many ways we are indebted to him. The story of his life speaks to us across the years and is a fascinating read, especially when the tale is told with the understanding and gusto that Professor Thomas-one of the UK's leading scientists-brings to the telling. Faraday took great trouble to make the latest discoveries of science, his own and others', intelligible to the layman, and the tradition he fostered has been kept alive ever since, so that the Royal Institution is as well known for its contributions to education as for its research. Written in a concise, nontechnical style, Michael Faraday and the Royal Institution: The Genius of Man and Place is a human account that provides an introduction to the roots of modern science and ways in which scientists work. The book is lavishly illustrated with drawings, cartoons, photographs, and letters-many never before published. There is no similar book on Faraday that interprets his genius in modern, everyday terms, making it understandable, interesting, and exciting reading for scientists and nonscientists alike.

Book excerpt: In his 1978 book Nelson Goodman coined the term “worldmaking.” The new-materialistic approach to the potential for meaning of extra-human materiality and its multidimensional entanglements and the intraconnectedness shifts the concept of world-making into new perspectives of interpretation. In the categories of Karen Barad’s “agential realism,” it applies to practices of knowledge production and to a diffractive (re)configuration of the world’s matter and its meaning. “World-making” gains a further specific expression in Donna Haraway’s concept of “worlding” which shows the intraactive entanglement of matter, substance, meaning, storytelling and thinking on the fundamental level of the polysemic linguistic tissue itself.

Book excerpt: A Chicago Tribune Noteworthy Book of the Year Nearly 140 years ago, in frontier California, photographer Eadweard Muybridge captured time with his camera and played it back on a flickering screen, inventing the breakthrough technology of moving pictures. Yet the visionary inventor Muybridge was also a murderer who killed coolly and meticulously, and his trial became a national sensation. Despite Muybridge’s crime, the artist’s patron, railroad tycoon Leland Stanford, founder of Stanford University, hired the photographer to answer the question of whether the four hooves of a running horse ever left the ground all at once—and together these two unlikely men launched the age of visual media. Written with style and passion by National Book Award-winner Edward Ball, this riveting true-crime tale of the partnership between the murderer who invented the movies and the robber baron who built the railroads puts on display the virtues and vices of the great American West.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, the reality we know can be recorded and reproduced true to reality using technical processes. Space and time are recreated virtually as a copy in artificial reality. However, the reproduction of virtual reality is not limited to a mere copy of what exists. A visitor to the virtual space does not have to be content with the pixelated image of the old familiar, but can encounter unreal phenomena in the illusory world that never existed in real life or are even physically impossible. This enables an expansion of the recorded reality and allows the perception of surprisingly new perspectives. A perspective denotes the perception of a fact from a certain point of view and corresponds to the way of looking at things. But a perspective is also the observation of a scene from a viewing position. From different perspectives the illusion of reality arises during the reproduction by observation. This vision is not based on imagination or hallucination, but is the basic function of virtual reality. This book describes the concepts, systems, and technologies used to create virtual reality from its ancient beginnings to the present, and provides a glimpse into a possible future. This book is a translation of the original German 1st edition Grundlagen der virtuellen Realität by Armin Grasnick, published by Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature in 2020. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation. Springer Nature works continuously to further the development of tools for the production of books and on the related technologies to support the authors.
