Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume was first published in 1957 and was intended as an appreciation of poetry, based on the study of authors' corrected manuscripts, revised published versions, transpositions of prose into verse, and contrasted translations. A. F. Scott divides his study into five sections: the first section has photographs of manuscript poems by twenty-four poets. The second section presents for comparison the first published version of eight well-known poems, with the revisions published later. A brief history of the changes is given, so that the making of some of the poems can be followed over the years. The third section gives six poems, with the source used by the poet for his poem. The fourth section gives 34 poetical versions of twelve originals. The fifth and final section contains 120 poems, paired for contrast and comparison, unsigned, and with a specific critical subject suggested for each pair.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poems of Gratitude is a unique anthology of poetry from around the world and through the ages celebrating thanksgiving in its many secular and spiritual forms. For centuries, poets in all cultures have offered eloquent thanks and praise for the people and things of this world. The voices collected here range from Sappho, Horace, and Rumi to Shakespeare and Milton, from Wordsworth, Rilke, Yeats, Rossetti, and Dickinson to Czesław Miłosz, Langston Hughes, Yehuda Amichai, Anne Sexton, W. S. Merwin, Maya Angelou, and many more. Such beloved favorites as Gerard Manley Hopkins’s “Pied Beauty,” Robert Frost’s “Nothing Gold Can Stay,” Constantine Cavafy’s “Ithaka,” and Adam Zagajewski’s “Try to Praise the Mutilated World,” mingle with classics from China and Japan, and with traditional Navajo, Aztec, Inuit, and Iroquois poems. Devotional lyrics drawn from the major religious traditions of the world find a place here alongside poetic tributes to autumn and the harvest season that draw attention to nature’s bounty and poignant beauty as winter approaches. The result is a splendidly varied literary feast that honors and affirms the joy in our lives while acknowledging the sorrows and losses that give that joy its keenness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Family continues to be a wellspring of inspiration and learning for Blanco. His third book of poetry, Looking for The Gulf Motel is a genealogy of the heart, exploring how his family's emotional legacy has shaped—and continues shaping—his perspectives. The collection is presented in three movements, each one chronicling his understanding of a particular facet of life from childhood into adulthood. As a child born into the milieu of his Cuban exiled familia, the first movement delves into early questions of cultural identity and their evolution into his unrelenting sense of displacement and quest for the elusive meaning of home. The second begins with poems peering back into family again, examining the blurred lines of gender, the frailty of his father-son relationship, and the intersection of his cultural and sexual identities as a Cuban-American gay man living in rural Maine. In the last movement, poems focused on his mother's life shaped by exile, his father's death, and the passing of a generation of relatives, all provide lessons about his own impermanence in the world and the permanence of loss. Looking for the Gulf Motel is looking for the beauty of that which we cannot hold onto, be it country, family, or love.

Book excerpt: Papa Is a Poet: is a picture book about the famous American poet Robert Frost, imagined through the eyes of his daughter Lesley. When Robert Frost was a child, his family thought he would grow up to be a baseball player. Instead, he became a poet. His life on a farm in New Hampshire inspired him to write "poetry that talked," and today he is famous for his vivid descriptions of the rural life he loved so much. There was a time, though, when Frost had to struggle to get his poetry published. Told from the point of view of Lesley, Robert Frost's oldest daughter, this is the story of how a lover of language found his voice.

Some will leave you guessing and others you will know the ending by your understanding of the type of person within the author. So when your time comes for inspiration and poetry, say to yourself, "One Day I was Thinking About"
