Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Alcohol Factor in Social Conditions: Some Facts for Reformers The Operations of the League are directed to producing in the public mind an intelligent and conscientious conviction in regard to what should be the individual and collective attitude towards the use of Alcoholic Beverages. It Has Specialized for half a century in influencing the Medical Profession to engage in research into the nature of Alcohol and its effects, in small as well as large doses, upon the human organism in health and disease. It Has Influenced the Teaching Profession to encourage Scientific Instruction on Temperance in the Schools, into which it introduced the first chemical lectures fifty years ago. It Approached the Churches of all Denominations at their Annual Assemblies, and by the circulation of special literature; thus was created within religious circles an aggressive movement for Temperance. It Commenced to impress the Commercial Classes at the first Mansion House Meeting half a century ago, and has formed a Temperance Fellowship for the Leaders and Officials of Industrial Organisations. It Has Formulated evidence derived from conferences of City Missionaries, Poor Law Officers, School Visitors, and other Social Workers, upon the Relation of Alcohol to Child-life, Environment, Destitution and Crime. It Has Held an important Inquiry as to the Incidence of Temperance Reform to recent developments in Social Investigation, Administration and Legislation, which has afforded the useful evidence contained in the following pages. These Operations are continued, and are supplemented by upto-date measures, as opportunity is afforded by the Funds supplied by the Members of the League - who, being abstainers, subscribe 2s. 6d. annually (those contributing 10s. receive regularly the National Temperance Quarterly) - and by those who sympathise with its non-political, unsectarian, scientific and constructive methods. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alcohol use by young people is extremely dangerous - both to themselves and society at large. Underage alcohol use is associated with traffic fatalities, violence, unsafe sex, suicide, educational failure, and other problem behaviors that diminish the prospects of future success, as well as health risks â€" and the earlier teens start drinking, the greater the danger. Despite these serious concerns, the media continues to make drinking look attractive to youth, and it remains possible and even easy for teenagers to get access to alcohol. Why is this dangerous behavior so pervasive? What can be done to prevent it? What will work and who is responsible for making sure it happens? Reducing Underage Drinking addresses these questions and proposes a new way to combat underage alcohol use. It explores the ways in which may different individuals and groups contribute to the problem and how they can be enlisted to prevent it. Reducing Underage Drinking will serve as both a game plan and a call to arms for anyone with an investment in youth health and safety.

Book excerpt: Research on alcohol-related consequences has traditionally focused mainly on health aspects of alcohol consumption or effects which can be more easily quantified or measured. It is evident that alcohol has many consequences which can be characterised as `social' in nature and which are not, or not only, medical and are directly health-related. Such consequences include violence, crime, and psychosocial factors. The increasing relevance of consequences of alcohol consumption other than medical is also reflected in the second European Action Plan 2000-2004 of WHO, aiming at the prevention and reduction of harm done by alcohol to the health and wellbeing of individuals, families, and communities. This book attempts to provide a comprehensive overview of social consequences of alcohol consumption on the individual, group, organisational, and societal level. It is a result of a two-year collaborative study under the leadership of WHO-Euro with the participation of alcohol researchers from Finland, Germany, Norway, Scotland, and Switzerland. Although the book was written by experts in the field, it is targeted not only at scientists, but at all people dealing with alcohol-related problems in practice.

This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When The Natural History of Alcoholism was first published in 1983, it was acclaimed in the press as the single most important contribution to the literature on alcoholism since the first edition of Alcoholic Anonymous’s Big Book. George Vaillant took on the crucial questions of whether alcoholism is a symptom or a disease, whether it is progressive, whether alcoholics differ from others before the onset of their alcoholism, and whether alcoholics can safely drink. Based on an evaluation of more than 600 individuals followed for over forty years, Vaillant’s monumental study offered new and authoritative answers to all of these questions. In this updated version of his classic book, Vaillant returns to the same subjects with the perspective gained from fifteen years of further follow-up. Alcoholics who had been studied to age 50 in the earlier book have now reached age 65 and beyond, and Vaillant reassesses what we know about alcoholism in light of both their experiences and the many new studies of the disease by other researchers. The result is a sharper focus on the nature and course of this devastating disorder as well as a sounder foundation for the assessment of various treatments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An individual's decision to use alcohol and the frequency, quantity, and situations of use are the result of a combination of biological and social factors. Drinking is not only a personal choice, but also a matter of custom and social behavior, and is influenced by access and economic factors including levels of disposable income and cost of alcoholic beverages. Until prevention efforts cease to focus narrowly on the individual and begin to adopt broader community perspectives on alcohol problems and strategies to reduce them, these efforts will fail. The author challenges the current implicit models used in alcohol problem prevention and demonstrates an ecological perspective of the community as a complex adaptive system composed of interacting subsystems. This important volume represents a new and sensible approach to the prevention of alcohol dependence and alcohol-related problems.
