From an early period of life impressed with a deep conviction of the importance of the subject, and having had it almost always present to his mind, his great, his paramount anxiety was, to find out, if possible, what in regard to it might be the truth. Years, however, rolled on, without bringing to him what he so ardently desired. The study of different systems of religion, and still more of the characters of those by whom these different systems had been broached and supported, instead of satisfying, contributed but the more to puzzle and perplex him. Frequently, before his mind opened to the truth, did he fancy that he had attained to the object of his wishes; and yet, as often as, in calm sobriety, he allowed himself to consider the theory which at first sight had captivated him, he discovered about it a hitch, a something which could not abide the test of strict examination; and above all, although, by means of it, conscience might for a time have been lulled asleep, he soon found it rising again in all its majesty, asserting its natural supremacy, and charging him with guilt in a way, which the particular theory did not enable him fully, finally, and triumphantly to refute. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Universalist, Vol. 1 Our church of England friend reciprocated our sentiment and lamented, as we do, the narrowing influence thus exerted over the heart, an influence which is one of the first fruits of such divisions. We were right in our conjecture, that the title of our magazine was a designation our worthy friend had never thought of in connection with religion and theology; and, when we frankly told him we were Universalists, he looked thoughtful and exclaimed, I like that term 1 Not that it conveyed to him all that we associate with it; but by it were suggested principles in which his Christian charity and generous spirit fully sympathized - principles which, in their proper development and final results, embody our highest aspirations, and confirm our most holy faith. To maintain, on the one hand, that we are not the advocates of party - that our object is unsectarian; and to assert, on the other, a distinct individuality by the assumption of an appellative which must dis tinguish us from any and all ecclesiastical bodies, may appear somewhat paradoxical. We observe, and we are anxious to be understood, that since a magazine, such as that with whose interests we have the-honor to be identified, must have a name to distinguish it from others of the same species, just as the writer must have a name to distinguish himfrom other men, that name was adopted which should most honestly, and most accurately express or suggest the principles we designed to advocate. And, so far from proposing to ourselves another addition to those ecclesiastical bodies, of which, as such, the New Testament knows nothing whatever, and to which we believe the Scriptures to be opposed, we have been anxious, and take this opportunity seriously to protest, against any such design. And it is a satisfaction to us to know, that, among our contributors and subscribers, there are members of various communities - Christians of different denominations. Our great object is sufficiently made known in the pages Of the volume which we now have the pleasure to present to our readers. It is indebted to Martin Luther in the treatment of faith and sacraments, to Martin Bucer in what is said of divine will and predestination, and to the later scholastics for teaching involving unsuspected implications of freedom in the relation of church and state. The book is prefaced by a letter to Francis I. As this letter shows, Institutes was composed, or at least completed, to meet a present necessity, to correct an aspersion on Calvin's fellow reformers. The French king, wishing to suppress the Reformation at home, yet unwilling to alienate the reforming princes of Germany, had sought to confound the teachings of the French reformers with the attacks of Anabaptists on civil authority. "My reasons for publishing the Institutes," Calvin wrote in 1557, "were first that I might vindicate from unjust affront my brethren whose death was precious in the sight of the Lord, and next that some sorrow and anxiety should move foreign people, since the same sufferings threaten many." "The hinges on which our controversy turns," says Calvin in his letter to the king, "are that the Church may exist without any apparent form" and that its marks are "pure preaching of the word of God and rightful administration of the sacraments." The opening chapter of the Institutes is perhaps the best known, in which Calvin presents the basic plan of the book. There are two general subjects to be examined: the creator and his creatures. Above all, the book concerns the knowledge of God the Creator, but "as it is in the creation of man that the divine perfections are best displayed," there is also an examination of what can be known about humankind. After all, it is mankind's knowledge of God and of what He requires of his creatures that is the primary issue of concern for a book of theology. In the first chapter, these two issues are considered together to show what God has to do with mankind (and other creatures) and, especially, how knowing God is connected with human knowledge.
