Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide to the Aseptic Treatment of Wounds It was with the belief that a service of some value might be rendered to the American profession, including practitioners and students, that I have undertaken the translation of this work. The flattering reception given to the first and second editions in Germany, and the fact of the very early translation of the former into several foreign languages, justified the inference that this might prove a timely and serviceable contribution to English medical literature. The improved knowledge of micro-organisms and of their influence in the causation of the transmissible wound diseases has so completely revolutionized surgical ideas, and led to such extensive alterations in surgical methods, that a demand seems to have been created for a concise treatise which would embrace the advances made and plainly indicate the present relations of the results of bacteriological study to surgery. To practitioners who have not had the opportunity of observing the character of work done in the modern operating arena, a manual of this kind must be of particular value. The simplest surgical procedure - a catheterization, the administration of a hypodermic injection, or the dressing of even the slightest wound requires for the insurance of its successful issue and the avoidance of danger, an accurate understanding of the principles of asepsis; in the performance of all major operations such knowledge is imperative. It builds on and expands the NICE Guidelines to provide a practical approach with supporting evidence. The new edition has been extensively updated and expanded to include key aspects of management, ranging from setting up an orthoplastic service, through to dealing with the bone and soft tissue injures, complications such as infection, and patient rehabilitation and psychological care. The book is primarily aimed at trainee plastic, orthopaedic and trauma surgeons (particularly for expanding knowledge and examination revision) but would also appeal to established surgeons to improve patient care. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public and political concern about the increasing prevalence of diabetes has prompted major concern about treatment of patients with the condition. Foot complications are some of the commonest causes of hospitalisation of people with diabetes and if not treated well often lead to amputation. There is evidence that 85% of these amputations can be prevented by better understanding of the problem and by multi-disciplinary teams working more effectively together. This has been recognised and NICE have recently published guidelines on diabetic foot complications as have Diabetes UK and NHS Diabetes. These have been successful in raising awareness of the problem but the local multi-disciplinary teams need clear practical advice on how to manage the foot in diabetes and deliver high quality care. With the current interest in improving outcomes for patients with foot complications this is an ideal time to make a practical evidence-based handbook available. This book will provide clear practical guidelines on how to manage all aspects of the foot in diabetes as well as an in-depth analysis of the most recent evidence. The book will be based on care pathways with algorithms for each section so it would be of practical value in any clinic in primary or secondary care. It will appeal to a wide range of health care professionals treating people with diabetes: vascular surgeons and trainees, orthopaedic surgeons, diabetes specialist nurses, podiatrists and tissue viability nurses.

Book excerpt: Expanding on the National Research Council's Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, this book deals specifically with mammals in neuroscience and behavioral research laboratories. It offers flexible guidelines for the care of these animals, and guidance on adapting these guidelines to various situations without hindering the research process. Guidelines for the Care and Use of Mammals in Neuroscience and Behavioral Research offers a more in-depth treatment of concerns specific to these disciplines than any previous guide on animal care and use. It treats on such important subjects as: The important role that the researcher and veterinarian play in developing animal protocols. Methods for assessing and ensuring an animal's well-being. General animal-care elements as they apply to neuroscience and behavioral research, and common animal welfare challenges this research can pose. The use of professional judgment and careful interpretation of regulations and guidelines to develop performance standards ensuring animal well-being and high-quality research. Guidelines for the Care and Use of Mammals in Neuroscience and Behavioral Research treats the development and evaluation of animal-use protocols as a decision-making process, not just a decision. To this end, it presents the most current, in-depth information about the best practices for animal care and use, as they pertain to the intricacies of neuroscience and behavioral research.

This book was released on 2003-06-05 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an absorbing account of the continuing battle to control hospital infections, from the earliest days of hospital care when bad air or miasma was thought to be the cause, to the present day and the emergence of antibiotic-resistant 'superbugs' such as MRSA and necrotizing fasciitis. It succeeds on many levels: as a fascinating social history of hospital care from mediaeval times, when patients endured verminous conditions, to the present day; as a survey of the rise, fall and emergence of new nosocomial infections; and as a chronological account of the emergence of medical microbiology and infection control. The pivotal roles of key personalities such as Joseph Lister, Florence Nightingale, Louis Pasteur and Robert Koch are highlighted, and the history of this subject illuminates not only why hospitals and infections have had such an intimate and long relationship but one that seems destined to continue well into the future.
