Book Synopsis Toarcian (early Jurassic) Ammonoids from Western North America by : G. K. Jakobs
Download or read book Toarcian (early Jurassic) Ammonoids from Western North America written by G. K. Jakobs and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Toarcian (Early Jurassic) strata in the Queen Charlotte Islands have yielded a well-preserved and diverse ammonite fauna that provides a framework for a regional ammonite zonation for western North America described in this report. Other localities, particularly in southern Alaska and north- western British Columbia, have provided additional material contributing to the development of this zonation, which is of prime importance in determining the age of sedimentary strata and the relative timing of tectonic events. The report describes the biostratigraphy of the five western North American Toarcian ammonite zones, the occurrence and stratigraphy of Toarcian fossil occurrences in the western Cordillera, Pacific Northwest, and Queen Charlotte Islands, and biostratigraphic correlations with other areas including Europe. Systematic paleontological descriptions are provided of fossil ammonoids. The appendix includes fossil specimen locality data.

Book Synopsis Carbon Cycle and Ecosystem Response to the Jenkyns Event in the Early Toarcian (Jurassic) by : M. Reolid
Download or read book Carbon Cycle and Ecosystem Response to the Jenkyns Event in the Early Toarcian (Jurassic) written by M. Reolid and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2021-11-30 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event, also known as the Jenkyns Event, was a hyperthermal episode which occurred during the early Toarcian (c. 183 Ma; Early Jurassic) and resulted in numerous collateral effects including global warming, enhanced weathering, sea-level change, carbonate crisis, marine anoxia–dysoxia, and a second-order mass extinction. This volume presents the last advances for understanding early Toarcian environmental changes through different disciplines: biostratigraphy, micropalaeontology, palaeontology, ichnology, palaeoecology, sedimentology, integrated stratigraphy, inorganic, organic and isotopic geochemistry, and cyclostratigraphy. The study of this abrupt climate change is critical for predicting future global changes, and for understanding the complex biogeochemical interactions through time between geosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere.

Book Synopsis Conservation Palaeobiology of Marine Ecosystems by : R. Nawrot
Download or read book Conservation Palaeobiology of Marine Ecosystems written by R. Nawrot and published by Geological Society of London Special Publications. This book was released on 2023-07-03 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conservation palaeobiology tracks the history of ecosystems based on the fossil record to guide conservation decisions and contribute to the theoretical foundations of conservation biology. The accelerating pace of global change requires better understanding of the long-term resilience and adaptive capacities of ecosystems. Fossil assemblages in outcrops and cores, together with surface accumulations of skeletal remains, represent unique archives of past ecosystem dynamics and baseline community states prior to anthropogenic impacts. However, as biological data retrieved from fossil and death assemblages cannot be treated in isolation, conservation palaeobiology integrates palaeontological and geological tools to account for the nature of the stratigraphic record. This volume brings together studies that demonstrate how combining marine palaeoecological records with other types of geohistorical data (taphonomic, sedimentological, geochronological, geochemical) can inform biodiversity conservation and ecosystem management. The papers highlight novel approaches and challenges in applying geohistorical data to conservation problems, discuss the limitations imposed by time averaging, and offer both deep- and near-time perspectives on conservation palaeobiology of marine ecosystems.
Book Synopsis Systematics and the Fossil Record by : Andrew B. Smith
Download or read book Systematics and the Fossil Record written by Andrew B. Smith and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-07-15 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new text sets out to establish the key role played by systematics in deciphering patterns of evolution from the fossil record. It begins by considering the nature of the species in the fossil record and then outlines recent advances in the methodology used to establish phylogenetics relationships, stressing why fossil evidence can be crucial. The way species are grouped into higher taxa, and how this affects their utility in evolutionary studies is also discussed. Because the fossil record abounds with sampling and preservational biases, the book emphasizes that observed patterns can rarely be taken at face value. It is argued that evolutionary trees, constructed from combining phylogenetic and biostratigraphic data, provide the best approach for investigating patterns of evolution through geologic time. The only integrated text covering the study of evolutionary patterns from a phylogenetic stance.
