Book Synopsis Confessions of a Bad Beekeeper by : Bill Turnbull
Download or read book Confessions of a Bad Beekeeper written by Bill Turnbull and published by The Experiment. This book was released on 2011-05-10 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The popular host of BBC Breakfast recounts his many misadventures as a backyard beekeeper—“A truly wonderful read” (Diana Sammataro, PhD, coauthor of The Beekeeper’s Handbook). Bill Turnbull had no intention of becoming a beekeeper. But when he saw an ad for beekeeping classes—after a swarm of bees landed in his suburban backyard—it seemed to be a sign. Despite being stung on the head—twice—at his first hands-on beekeeping class, Turnbull found himself falling in love with the fascinating, infuriating honeybee. As a new beekeeper, Turnbull misplaced essential equipment, got stung more times—and in more places—than he cares to remember, and once even lost some bees up a chimney. But he kept at it, with a ready sense of humor and Zen-like acceptance of every mishap. And somehow, along the way, he learned a great deal about himself and the world around him. Confessions of a Bad Beekeeper chronicles Turnbull’s often hilarious and occasionally triumphant adventures in the curious world of backyard beekeeping. Along the way, he offers plenty of hard-won apiarian wisdom and highlights both the threat to our bee population and what we can do to help these vital little creatures do their wonderful work.
Book Synopsis Every Step in Beekeeping by : Benjamin Wallace Douglass

This book was released on 1921 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Index; Why keep BeesThe HiveBee BusinessHow to get the beesHive ManagementBee DiseasesHoney PlantsWinteringThe beginner in any field is always more or less at sea. There are always lit- tle, fundamental things that he wants to know and too often these same little things are the most difficult to discover. Often, too, when a man learns enough of any one subject to write a book about it, he forgets or overlooks some of the fundamental things that he learned in his own beginnings and as a result assumes that his readers know as much about his subject as he does himself. In this little book I have tried to keep in mind my own troubles when I first started to cultivate the festive bee. I then knew the creatures only as an ento- mologist would know them. To me they were merely a species of insect having certain anatomical characters. I knew their life-history in a perfunctory way, but when it came to real knowledge of their habits, I had none. But for the kindly help of the man to whom this volume is dedicated my flound- erings would have been prolonged and I would have accumulated information as I accumulated stings - ^by a painful process. A book of this size does not and can not claim to tell all there is to know on the subject of beekeeping in spite of its title. The subject is a big one and it has many sides. The beekeeper must be content to be a student, learning a little each year and with the consolation that men have spent their lives in the study only to leave many unsolved problems behind them. If the little book serves as an introduc- tion to the fascinating business of keeping bees and if it guides the steps of its read- ers in the right direction it has fulfilled its purpose. The writer has had no other object in view. B. W. D

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A successful and funny book that is sure to swell the ranks of the world’s beekeepers.” —New York Times A fascinating foray into the obsessions, friendships, scientific curiosity, misfortunes and rewards of suburban beekeeping—through the eyes of a Master Beekeeper . . . Who wants to keep bees? And why? For the answers, Master Beekeeper Frank Mortimer invites readers on an eye-opening journey into the secret world of bees, and the singular world of his fellow bee-keepers. There’s the Badger, who introduces Frank to the world of bees; Rusty, a one-eyed septuagenarian bee sting therapist certain that honey will be the currency of the future after the governments fail; Scooby the “dude” who gets a meditative high off the awesome vibes of his psychedelia-painted hives; and the Berserker, a honeybee hitman who teaches Frank a rafter-raising lesson in staving off the harmful influences of an evil queen: “Squash her, mash her, kill, kill, kill!” Frank also crosses paths with those he calls the Surgeons (precise and protected), the Cowboys (improvisational and unguarded) and the Poseurs, ex-corporate cogs, YouTube-informed and ill-prepared for the stinging reality of their new lives. In connecting with this club of disparate but kindred spirits, Frank discovers the centuries-old history of the trade; the practicality of maintaining it; what bees see, think, and feel (emotionless but sometimes a little defensive); how they talk to each other and socialize; and what can be done to combat their biggest threats, both human (anti-apiarist extremists) and mite (the Varroa Destructor). With a swarm of offbeat characters and fascinating facts (did that bee just waggle or festoon?), Frank the Bee Man delivers an informative, funny, and galvanizing book about the symbiotic relationship between flower and bee, and bee and the beekeepers who are determined to protect the existence of one of the most beguiling and invaluable creatures on earth. “A very entertaining book.” —American Bee Journal “A playful storyteller… A compelling memoir.” —Foreword Reviews “A useful how-to guide as well as an affectionate ode to nature’s pollinators and honey makers.” —Publishers Weekly “This book includes great humor and a use of allegory that reveals tremendous background knowledge.” —San Francisco Book Review “Frank’s personal stories of his beekeeping journey are entertaining, well written, and will quickly have you happily lost in the world of bees.” —Paleo Magazine "Bee People and the Bugs They Love is the bee's knees and getting a ton of buzz. Bee smart, people, and read this un-BEE-lievably interesting look at the quirky world of beekeeping." —Harlan Coben, #1 New York Times bestselling author “A delightful portrayal for non-beekeepers of what life is like for those of us who are always thinking about bees.” —Tom Seeley, author of The Lives of Bees “A fun and exciting tale of the wonder-filled world of beginner beekeeping.” —Noah Wilson-Rich, author of Bee: A Natural History , and CEO and partner The Best Bees Company
