Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Apricot in California From the above table it is learned that Riverside County has the greatest total number of trees, but Santa Clara has the greatest number in bearing, Santa Clara County ranks second in total number of trees and Ventura third. Ventura also holds third place for the number of trees in bearing. By far the greatest increase in any one county in eleven years has been in Riverside County, which moved from eleventh place in 1909 to first place in 1920. While apricots grow best in the deep, moist valley soils, they are found in abundance along the foothills of all our mountain ranges where there is sufficient moisture to support growth. Although the apricot seems to do best in gravelly or sandy soils, it does well where there is a high percentage of clay, and even in stiff adobe. The apricot, on its own roots at least, will not tolerate a waterlogged soil, but on myrobalan root it is adapted to places where the prune might do well, but where the peach or cherry would not survive. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Apricot Growing in California The principal rootstocks used for apricots are apricot, peach, and myrobalan. The apricot and peach are more generally used than the myrobalan. The apricot cannot be relied upon to make a strong union with the myrobalan, for, although the trees often grow well for a number of years, they are apt to break at the graft union under stress of heavy loads or strong winds. The apricot root is resistant to the attacks of nematodes and the Pacific peach tree borers, and for this reason is valuable in districts where these pests are known to exist. All three principal rootstocks used for apricots are more or less susceptible to crown gall. The myrobalan is thought by some growers to be more resistant to oak fungus than either the apricot or peach, and is therefore used to some extent as a rootstock for the apricot. A questionnaire submitted to the nurserymen of California by the Division of Pomology showed that the percentage of apricot trees propagated on apricot stock in the years 1923 to 1928 inclusive varied from 30 per cent to 56 per cent. The percentage on peach stock varied to approximately the same extent. The percentage of apricots on apricot stock was greater than on peach stock four years out of the six for which records were obtained. The proportion of apricots on myrobalan decreased from per cent in 1923 to about 12 per cent in 1928. A few apricots. On Davidiana stock were also propagated during this period. In 1929 approximately 46 per cent of the apricot trees propagated were on apricot root, 16 per cent on myrobalan, and 38 per cent on peach. The almond is not used as a. Rootstock for apricots. The outstanding developments in the apricot industry in this state during the past two decades have been (1) a comparatively small increase in production, (2) a slight increase in relative purchasing power, and (3) a substantial increase in bearing acreage since 1918. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Apple Growing in California With the large crop of 1926 in practically all sections, prices received for California apples were extremely low. However, the eight-year averages of total value, when compared with comparable figures of other deciduous fruits during the same period, show the value of California's apple crop to have been approximately three times that of either cherries or shipping plums, three times the almond crop, about one million and a half dollars in excess of the pear crop, and almost as great as that of apricot crop. In 1920 and 1921 rather extensive new plantings were made in Sonoma, Butte, San Bernardino, Kern, and Inyo counties. During the past five years new plantings have not been so extensive except in Sonoma and Tuolumne counties. The total number of non-bearing trees for the state now shows a slight decline, while the bearing acreage shows a gradual and consistent increase. With the exception of 1923, a heavy crop year, production has been relatively uniform. Yields on the Whole are dependable, not being so seriously affected by frosts and drought as are the orchards of the eastern states. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Growth and Differentiation in Apricot Trees The writer has shown in earlier papers that the growth of an organism, or organ, proceeds in a definite, orderly fashion, and that it is possible to express the rate of growth by a mathematical equation. This contributes nothing, of course, to our knowledge of the causes of growth, but does emphasize the fact that the form and the func tion of organisms, though variable, nevertheless are not outside the realm of exact science. With respect to apricot branches, it is known that their growth in length conforms to an equation in which the size is shown to be a definite function of the time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bill's Mistake a Story of the California Redwoods It was a warm day in early June; one of those days when you just simply cannot stay in; a day that was never made for a school-room or for study; when a dip in the surf or a hike among the redwoods would be far more preferable than a drowsy school-room; a day that meant you must be out of doors. But it was all over, anyway-for a time, at least. The last bell was ringing. Vaca tion had begun for the students of the Santa Cruz High School. Groups of boys and girls came pouring out of the doors, laughing and chattering, with happy, smiling faces; only occasionally a long-drawn face appearing among them - no doubt that of some child who had failed to be promoted. But they were all glad to be free for a long two' months to come; all were glad to get out into the beautiful summer day. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forty-One Thieves: A Tale of California On that fateful first of September, 187 9, the stage left Graniteville, as usual, at six o'clock in the morn ing. Graniteville, in Eureka Township, Nevada County, is the Eureka South of early days. The stage still makes the daily trip over the mountains; but the glamour and romance of the gold fields have long since departed. On the morning mentioned traffic was light, for people did not travel the twenty eight miles through heat and dust to Nevada City for pleasure. Too Often it was a case Of running the gauntlet from the gold fields to the railroad terminus and safety. This very morning, Charley Chu, who had thrown up his job as mender of ditches, was making a dash for San Francisco, with five hundred dollars in dust and a pistol at his belt. The other passengers were Dr. John Mason and Mamie Slocum, teacher. Mamie, rosy-checked, dark-eyed, and pretty, was only seventeen, and ought to have been at home with her mother. She was a romantic girl, however, with several beaux in Eureka Township; and now that the summer session Of school was over, she was going home to Nevada City, where there were other conquests to be made. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Judge Lynch: A Tale of the California Vineyards There was a puzzled, grieved expression on the sheriff's face as he stepped forward and laid his hand on the young man's shoulder. "Jack Scott, you are my prisoner." Jack started and shivered a little. Arrest on a charge of murder is fortunately a rare experience, and of a kind to shock the strongest nerves. But arrest at this time and place meant something worse than suspicion, confinement, and the long suspense of a trial. The young man knew this, and his mind grasped in a moment the whole significance of the situation, with the lightning speed of thought in moments of peril. For this isolated little community of San Pablo, forty miles from railroad or telegraph, cut off by the precipitous coast range from the rest of California - even from the rest of its own county - was a law unto itself. The village nestled in a narrow plain; on one side the broad Pacific, on the other the mountains clothed on their western slope with the clustered vines. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fertilizers and Covercrops for California Deciduous Orchards Another approach has been the analysis of certain tree parts. Both laboratory and field methods have been developed. With these, as with soil analyses, the results must be interpreted only with due regard for factors modifying the composition of the tissue tested. The composition of leaves will change, for example, throughout the season. Thus the nitrogen content of apricot leaves has been found in one orchard to decrease from per cent in April to per cent in August. The character and rate of change differ for the different elements and will be modified by size of crop, seasonal conditions, and cultural practices such as pruning, as well as by the available nutrients. As these facts indicate, experience with the method and knowledge of the fruit con cerned are necessary for intelligent procedure. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Presented to the University Library University of California San Diego Dwelling than that. It had evidently once belonged to smiths, armorers, cutlers, to some masters whose occupation did not dislike the Open air; it was im possible to see there, unless the iron-bound shutters were removed from both fronts, there being a door on each side of the pillar, as in many shops located at the corner of two streets. At each door, just ih side the fine stone threshold, worn smooth by cen taries, began a low wall, breast-high, on top of which was a groove, corresponding to a groove in the timber above, upon which the upper walls rested. From time immemorial, there had been heavy shutters to slide in those grooves; they were fastened, when closed, by enormous bands of iron bolted on; and, when the doors were closed and secured by similar means, the house was trans formed into a fortress. Upon examining the interior, which, during the first twenty years of this century, the people of Limoges were accustomed to see filled with old iron, copper, springs, wheel-tires, bells, and metal of all sorts from demolished buildings, those persons who were interested in this relic of the old city noticed the location of a forge flue, indicated by a long streak of soot, a detail which confirmed the conjectures of antiquarians as to the original destina tion of the shop. Oh the first floor were a bedroom and the kitchen; the second had two bedrooms; the garret was used as a store-room for more delicate objects than those tossed pell-mell about the shop. This house was at first rented, then sold to one Sauviat, a travelling peddler, who, from 1792 to. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
