Leahy, PhD, director of the American Institute for Cognitive Therapy We all get angry sometimes. Book excerpt: Anger kills. We’re speaking here not about the anger that drives people to shoot, stab, or otherwise wreak havoc on their fellow humans. We mean instead the everyday sort of anger, annoyance, and irritation that courses through the minds and bodies of many perfectly normal people. • If your immediate impulse when faced with everyday delays or frustrations—elevators that don’t immediately arrive at your floor, slow-moving supermarket lines, dawdling drivers, rude teenagers, broken vending machines—is to blame somebody; • If this blaming quickly sparks your ire toward the offender; • If your ire often manifests itself in aggressive action; then, for you, getting angry is like taking a small dose of some slow-acting poison—arsenic, for example—every day of your life. And the result is often the same: Not tomorrow, perhaps, or even the day after, but sooner than most of us would wish, your hostility is more likely to harm your health than will be the case for your friend whose personality is not tinged by the tendencies to cynicism, anger, and aggression just described. In Anger Kills, learn how to recognize the symptoms of chronic anger in yourself, avoid feelings of hostility, and deal with hostility from others.

Book excerpt: Anger and aggression are prevalent problems among people with developmental disabilities and constitute primary reasons for them to be admitted and re-admitted to institutions. They are also a key reason for the prescribing of behaviour control and anti-psychotic medication to this client group. Stimulated by growing research in this area, mental health and criminal justice professionals have begun to see the benefits of anger assessment and cognitive-behavioural anger treatment for people with developmental disabilities. There is no prior text to guide anger treatment provision to this client group. This text presents a manual-guided cognitive-behavioural anger treatment protocol, grounded in a solid theoretical framework and empirical evidence for its efficacy in clinical practice. The assessment and treatment approach is designed to engage and motivate patients with recurrent and deep-rooted anger problems and their manifestation in serious aggressive behaviour. Accompanying the treatment protocol are a number of worksheets, handouts, and exercise sheets for clinicians and clients that can be accessed online.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dyadic coping is a concept that has reached increased attention in psychological science within the last 20 years. Dyadic coping conceptualizes the way couples cope with stress together in sharing appraisals of demands, planning together how to deal with the stressors and engage in supportive or joint dyadic coping. Among the different theories of dyadic coping, the Systemic Transactional Model (STM; Bodenmann, 1995, 1997, 2005) has been applied to many studies on couples’ coping with stress. While a recent meta-analysis shows that dyadiccoping is a robust and consistent predictor of relationship satisfaction and couple’s functioning in community samples, some studies also reveal the significance of dyadic coping in dealing with psychological disorders (e.g., depression, anxiety) or severe illness (e.g., cancer, diabetes, COPD, etc.). Researchers all over the world build their research on this or other concepts of dyadic coping and many typically use the Dyadic Coping Inventory (DCI) for assessing dyadic coping. So far, research on dyadic coping has been systematically presented in two books, one written by Revenson, Kayser, & Bodenmann in 2005, focussing on emerging perspectives on couples’ coping, the other by Falconier, Randall, & Bodenmann more recently in 2016, addressing intercultural aspects of dyadic coping in African, American, Asian and European couples. This eBook gives an insight into recent dyadic coping research in different areas and countries.

Book excerpt: A Step-by-Step Program to Reduce Anger, Rage, Negativity, Violence, and Depression in Your Life If you get angry out of the blue, experience road rage, often blow off steam at your kids, get depressed for no apparent reason, or otherwise act out of control, then you need to read and heed this book. Anger is not just an emotion - it's a way of life based on all the things you eat, think, and do. Specific biological, nutritional, and psychological states feed anger. So if you don't change your lifestyle and cure your problem, you're headed for degenerative diseases that increase with age - things like diabetes, cancer, heart disease, stroke, arthritis, obesity, and addiction. In her book, author Kathleen O'Bannon, C.N.C., uses her accumulated wealth of knowledge about lifestyle-based conditions to provide a series of tests to help you diagnose what's causing your anger problem. She then guides you through a series of lifestyle changes necessary to cure it. For instance, spikes in your blood sugar after you eat a candy bar instead of a nutritious lunch cause anger attacks, as do yeast infections, a lack of B vitamins, and excess stress. Not only does O'Bannon describe the many factors that contribute to and promote anger, she provides diets, exercises, and stress management - a complete Anger Cure program - based on nearly thirty years of lifestyle counseling. Being angry is a choice you make when you allow your body to control you instead of you controlling your body. The goal of The Anger Cure is to help you learn how to become more balanced and anger-free. Are you ready to take control of your life? The choice is yours.
