Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketch-Book of the American Episcopate, Vol. 2 The purpose of this book is so plain, that to write a preface seems to be "a work of Supererogation." In the "Advertisement" to the first edition of Boswell's life of Johnson, the author says: "Were I to detail the books which I have consulted, and the inquiries which I found it necessary to make by various channels, I should probably be thought ridiculously ostentatious. Let me only observe, as a specimen of my trouble, that I have sometimes been obliged to run half over London in order to fix a date correctly, which, when I had accomplished, I well knew would obtain me no praise, though a failure would have been to my discredit." I quite understood and appreciated the meaning of Boswell, long before this book was finished. Those who use it will find many dates which conflict materially with previously published statements; but in every such case the date I give is from actual records, such as Letters of Orders, private manuscript diaries, or authorities of a similar nature. I have found in some cases that even such authority is not always to be trusted. If any date or statement can be proved incorrect, I shall be very glad to have it rectified. It was not my intention to publish them in England, being con scious that much Of their contents would be interesting only to American readers, and in truth, being deterred by the severity with which American productions had been treated by the British press. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chapman's American Drawing-Book, Vol. 2: Elementary IN answer to the numerous inquiries which have been received, by mail and otherwise, in reference to the delay in the issue of the second Number of the American drawing-book, the publisher takes this method to assure the public, that this delay has been unavoidable, without a departure from that degree of excellence in its production to which he has determined to adhere in its publication. The care and attention which the author has bestowed upon every line of the work, render it imperatively necessary, that a corresponding care and attention should be given to every branch of the mechanical department. Many of the wood-cuts in the present number, may be fairly considered equal to anything that has been done on wood, either in this country or in Europe. In all the details of the work, no pains or expense has been spared, and from the unqualified approval it has received from the public, and its extensive introduction into academies and schools, a second edition of the first number has been recently printed to meet the demand. In point of cheapness, the issue of the work has been considered a daring experiment. But resting on its merits to secure an extensive circulation, it has been given to the public without doubt or hesitation, and its reception has equalled the highest expectation. The subsequent Numbers will be issued with all the despatch consistent; with a due regard to its perfection. The Second Number completes that portion of the work, which may be considered strictly Elementary, and forms. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The definitive cookbook on French cuisine for American readers: "What a cookbook should be: packed with sumptuous recipes, detailed instructions, and precise line drawings. Some of the instructions look daunting, but as Child herself says in the introduction, 'If you can read, you can cook.'" —Entertainment Weekly “I only wish that I had written it myself.” —James Beard Featuring 524 delicious recipes and over 100 instructive illustrations to guide readers every step of the way, Mastering the Art of French Cooking offers something for everyone, from seasoned experts to beginners who love good food and long to reproduce the savory delights of French cuisine. Julia Child, Simone Beck, and Louisette Bertholle break down the classic foods of France into a logical sequence of themes and variations rather than presenting an endless and diffuse catalogue of dishes—from historic Gallic masterpieces to the seemingly artless perfection of a dish of spring-green peas. Throughout, the focus is on key recipes that form the backbone of French cookery and lend themselves to an infinite number of elaborations—bound to increase anyone’s culinary repertoire. “Julia has slowly but surely altered our way of thinking about food. She has taken the fear out of the term ‘haute cuisine.’ She has increased gastronomic awareness a thousandfold by stressing the importance of good foundation and technique, and she has elevated our consciousness to the refined pleasures of dining." —Thomas Keller, The French Laundry

Todd; its clerks and check boys, is one of which any city might be proud, and is certainly appreciated by the people of Chip pewa Falls. The Stanley Brothers have also a large brick store, well filled with various kinds of goods, but the proprietors being away from home at the time of our visit, we were unable to make a tour of inspection. The new court house occupies a very sightly place, and is an attractive edifice. Its dimensions we are unable to give. The two new hotels are both large and centrally situated. We can speak of the accommodations of only one, tne Central House. Here everything is in perfect order here are landlords and landladies who know how to make their guests feel at home; here too, is a marvel a clerk who knows his business and attends to it. Some humorist, speaking of a hotel clerk, once remarked, that after said clerk had looked at him five seconds, he could not swear whether he belonged to the clerk or to himself. Mr. Harding does not so impress visitors. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Biographical Sketch Book Andrew fuller once remarked that he would rather be like the moon, which, although full of spots and imperfections, lends a useful light to men, than a meteor, with its dazzling but transient glare, exciting only the wonder of mankind. It was in the spirit of this sentiment that we compiled the following pages, embracing brief sketches, for the most part, of the lives of men who, by unwearied perseverance, have triumphed over difficulties. Born in an humble sphere, which precluded the advantages of a liberal education, we resolved, that although unable to write a learned work, we would attempt to produce a useful one. Hence, the fastidious critic who shall search for faults, will be rewarded with an abundant harvest. If, however, this volume shall serve as a hint to those so well able to write a better, a valuable end will have been attained. But, in the absence of such, we flatter ourself that the biographical sketch Boox, with all its defects, will not be entirely unacceptable to a discerning public. The needle, although unpolished, may yet serve to point the way to the pole 5 and if the examples set forth shall cheer but one sufferer, and enable him to wait with patience for the bright dawning of to-morrow, the labor will not have been in vain. It may be reached by a few miles of staging, either from the Green Bay or West Wisconsin railroad; and a project is now on foot among the citizens to build a railroad from Neillsville to connect with the Green Bay railroad, in which event her star would be rapidly in the ascendant. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An aesthetic of unoriginality shaped literary style and reader taste for decades of the nineteenth century. While critics in the twentieth century and beyond have upheld originality and innovation as essential characteristics of literary achievement, they were not features particularly prized by earlier American audiences, Claudia Stokes contends. On the contrary, readers were taught to value familiarity, traditionalism, and regularity. Literary originality was often seen as a mark of vulgar sensationalism and poor quality. In Old Style Stokes offers the first dedicated study of a forgotten nineteenth-century aesthetic, explicating the forms, practices, conventions, and uses of unoriginality. She focuses in particular on the second quarter of the century, when improvements in printing and distribution caused literary markets to become flooded with new material, and longstanding reading practices came under threat. As readers began to prefer novelty to traditional forms, advocates openly extolled unoriginality in an effort to preserve the old literary ways. Old Style examines this era of significant literary change, during which a once-dominant aesthetic started to give way to modern preferences. If writing in the old style came to be associated with elite conservatism—a linkage that contributed to its decline in the twentieth century—it also, paradoxically provided marginalized writers—people of color, white women, and members of the working class—the literary credentials they needed to enter print. Writing in the old style could affirm an aspiring author's training, command of convention, and respectability. In dismissing unoriginality as the literary purview of the untalented or unambitious, Stokes cautions, we risk overlooking something of vital importance to generations of American writers and readers.
