Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In algebra there are four basic structures: groups, rings, fields and modules. In this book the theory of these basic structures is presented and the laws of composition - the basic operations of algebra - are studied. Essentially, no previous knowledge is required, it is only assumed as background that the reader has learned some linear algebra over the real numbers.

Book Synopsis Infinite Group Rings by : Donald S. Passman
Download or read book Infinite Group Rings written by Donald S. Passman and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The algebraic study of group rings was initiated in 1949 by I. Kaplansky. The subject has been pursued by a small but growing number of researchers, and has reached a point in its development where a coherent account of the basic results is needed. That is the goal of this text. The topics covered are selective, with material balanced between ring theory and group theory, and a basic one year course in algebra should provide sufficient background for readers.

Download or read book The Theory of Classes of Groups written by Guo Wenbin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the characteristics of modern algebra is the development of new tools and concepts for exploring classes of algebraic systems, whereas the research on individual algebraic systems (e. g. , groups, rings, Lie algebras, etc. ) continues along traditional lines. The early work on classes of alge bras was concerned with showing that one class X of algebraic systems is actually contained in another class F. Modern research into the theory of classes was initiated in the 1930's by Birkhoff's work [1] on general varieties of algebras, and Neumann's work [1] on varieties of groups. A. I. Mal'cev made fundamental contributions to this modern development. ln his re ports [1, 3] of 1963 and 1966 to The Fourth All-Union Mathematics Con ference and to another international mathematics congress, striking the ories of classes of algebraic systems were presented. These were later included in his book [5]. International interest in the theory of formations of finite groups was aroused, and rapidly heated up, during this time, thanks to the work of Gaschiitz [8] in 1963, and the work of Carter and Hawkes [1] in 1967. The major topics considered were saturated formations, Fitting classes, and Schunck classes. A class of groups is called a formation if it is closed with respect to homomorphic images and subdirect products. A formation is called saturated provided that G E F whenever Gjip(G) E F.
Book Synopsis Unit Groups of Classical Rings by : Gregory Karpilovsky
Download or read book Unit Groups of Classical Rings written by Gregory Karpilovsky and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to give a self-contained, up-to-date account of the structure of unit groups of classical rings. In so doing, the work draws together four areas of mathematics: ring theory, group theory, group representation theory, and algebraic number theory. The ensuing interplay between these disciplines provides a unique source of enrichment for each of them. The main theme centers on two related problems: to determine the isomorphism class of the unit group (U)R of ring R in terms of natural invariants associated with R; and to find an effective method for the construction of units of ring R. Various threads of the development are tied together to convey a comprehensive picture of the current state of the subject. Examples are provided to help research workers who need to compute explicitly unit groups of certain rings. A familiarity with basic ring-theoretic and group-theoretic concepts is assumed, but a chapter on algebraic preliminaries is included. The text is distinguished by its very clear exposition.
Book Synopsis Algebra in Action: A Course in Groups, Rings, and Fields by : Shahriar Shahriar
Download or read book Algebra in Action: A Course in Groups, Rings, and Fields written by Shahriar Shahriar and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2017-08-16 with total page 675 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text—based on the author's popular courses at Pomona College—provides a readable, student-friendly, and somewhat sophisticated introduction to abstract algebra. It is aimed at sophomore or junior undergraduates who are seeing the material for the first time. In addition to the usual definitions and theorems, there is ample discussion to help students build intuition and learn how to think about the abstract concepts. The book has over 1300 exercises and mini-projects of varying degrees of difficulty, and, to facilitate active learning and self-study, hints and short answers for many of the problems are provided. There are full solutions to over 100 problems in order to augment the text and to model the writing of solutions. Lattice diagrams are used throughout to visually demonstrate results and proof techniques. The book covers groups, rings, and fields. In group theory, group actions are the unifying theme and are introduced early. Ring theory is motivated by what is needed for solving Diophantine equations, and, in field theory, Galois theory and the solvability of polynomials take center stage. In each area, the text goes deep enough to demonstrate the power of abstract thinking and to convince the reader that the subject is full of unexpected results.

Book Synopsis Abstract Algebra by : Stephen Lovett
Download or read book Abstract Algebra written by Stephen Lovett and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 720 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Discovery-Based Approach to Learning about Algebraic Structures Abstract Algebra: Structures and Applications helps students understand the abstraction of modern algebra. It emphasizes the more general concept of an algebraic structure while simultaneously covering applications. The text can be used in a variety of courses, from a one-semester introductory course to a full two-semester sequence. The book presents the core topics of structures in a consistent order: Definition of structure Motivation Examples General properties Important objects Description Subobjects Morphisms Subclasses Quotient objects Action structures Applications The text uses the general concept of an algebraic structure as a unifying principle and introduces other algebraic structures besides the three standard ones (groups, rings, and fields). Examples, exercises, investigative projects, and entire sections illustrate how abstract algebra is applied to areas of science and other branches of mathematics. "Lovett (Wheaton College) takes readers through the variegated landscape of algebra, from elementary modular arithmetic through groups, semigroups, and monoids, past rings and fields and group actions, beyond modules and algebras, to Galois theory, multivariable polynomial rings, and Gröbner bases." Book Synopsis Topics in Group Rings by : Sudarshan K. Sehgal
Download or read book Topics in Group Rings written by Sudarshan K. Sehgal and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The group ring KG of the group G over a commutative unital ring K comprises an attractive object of study. This is one of the few algebraic structures that allow for explicit computations. Several easily formulated questions are associated with this topic. Many interesting results have been obtained in this area by using deep results and techniques from group theory, ring theory, and number theory. Most of the results presented and techniques used have a number theoretic flavor. Aimed at advanced graduate students and research mathematicians in algebra.
