Book excerpt: Fifty-two years ago [in 1966] Archbishop Michael Ramsey of Canterbury visited Rome and agreed with the Pope to inaugurate an Anglican-Roman Catholic theological dialogue. Three phases of the Anglican-Roman Catholic International Commission (ARCIC) resulted and continue to this day. ARCIC I agreed on a statement on Eucharistic Doctrine in 1971 and an Elucidation of it in 1979. The Vatican declined full endorsement of these, and in 1994 ARCIC II produced Clarifications of them, which the Vatican accepted as sufficient. Colin Buchanan, who himself published the 1971 Statement in England, has followed the international dialogue closely since 1971. He here prints all the relevant texts and examines in detail the attempted reconciling of traditional Roman Catholic eucharistic belief and Anglican reformed doctrine. His study includes Apostolicae curae and Malines, and in the modern era follows public and synodical debate, and the question of ""reception."" In Lay Presidency at the Eucharist an Anglican theological approach to controversial questions is articulated. Taylor investigates in particular what allegiance to Scripture entails, and how its authority is to be applied in the Church today. The evidence of the New Testament and early Church on the Eucharist and ministry, and how critical scholarship relates to the authority of Scripture in the life of the Church, are explored, whilst the Reformation and subsequent developments in Anglican theology and Eucharistic practice are considered. Pressure to authorize lay presidency is largely a response to a shortage of clergy to meet demand for Eucharistic worship, and alternative provision for this need is discussed, before going on to consider specific schemes. Stresses and threats of division over issues such as human sexuality have resulted in moves to enhance the Communion's central structures and instruments. However, it is becoming clear that there is little likelihood of substantial change in this direction succeeding, at least in the medium term. The challenge for Anglicanism is to make a "polity of persuasion" work more effectively. This volume seeks to identify some trends and shifts of emphasis in Anglican ecclesiology to serve that end. Jeffrey Driver argues that there is more at stake in such an exercise than Anglican unity. In an ever-shrinking, pluralist, and conflicted world, where oneness is often forced by dominance, the People of God are called to model something different. The injunction of Jesus, "it is not so among you," challenged his followers to use power and live in community in a way that contrasted with what occurred "among the Gentiles" (Mark 10:41-45). This is why the sometimes tedious debates about authority and structure in the Anglican Communion could actually matter--because they might have something to say about being human in community, about sharing power and coexisting, about living interdependently on a tiny and increasingly stressed planet. The Anglican experiment in dispersed authority, for all its grief, could be a powerful gift.
