Book excerpt: Excerpt from Science and Faith This lecture upon Science and Faith, in which an attempt is made to deal upon general lines with difficulties arising out of the very general misconception as to the true nature and func tion of exact science, forms the first of the second series of Westminster Lectures delivered in the Cathedral Hall at Westminster in 1906. In dealing with such a misconception as is involved in the supposition that there are contradictions between the exact results Of Science and the dogma Of Revelation, a critical and an argumentative treatment is to a certain extent unavoidable. In accordance, however, with the plan of exposition adopted in these lectures, this treatment is emphasised as little as the nature of the subject will permit; and the positive and constructive element, at which the Westminster Lectures aim, is adopted in SO far as it is possible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Credentials of Science: The Warrant of Faith At the invitation of the union theological seminary of new york city, and delivered in the Adams Chapel of the Seminary during the early spring of 1887, the course of eight lectures closing on Easter Eve. The material was subsequently con siderably amplified, and delivered as a course of twelve lectures before the Lowell Institute of Bos ton, closing on Christmas Eve of the same year. The lectures have been printed as thus extended, although in some cases the limitations of a lecture hour compelled a division of subjects, which are here united under the same heading, thus reducing the number of chapters in the book to ten. The mo tive of the work is sufficiently indicated by its title, and requires no further introduction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aspects of Religious and Scientific Thought: Selected From the Spectator Ment of worship, nor obviously effective in stimu lating devotion; and the proper place for such abridged statements of doctrine, even supposing them accurately to express the convictions of the existing generation of Churchmen (which can hardly be said of the present Creeds), would appear to be a manual of instruction rather than a formula of worship. Nothing certainly could warrant the introduction of any avowal into a devotional service, intended for men of many shades of belief, which gives the maximum of offence to those who do not hold it, and at the same time produces the minimum of devotional effect, but Mr. Sidgwiclc, in thus judging of the function and effect of recited creeds, and in describing them as being merely abridged statements of doctrine, ' misses entirely, as it seems to me, the mood of sentiment which originally caused their introduction into acts of worship, and the secret of the power they still exer cise. In fact, the very intellectual bewilderments and scepticisms which make men so reluctant to Sign creeds, and so anxious to Simplify them, lend an immeasurable depth of gratitude and even joy to the confession of the solid bases of fact, in which Chris tians find, as they conceive, the historical ground work of their faith. In precise proportion to the number of influences which threaten to undermine faith and which embarrass the dim and perilous way to it, whether these be, as in the world of martyrs, chiefly moral and only secondarily intel lectual, or as it may at least often be in our own day, chiefly intellectual, and only secondarily moral, in that proportion must be the rest of heart, and the glad sense of exercising a faculty Of Vision which only God's grace can bestow, while confessing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible, Science, and Faith This being the case, the man of science is not only thoroughly untrammelled in his work, but he has absolutely nothing to apprehend, so far as his faith is concerned, from the most searching and the most pro found investigations which may be instituted in any of the manifold departments of historical or scientific research and criticism. On the contrary, he welcomes every genuine contribution to science as a precious addition to the already vast store of knowledge, and he encourages the most thorough investigation in every line of human inquiry as something which is sure to issue in results which shall not only be of value to science, but which shall also be of priceless worth in illustrating and corroborating the truths of faith as well. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foundations of Faith: Being a Consideration of the Grounds of Religious Belief, and Especially of the Evidences of Divine Revelation in the Religion of the Bible One who ascends a mountain sees the landscape below changing on his view from every new point of observation. The general features of forest and field, river and plain, are much the same, but the outlines of the picture are changed. The horizon falls further away; new mountains show their misty tops, and new realms come faintly into View. Meantime objects near at hand appear to change in, relative importance; some that were conspicuous sink out of sight, and others, which they for a time concealed, stand out in bold pro file. Increasing knowledge furnishes to each succeeding generation a new view point from which to contem plate religion, natural or revealed. In this change of view we still recognize the old staple supports of faith - arguments which will forever stand firm from age to age; but new truths also come into view, and the old arguments give new suggestions. They change in their relative value when viewed through a changed perspective. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Science a Stronghold of Belief The general plan Of the volume is to present a plain sketch Of the nature Of matter, force, and spirit, as far as science and common sense can decipher them; and to Show that they could not have come of themselves by haphazard and could not work solely by their own self-created powers but must have arisen, and must work, according to the design and purpose Of a Supernatural power. It will also be endeavoured to be proved, that the vital principle, or life force, is a distinct force, and a specially created thing; and, above all, that the intel lectual mind, or spirit Of man, is a quality not only superior to, but essentially different from, the mind Of animals. The author is an Old and devoted student in science, and it will be seen that his constant Object throughout is to endea vour, in a strictly scientific spirit - as distinguished from a mere blind and dogmatic faith - to reconcile modern scientific discoveries, and theories, and philosophic modes Of thought, with the Old belief in God and the Bible, such as was, and is held by so many of the wisest and best men Of the past, and Of the present. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Can the Old Faith Live With the New?: Or the Problem of Evolution and Revelation Our object in this volume is to consider the relation of the modern doctrine of Evolution to those doctrines of the Bible which bear on the development of the world; and as natural evolution is supposed to involve religious agnosticism, we have prefaced the inquiry by considering the scientific value of the religious sentiment in general. The chapters are not a series of disconnected studies, but are arranged on a principle of development, and therefore they cannot be read out of their natural order. There are two important books which have stimulated us to make this attempt - that of Mr Joseph John Murphy on 'The Scientific Bases of Faith, ' and that of Professor H. Drummond on 'Natural Law in the Spiritual World.' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The work is not argumentative, it is expository. The arguments and facts of experience on which the teaching is based, the lines on which I have been led to the position here indicated and sustained, must be or have been narrated elsewhere; partly in the Proceedings of a scientific Society, partly in other books. The position taken in this book is the result of a lifetime of scientific study; and its basis is one of fact, rather than of orthodoxy.
