Book excerpt: This publication accompanies two exhibitions that celebrate the 125th anniversary of the establishment of Geelong Gallery in 1896; that honour one of the first and greatest acquisitions to enter the collection; and that assert this Gallery's enduring commitment to the critical visions of contemporary artists.Frederick McCubbin-Whisperings in wattle boughs takes its lyrical title from McCubbin's quietly mesmerising painting of 1886, in which he depicts a solitary man in repose, contemplating the earth, listening to the rustling of the bush around him while his tea boils in the billy nearby. This evocative work sets the tone for an exhibition centred on one of the treasures of Geelong Gallery: McCubbin's much loved A bush burial 1890, the first major painting to enter the Gallery's collection, purchased through public subscription in 1900. A bush burial is brought into dialogue with a selection of other now-iconic paintings in which McCubbin redefined the Australian bush and elaborated the place and roles of human subjects within it. It is, therefore, a focussed thematic survey rather than a broad ranging retrospective of McCubbin's output and follows two recent Geelong-curated scholarly thematic exhibitions: Land of the Golden Fleece- Arthur Streeton in the Western Districts (2016) and Fred Williams in the You Yangs (2017).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Companion to Australian Art is a thorough introduction to the art produced in Australia from the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788 to the early 21st century. Beginning with the colonial art made by Australia’s first European settlers, this volume presents a collection of clear and accessible essays by established art historians and emerging scholars alike. Engaging, clearly-written chapters provide fresh insights into the principal Australian art movements, considered from a variety of chronological, regional and thematic perspectives. The text seeks to provide a balanced account of historical events to help readers discover the art of Australia on their own terms and draw their own conclusions. The book begins by surveying the historiography of Australian art and exploring the history of art museums in Australia. The following chapters discuss art forms such as photography, sculpture, portraiture and landscape painting, examining the practice of art in the separate colonies before Federation, and in the Commonwealth from the early 20th century to the present day. This authoritative volume covers the last 250 years of art in Australia, including the Early Colonial, High Colonial and Federation periods as well as the successive Modernist styles of the 20th century, and considers how traditional Aboriginal art has adapted and changed over the last fifty years. The Companion to Australian Art is a valuable resource for both undergraduate and graduate students of the history of Australian artforms from colonization to postmodernism, and for general readers with an interest in the nation’s colonial art history.

Book excerpt: Set against Iceland's stark landscape, Hannah Kent brings to vivid life the story of Agnes, who, charged with the brutal murder of her former master, is sent to an isolated farm to await execution. Set against Iceland's stark landscape, Hannah Kent brings to vivid life the story of Agnes, who, charged with the brutal murder of her former master, is sent to an isolated farm to await execution. Horrified at the prospect of housing a convicted murderer, the family at first avoids Agnes. Only Tv=ti, a priest Agnes has mysteriously chosen to be her spiritual guardian, seeks to understand her. But as Agnes's death looms, the farmer's wife and their daughters learn there is another side to the sensational story they've heard. Riveting and rich with lyricism, Burial Rites evokes a dramatic existence in a distant time and place, and asks the question, how can one woman hope to endure when her life depends upon the stories told by others?

Book excerpt: Tim Olsen is the son of arguably Australia's greatest living artist, Dr John Olsen. Son of the Brush is his fascinating, candid memoir of what it was like to grow up in the shadow of artistic genius, with all its wonder, excitement and bitter disappointments. Tim's childhood was dominated by his father's work, which took the family to Europe and to communities around Australia as John sought inspiration and artistic fellowship. Wine, food, conversation and the emerging sexual freedom of the 1960s wove a pattern of life for the family. It was both the best and worst of childhoods, filled with vibrancy and stimulation, yet fraught with anxiety and eventual sadness as John separated from Tim's mother Valerie and moved away from the family. The course of Tim's life has been set by the experiences of his childhood, and by the passion for art he inherited from both his parents (his mother was an acclaimed painter in her own right). His life has always been about art, although he has followed a different path from his parents. Having overcome and recovered from addiction, Tim is today one of Australia's most respected gallery owners, with a knowledge of art and artists forged from what is literally a lifetime immersed in the art world. Son of the Brush is a memoir about a son and his father, and what it takes to forge your own identity and chart your own course in life, but it is also about the wider world of art, artists and the joy, inspiration and sacrifices of the creative life.

Book excerpt: The history of modernist painting in Australia is a masculine narrative, one in which the projects of male artists have been privileged. This is in spite of the fact that the most interesting and innovative early modernist painting was produced by women. In an account of the painting of artists such as Grace Cossington-Smith, Margaret Preston, Grace Crowley and Ann Dangar, Jeanette Hoorn argues that it was in their painting, rather than the work of such artists as Roy de Maistre, Roland Wakelin and Frank Hinder, that the groundwork for much of early modernist practice was laid out. Hoorn argues that the work of the early women artists has been surrounded by perjorative criticism of a type which male critics reserved for the art of women.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pines, an outer Melbourne suburb down on its luck. A country in the grip of recession. Experienced collector Ron senses new possibilities: swift evictions provide hard-rubbish to scour and garage-sales have doubled. There's only one problem: since losing his wife, Ron has struggled to navigate the suburbs alone. Plus, his deteriorating health slows him down. This all changes through a chance meeting with Joseph, a troubled, withdrawn and unemployed 19-year old who knows nothing about antiques. As Joseph comes to understand and appreciate Ron's world of eccentric bargain hunters, and hopefulness, his ability to navigate a history of family violence and to see a future for himself grows. Both come to share the wild dream of finding a rare bargain such as an original Frederick McCubbin painting and making their fortune. So begins an exhilarating adventure and an unlikely and beautiful friendship. Set against the background of the early 1990s, Chasing the McCubbin is funny and sad in equal measure. A story of loneliness and the ageless desire for belonging, it will be the most heartbreaking yet feel-good novel you will read this year. 'Truly fine writing with a great sense of characters and place, sympathetic and heartfelt without being sentimental, Scaunich pulls us into a fascinating world of low stakes and petty rivalries.' — Graeme Simsion 'Authentic, subtle, evocative and alive.' — Kate Ryan
