Book Synopsis The American Gentleman by : Michael James Hall
Download or read book The American Gentleman written by Michael James Hall and published by 1st Book Library. This book was released on 2002-07-18 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been said that the character of a man is like a tree and his actions, good or bad, determine the fruit. The American Gentleman strives to make life more fulfilling and is written to inspire men to adopt a personal philosophy for growth and maturity. Through observation, integrity, spiritual philanthropy, altruism and knowing "reality" is perception - a state of character can be formed for self-improvement, but more than anything else, we learn how to consciously become more considerate of others. You will not find a thousand-and-one "rules of etiquette" or a guide to hedonism in this book. Instead, you will find a gentleman's manifesto based on the life experiences and considerations of a cultured and professional American man seeking social civility and greater personal character. Not dogmatic, The American Gentleman is written with certain questions in mind: How may "chivalry" be applied today? When does it become chauvinism? Are these present customs or behaviors that may be improved? How can men and women behave more harmoniously? In other words, is there civilized human behavior that can be identified, explained and formulated into a recognized standard and then applied to our contemporary lives? As storm clouds gather on the horizon of 21st century American society, many men and women are seeking a greater meaning of life. Most troubling is the polarizing of American culture as divisive trends in gender relations, political ideology, technology and family dynamics are impacting the way Americans live. It is time for change. Simply put, The American Gentleman offers a path for men to achieve their personal goals while assisting others along the way. "I admire your consideration of the gentleman's manifesto." - C. Everett Koop, MD

Book Synopsis A Gentleman of Color by : Julie Winch
Download or read book A Gentleman of Color written by Julie Winch and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2003-06-05 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winch has written the first full-length biography of James Forten, a hero of African American history and one of the most remarkable men in 19th-century America. Born into a free black family in 1766, Forten served in the Revolutionary War as a teenager. By 1810 he had earned the distinction of being the leading sailmaker in Philadelphia. Soon after Forten emerged as a leader in Philadelphia's black community and was active in a wide range of reform activities. Especially prominent in national and international antislavery movements, he served as vice-president of the American Anti-Slavery Society and became close friends with William Lloyd Garrison to whom he lent money to start up the Liberator. His family were all active abolitionists and a granddaughter, Charlotte Forten, published a famous diary of her experiences teaching ex-slaves in South Carolina's Sea Islands during the Civil War. This is the first serious biography of Forten, who stands beside Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, Booker T. Washington, and Martin Luther King, Jr., in the pantheon of African Americans who fundamentally shaped American history.

Book Synopsis The Complete Colonial Gentleman by : Michał Rozbicki
Download or read book The Complete Colonial Gentleman written by Michał Rozbicki and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining the American planters' aspirations from the perspective of cultural theory and in the comparative context of a larger British world, Rozbicki asserts that for this emerging elite, the genteel quest was the only feasible route to identity and authority: it became a central dynamic of their lives, crucial to their ambitious struggles with provincialism and the metropolitan condescension toward colonial "upstarts." The author also shows how this determined quest played a vital but little-understood role in the construction of a new American identity, as the European model enabled the colonial elite to achieve sufficient maturity, confidence, and pride in their virtues and rights to defy the British in the 1770s. Originally asserting the gentlemanly ideals of liberty and equality against the British crown, Revolutionary gentry inadvertently cultivated them in the fertile ground of nonelite culture.
Book Synopsis Gentlemen Revolutionaries by : Tom Cutterham
Download or read book Gentlemen Revolutionaries written by Tom Cutterham and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-10-13 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the years between the Revolutionary War and the drafting of the Constitution, American gentlemen—the merchants, lawyers, planters, and landowners who comprised the independent republic's elite—worked hard to maintain their positions of power. Gentlemen Revolutionaries shows how their struggles over status, hierarchy, property, and control shaped the ideologies and institutions of the fledgling nation. Tom Cutterham examines how, facing pressure from populist movements as well as the threat of foreign empires, these gentlemen argued among themselves to find new ways of justifying economic and political inequality in a republican society. At the heart of their ideology was a regime of property and contract rights derived from the norms of international commerce and eighteenth-century jurisprudence. But these gentlemen were not concerned with property alone. They also sought personal prestige and cultural preeminence. Cutterham describes how, painting the egalitarian freedom of the republic's "lower sort" as dangerous licentiousness, they constructed a vision of proper social order around their own fantasies of power and justice. In pamphlets, speeches, letters, and poetry, they argued that the survival of the republican experiment in the United States depended on the leadership of worthy gentlemen and the obedience of everyone else. Lively and elegantly written, Gentlemen Revolutionaries demonstrates how these elites, far from giving up their attachment to gentility and privilege, recast the new republic in their own image.

Book Synopsis Revolutionary Characters by : Gordon S. Wood
Download or read book Revolutionary Characters written by Gordon S. Wood and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2006-05-18 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this brilliantly illuminating group portrait of the men who came to be known as the Founding Fathers, the incomparable Gordon Wood has written a book that seriously asks, "What made these men great?" and shows us, among many other things, just how much character did in fact matter. The life of each—Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Franklin, Hamilton, Madison, Paine—is presented individually as well as collectively, but the thread that binds these portraits together is the idea of character as a lived reality. They were members of the first generation in history that was self-consciously self-made men who understood that the arc of lives, as of nations, is one of moral progress.
