It contains the earliest short stories featuring the consulting detective Sherlock Holmes, which had been published in twelve monthly issues of The Strand Magazine from July 1891 to June 1892. The stories are collected in the same sequence, which is not supported by any fictional chronology. The only characters common to all twelve are Holmes and Dr. Watson and all are related in the first-person narrative from Watson's point of view. ♥♥The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes By Arthur Conan Doyle♥♥ In general, the stories in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes identify and try to correct social injustices. Holmes is portrayed as offering a new, fairer sense of justice. The stories were well received, and boosted the subscriptions figures of The Strand Magazine, prompting Doyle to be able to demand more money for his next set of stories. ♥♥The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes By Arthur Conan Doyle♥♥ The first story, "A Scandal in Bohemia", includes the character of Irene Adler, who, despite being featured only within this one story by Doyle, is a prominent character in modern Sherlock Holmes adaptations, generally as a love interest for Holmes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is a collection of twelve short stories. This was the earliest collection of short stories which were originally published in The Strand between 1891 and 1892. These are, as usual, narrated from the perspective of Dr. Watson the close friend and colleague of Sherlock Holmes. It is a masterful way of narrating the story as it puts the reader in the center of the action without getting exactly inside the head of Mr. Holmes which would ruin the surprise. Sir. Arthur Conan Doyle uses a great deal of 19th Century English jargon and other bits of language that have ceased being used. The annotations in this volume offer up explanations for those so that a new generation of readers can get through the material without guesswork while allowing the original vibrant text to come through. These works are meant to be enjoyed, they have been for more than one hundred years and hopefully will be enjoyed for another few hundred!

Book excerpt: The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is a collection of stories relating to the infamous character Sherlock Holmes, a notable detective who investigates various mysteries and crime set in the 1900s. George Newness publishing company first published the collection in October 1892.The collection consists of a series of twelve stories told from the view of Holmes's close friend, Dr. Watson. The stories resonate the social injustices faced by many at the time and Doyle includes stories of a king's betrayal of an opera singer, a stepfather's deception of his ward as a fictitious lover, an aristocratic crook's exploitation of a failing pawnbroker, a beggar's extensive estate in Kent; as a reference to the unjust world that many civilians lived in during the 1900s. Doyle addresses all these problems by introducing Holmes as a person who is trying to bring justice to the world by rightfully solving crimes and mysteries.

Book excerpt: The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is a compilation of twelve short Sherlock Holmes stories that was published on October 31st, 1892, and written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The character, Sherlock Holmes, was previously introduced to the world in a novel called A Study in Scarlet, in a Christmas 'annual.' Sherlock Holmes is probably the most well-known and -loved fictional detective in literature. It's interesting to note that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle actually modeled his famous detective after an associate, Dr. Joseph Bell. Dr. Bell had a long, thin nose - much as we picture Sherlock Holmes - and was very observant. He also used strong deductive skills. This leads us to the personality of the character, Sherlock Holmes. Sherlock Holmes is a private detective who has keen powers of observation. He lives at 221b Baker Street in London. He notices things that others simply don't and then he draws accurate conclusions about what he sees. In Doyle's first Holmes story, A Study in Scarlet, Holmes describes himself as someone who gets in the dumps at times and '(doesn't) open (his) mouth for days on end.' He experiences strong mood swings. He also plays the violin. But most of all, he is a master of deductive reasoning.
