Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Journal of Syphilography and Dermatology, Vol. 5: Devoted to the Consideration and Treatment of Venereal and Skin Diseases Although I saw this man but once, and made no drawing of the appearances, the picture which the mirror revealed is vivid in my memory. On inspiration it puzzled me to find any inlet for the air; and it was only when he expired that I saw the air literally squeeze itself out with a faint whistling noise by the side of the posterior glottis, pressing the membranoid web out ward and escaping by its unattached posterior edge. This case taught me what a terrible degree of laryngeal stenosis may exist, and yet life be carried on, if the narrowing occur very gradually, as this must have been brought about. Indeed, although this patient could make no exertion, could not even walk, without panting fearfully, his breathing, when sitting quietly, was dis proportionately good. I have not succeeded in finding out how long this man survived. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Archives of Dermatology, 1877, Vol. 3: A Quarterly Journal of Skin and Venereal Diseases A Special Journal, devoted to a branch of medicine which has been so much neglected as Dermatology by the profession at large, must create for itself a position, and command its own audience, which it must in a measure educate up to its standard; this of course refers only to the general practitioners, who have not devoted any Special thought or study to the branch. The aim of the archives OF dermatology has been to meet the wants Of the General Practitioner, and to serve as a means Of communication between the specialist, whose whole time and thought are devoted to Skin or Venereal Diseases, and those in gen eral practice, that the daily-gained experience Of the latter may reach the former. TO this end the Editor and staff have endeavored to include within its pages reference to everything which has been reported elsewhere in these departments during the year, in addi tion to the large amount of original matter which has filled more than one half of the Journal. Many Of the original articles have undoubtedly been very special in their character, and considerable of the matter digested from other journals has been purely scien tiho, but it must be borne in mind that it is impossible to render the entire subject of Dermatology clear and interesting to those unacquainted with more than its rudiments, and that the Archives is designed to serve as a compendium of knowledge in this branch for those engaged exclusively in it, as well as an assistant to the general practitioner in managing these diseases. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexual mutilation is a global problem that affects 15. 3 million children and young adults annually. In terms of gender, 13. 3 million boys and 2 million girls are involuntarily subjected to sexual mutilation every year. While it is tempting to quantify and compare the amount of tissue removed from either gender, no ethical justification can be made for removing any amount of flesh from the body of another person. The violation of human rights implicit in sexual mutilation is identical for any gender. The violation occurs with the first cut into another person 's body. Although mutilation is a strong term, it precisely and accurately describes a condi tion denoting "any disfigurement or injury by removal or destruction of any conspicuous or essential part of the body. " While such terms as "circumcision" and "genital cutting" are less threatening to our sensitivities, they ultimately do a disservice by masking the fact of what is actually being done to babies and children. Although the courageous example of the survivors of sexual mutilation indicates that humans can certainly live and even re produce without all of their external sexualorgans, this biological phenomenon does not, however, justify subjecting a person to sexual mutilation. The remarkable resilience of the human body is a testament to the importance nature places on reproduction rather than a vindication for surgical practices that compromise this function.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how the medical profession engaged with print and literary culture to shape its identities between the 1830s and 1910s in Britain and its empire. Moving away from a focus on medical education and professional appointments, the book reorients attention to how medical self-fashioning interacted with other axes of identity, including age, gender, race, and the spaces of practice. Drawing on medical journals and fiction, as well as professional advice guides and popular periodicals, this volume considers how images of medical practice and professionalism were formed in the cultural and medical imagination. Alison Moulds uncovers how medical professionals were involved in textual production and consumption as editors, contributors, correspondents, readers, authors, and reviewers. Ultimately, this book opens up new perspectives on the relationship between literature and medicine, revealing how the profession engaged with a range of textual practices to build communities, air grievances, and augment its cultural authority and status in public life.

Book excerpt: Based on previously unexplored archival documentation, this book offers the first general overview of the history of Italian eugenics, not limited to the decades of Fascist regime, but instead ranging from the beginning of the 1900s to the first half of the 1970s. The Author discusses several fundamental themes of the comparative history of eugenics: the importance of the Latin eugenic model; the relationship between eugenics and fascism; the influence of Catholicism on the eugenic discourse and the complex links between genetics and eugenics. It examines the Liberal pre-fascist period and the post-WW2 transition from fascist and racial eugenics to medical and human genetics. As far as fascist eugenics is concerned, the book provides a refreshing analysis, considering Italian eugenics as the most important case-study in order to define Latin eugenics as an alternative model to its Anglo-American, German and Scandinavian counterparts. Analyses in detail the nature-nurture debate during the State racist campaign in fascist Italy (1938–1943) as a boundary tool in the contraposition between the different institutional, political and ideological currents of fascist racism.
