Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Anatomy of the Central Nervous System of Man: And of Vertebrates in General Not without a certain does the author come with this edition before his circle of readers. Though the previously small book has now grown to larger proportions, still it presents a subject which has not previously been comprehensively treated: the comparative morphology of the central nervous system. Three parts have arisen from the original little work: parts which are so far independent of each other that they who have less interest for the more general matters and for comparative anatomy, by turning past the first two parts will find in the third a somewhat enlarged and richly-illustrated edition of the old book. Grateful for the interest which the medical profession have manifested in the work, the third part, which deals exclusively with the mammalian, and especially with the human, brain, has been carefully rewritten and enlarged through the addition of numerous figures made from photographs of sections. In order to facilitate the study from sections a complete series of frontal sections through the entire brain has been added. Part I is introductory, giving the fundamental ideas accepted at the present time. It takes into consideration also function, which was not considered in earlier editions. The second part of the book realizes finally a plan which, since the beginning of my studies in brain-anatomy, I have never allowed to escape my eye. Resting almost completely upon my own investigations, it gives a review of that which may be said, with some certainty, of the structure and course of development of the central nervous system in the vertebrate series. Those who have worked in this field, still cultivated, will, considering the difficulties which tower up everywhere, leniently judge that which is proffered. The first attempt at a general presentation, the book shows everywhere the insufficiencies which such a work must present. No one knows that better than the author himself. If, as here, the plan of the whole forbids going into details, it will not be possible to always give a sufficient foundation for that which is presented. So far as it has been possible, this has been supplied in the numerous figures whose addition has been made possible through the liberality of the publishers. This edition contains 113 figures more than the Fourth, and of the new ones, 99 are devoted to comparative anatomy. Book excerpt: This comprehensive reference is clearly destined to become the definitive anatomical basis for all molecular neuroscience research. The three volumes provide a complete overview and comparison of the structural organisation of all vertebrate groups, ranging from amphioxus and lamprey through fishes, amphibians and birds to mammals. This thus allows a systematic treatment of the concepts and methodology found in modern comparative neuroscience. Neuroscientists, comparative morphologists and anatomists will all benefit from: * 1,200 detailed and standardised neuroanatomical drawings * the illustrations were painstakingly hand-drawn by a team of graphic designers, specially commissioned by the authors, over a period of 25 years * functional correlations of vertebrate brains * concepts and methodology of modern comparative neuroscience * five full-colour posters giving an overview of the central nervous system of the vertebrates, ideal for mounting and display This monumental work is, and will remain, unique; the only source of such brilliant illustrations at both the macroscopic and microscopic levels.

Book excerpt: The works and thoughts of Santiago Ramn y Cajal in a faithful rendition of the original Spanish version, with additional facts contained in the French translation, both of which are currently quoted around 200 times each year in the scientific literature. This is the only authorized English translation and makes use of uniform nomenclature according to contemporary scientific English. Most of the illustrations are reproductions of Cajal's original art work, with cross references to the figure numbers of the Spanish and French versions, while the taxonomic glossary uses current scientific names, and their colloquial English counterparts.

This book was released on 2007-12-31 with total page 967 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present edition of The Human Central Nervous System differs considerably from its predecessors. In previous editions, the text was essentially confined to a section dealing with the various functional systems of the brain. This section, which has been rewritten and updated, is now preceded by 15 newly written chapters, which introduce the pictorial material of the gross anatomy, the blood vessels and meninges and the microstructure of its various parts and deal with the development, topography and functional anatomy of the spinal cord, the brain stem and the cerebellum, the diencephalon and the telencephalon. Great pains have been taken to cover the most recent concepts and data. As suggested by the front cover, there is a focus on the evolutionary development of the human brain. Throughout the text numerous correlations with neuropathology and clinical n- rology have been made. After much thought, we decided to replace the full Latin terminology, cherished in all previous editions, with English and Anglicized Latin terms. It has been an emotional farewell from beautiful terms such as decussatio hipposideriformis W- nekinkii and pontes grisei caudatolenticulares. Not only the text, but also the p- torial material has been extended and brought into harmony with the present state of knowledge. More than 230 new illustrations have been added and many others have been revised. The number of macroscopical sections through the brain has been extended considerably. Together, these illustrations now comprise a complete and convenient atlas for interpreting neuroimaging studies.
