Book excerpt: A timely and important search for architecture's missing women For a century and a half, women have been proving their passion and talent for building and, in recent decades, their enrollment in architecture schools has soared. Yet the number of women working as architects remains stubbornly low, and the higher one looks in the profession, the scarcer women become. Law and medicine, two equally demanding and traditionally male professions, have been much more successful in retaining and integrating women. So why do women still struggle to keep a toehold in architecture? Where Are the Women Architects? tells the story of women's stagnating numbers in a profession that remains a male citadel, and explores how a new generation of activists is fighting back, grabbing headlines, and building coalitions that promise to bring about change. Despina Stratigakos's provocative examination of the past, current, and potential future roles of women in the profession begins with the backstory, revealing how the field has dodged the question of women's absence since the nineteenth century. It then turns to the status of women in architecture today, and the serious, entrenched hurdles they face. But the story isn't without hope, and the book documents the rise of new advocates who are challenging the profession's boys' club, from its male-dominated elite prizes to the erasure of women architects from Wikipedia. These advocates include Stratigakos herself and here she also tells the story of her involvement in the controversial creation of Architect Barbie. Accessible, frank, and lively, Where Are the Women Architects? will be a revelation for readers far beyond the world of architecture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reflections on Architecture, Society and Politics brings together a series of thirteen interview-articles by Graham Cairns in collaboration with some of the most prominent polemic thinkers and critical practitioners from the fields of architecture and the social sciences, including Noam Chomsky, Peggy Deamer, Robert A.M. Stern, Daniel Libeskind and Kenneth Frampton. Each chapter explores the relationship between architecture and socio-political issues through discussion of architectural theories and projects, citing specific issues and themes that have led to, and will shape, the various aspects of the current and future built environment. Ranging from Chomsky’s examination of the US–Mexico border as the architecture of oppression to Robert A.M. Stern’s defence of projects for the Disney corporation and George W. Bush, this book places politics at the center of issues within contemporary architecture.

Book excerpt: A Glasgow townhouse holds within its walls the essence of Gertrude's lost mother Ailsa, someone she has been denied all knowledge of for as long as she can remember. All she has is a photograph of a young woman dressed in furs and the recurring dream of a woman in a white house. The discovery in 1940 of an attic room, which her controlling father has always kept locked, reveals a living space with a drawing board that has been used as a refuge at one time. Meanwhile in 1909 Ailsa Bray is a young and unworldly Scot, brought together with bohemian Dutch socialite Truus Schräder in the heady social and political climate of Edwardian London by a mutual interest in design. At nineteen Truus is already advocating an unconventional style of family living, deemed scandalous at the time, and will go on, in 1924, to inspire and collaborate in the development of the first truly modern house, the Rietveld Schröder House in Utrecht, with her lover and kindred spirit, De Stijl architect Gerrit Rietveld. The two women consolidate a bond of friendship and shared ideals: to live simple lives unfettered by society's norms and to design homes where women are freed from the trappings of domestic work and children flourish in open, loving and stimulating environments. Ailsa becomes the first woman to study architecture in the creative surroundings and culture of the new Mackintosh designed Glasgow School of Art and later, exiled through the Great War in the neutral Netherlands, under a Dutch modernist. She finally achieves her dream of an independent professional life with her daughter when their world falls apart. From wartime Aberdeen, to post war London fleeing a scandal, Gertrude finally returns to Glasgow in 1984 to renovate the townhouse where she feels a connection with her mother. Her life is turned upside down when a letter arrives from the Netherlands asking her to make contact at the earliest opportunity. This story, told through the dual narrative of mother and daughter, has as its backdrop a century of design, from the Glasgow Style, The Early Modernists, post war British Industrial Design to 21st Century Minimalism, as it ebbs and flows back and forth across the North Sea between Glasgow, Aberdeen, London and the Netherlands. It tells of loss and redemption through a century of change for women, and the price paid by one who dared to inhabit a profession wholly owned by men.

Book excerpt: In recent years, increasing self-awareness has led women to examine and question their environments-largely designed and structured by men-in light of their particular needs and experiences. Inevitably, these changes in consciousness have led to demands for changes in existing architectural, social, and psychological environments and for an increas

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As America's first professional female architect, Louise Blanchard Bethune broke barriers in a male-dominated profession that was emerging as a vital force in a rapidly growing nation during the Gilded Age. Yet, Bethune herself is an enigma. Due to scant information about her life and her firm, Bethune, Bethune & Fuchs, scholars have struggled to provide a complete picture of this trailblazer. Using a newly discovered archival source of photographs, architectural drawings, and personal documents, Kelly Hayes McAlonie paints a picture of Bethune never before seen. Born in 1856 in Waterloo and raised in Buffalo, New York, Bethune wanted to be an architect from childhood. In fulfilling her dream, she challenged the nation to reconsider what a woman could do. A bicycle-riding advocate for coeducation, Bethune believed in women's emancipation through equal pay for equal work. This belief would be tested during the design competition for the Woman's Building for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition, where female entrants were not paid for their work. Bethune refused to participate on principle, but nonetheless her career thrived, culminating in the most important commission of her life, Buffalo's Hotel Lafayette. A comprehensive biography of the first professional woman architect in the United States, who was also the first woman to be admitted to the American Institute of Architects, this book serves as an important addition to New York and architectural history. Book excerpt: The architect and teacher Samuel Mockbee, founder of Auburn University's Rural Studio, was an idealist who put into action one of the boldest programs in contemporary architecture. Mockbee led his students in the design and construction of homes, community centers and other essential structures in Hale County, Alabama--one of the poorest counties in the United States. Mockbee believed that architecture could play a determining role in combating the brutalities of poverty. He inspired students to create vanguard designs and utilize an array of innovative, cost-effective building materials that included scraps of carpet baled into rectangular building blocks. This combination of ingenuity and enterprise informed the unique character of Mockbee's undertaking. "Samuel Mockbee and the Rural Studio" appraises Mockbee's unique contribution, assessing how he believed that architecture, practiced as a community-oriented undertaking, could transform the social environment.
