Book excerpt: Set in the 17th century, Robinson Crusoe follows the eponymous Robinson Crusoe as he leaves home to make his fortune. After a series of misadventures in Africa, Crusoe is shipwrecked on a desert island for 28 years, forming much of the adventure. Crusoe's life on the island, his encounter with cannibals, and his rescue of shipwrecked Spaniards are highlights of the story. In The further adventures of Robinson Crusoe, Crusoe and Man Friday journey to Europe, then on a trading adventure to India and China. Rather than returning to Europe by ship, Crusoe's last great adventure is an overland journey across China and Siberia. Daniel Defoe (c.1659-1731) was an English writer credited with publishing the first English-language novel, ROBINSON CRUSOE. Born Daniel Foe, he wrote more than 500 works during his life, including novels and political works, and in a variety of subjects.

Book excerpt: Robinson Crusoe is a sailor from York who, on an expedition through Africa by boat, is captured by pirates and becomes a slave. He manages to escape and is helped by a Portuguese navy captain, who goes to Brazil. In this last place he settled for a time but the option arose to sail to Africa again, it was there where the ship was wrecked and he is the only survivor, managing to reach an island of which he seems to be the only inhabitant. When he finally begins to adapt to solitude and settle on the island, he discovers that he is not alone in it, since a cannibal indigenous tribe visits the island frequently for their rituals and feasts. Crusoe immediately helps one of his prisoners who was about to be executed to escape. As they met on a Friday, Crusoe calls him "Friday" and they forge a sincere friendship, despite the fact that they do not coincide in language or culture. Together they decide to help the other prisoners captured by the indigenous people, one of whom is a Spaniard who is also a castaway awaiting the arrival of a ship.

Book excerpt: 'I made him know his Name should be Friday, which was the Day I sav'd his Life...I likewise taught him to say Master' Robinson Crusoe's seafaring adventures are abruptly ended when he is shipwrecked, the solitary survivor on a deserted island. He gradually creates a life for himself, building a house, cultivating the land, and making a companion from the native whose life he saves. Daniel Defoe's enthralling story-telling and imaginatively detailed descriptions have ensured that his fiction masquerading as fact remains one of the most famous stories in English literature. On one level a simple adventure story, the novel also raises profound questions about moral and spiritual values, society, and man's abiding acquisitiveness. This new edition includes a scintillating Introduction and notes that illuminate the historical context. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Book excerpt: The Life and Adventures of Robinson Crusoe relates the story of a man's shipwreck on a desert island and his subsequent adventures. Epistolary, confessional, and didactic in form, the book is presented as an autobiography of the title character —a castaway who spends thirty years on a remote tropical island near Trinidad, encountering cannibals, captives, and mutineers, before ultimately being rescued. The story has been perceived to be based on the life of Alexander Selkirk, a Scottish castaway who lived for four years on a Pacific island called "Más a Tierra", now part of Chile, which was renamed Robinson Crusoe Island in 1966. The Further Adventures of Robinson Crusoe describes how Crusoe settled in Bedford, married and produced a family, and that when his wife died, he went off on further adventures. Crusoe first returns to his island, and after that, circumstances take him off to Madagascar, then to Southeast Asia and China, and finally to Siberia. The story is speculated to be partially based on Moscow embassy secretary Adam Brand's journal detailing the embassy's journey from Moscow to Peking from 1693 to 1695. Serious Reflections of Robinson Crusoe is a collection of essays on spiritual and ethical subjects, written supposedly by Robinson Crusoe in his old years as he contemplates on the story of his life. Though sometimes noticeably dreary, it is quite interesting at some points, as it reveals some Defoe's ideas about morality and religion. Daniel Defoe (1660-1731), was an English writer, journalist, and spy, most famous for his novel Robinson Crusoe. Defoe is noted for being one of the earliest proponents of the novel, and he is considered one of the founders of the English novel.

Excerpt: ...pleased myself with the design, without determining whether I was ever able to undertake it; not but that the difficulty of launching my boat came often into my head; but I put a stop to my own inquiries into it by this foolish answer, which I gave myself; Let me first make it, I will warrant I will find some way or other to get it along, when it is done. This was a most preposterous method; but the eagerness of my fancy prevailed, and to work I went, and felled a cedar tree: I question much whether Solomon ever had such an one for the building the temple of Jerusalem; it was five feet ten inches diameter at the lower part next the stump, and four feet eleven inches diameter at the end of twenty-two feet, after which it lessened for a while, and then parted into branches. It was not without infinite labour that I felled this tree; I was twenty days hacking and hewing at it at the bottom; I was fourteen more getting tlie branches and limbs, and the vast spreading head of it cut off, which I hacked and hewed through with my axe and hatchet, with inexpressible labour; after this it cost me a month to shape it, and dub it to a proportion, and to something like the bottom of a boat, that it might swim upright as it ought to do. It cost me near three months more to clear the inside, and work it out so as to make an exact boat of it: this I did indeed without fire, by mere mallet and chissel, and by the dint of hard labour; till I had brought it to be a very handsome periagua, and big enough to have carried six-andtwenty men, and consequently big enough to have carried me and all my cargo. When I had gone through this work, I was extremely delighted with it: the boat was really much bigger than I ever saw a canoe or periagua, that was made of one tree, ..
