Book excerpt: People take trips into madness and end up in worlds where darkness rules and reason is lost. When you're in the middle of the abyss of chaos, facing your inner demons becomes a desperate attempt to find relief. To sum up: A fascinating journey takes place far away from the sounds and sights of everyday life. People who aren't trained can't see this area, but the heart and mind know it is real. A group of brave teens are about to embark on an exciting trip that will be unlike anything they have ever done before. Their story starts with the discovery of a secret doorway full of history and echoes of the past. This doorway leads to places and regions that have never been seen before, where the fabric of reality bends and weaves in ways that are hard to imagine. These brave people go into a place where impossible things become possible because they want to connect with others and go on adventures. The rules that control our world are suspended here, in these unknown areas, and are replaced by things that don't make sense. Fantasy and magic fill the air, and the changing scenery looks like it was moved by the magic in the area. Fears can come true, and ideas can change the environment. This tests not only the players' physical skills but also their courage, their relationships, and their sanity. They are having more trouble as they go deeper into this strange pit. They are both lessons to be learned and problems to solve. Each is expertly planned to test their resolve, unity, and knowledge of each other and themselves. With every step they take, they encounter mind-bending puzzles, scary creatures, and deceptive images that make them lose touch with reality. This trip needs more than just physical strength. It also needs a strong sense of community, a calm mind, and a strong heart. This trip is more than just an adventure; it's a journey of growth and learning. Through hard times, our heroes learn how important it is to work together to face the unknown. As they travel, they learn that real knowledge is knowing the power that comes from within and from relationships with other people, and real bravery is going into the unknown with a friend. Readers are welcome to go on this exciting trip with the characters and feel wonder, risk, joy, and sadness. This book says it will take you on an exciting trip into the depths of your mind, where magic and craziness meet. Only the brave and strong will make it through the chaos and come back changed by the amazing things that happened. Chapter 1: The Mysterious Chart In the small town of Greenwood, where everyone knew each other and adventures seemed like something out of a story, four friends found out a truth that would change their lives forever. They met in the town's old library on a quiet afternoon. The library smelled like old books and talked about a million stories that were just waiting to be found. They looked through the dusty shelves with the joy that only real friends can feel and found a book that looked like it had not been touched in a very long time. Old pages and a worn-out cover caught their eye, but it was a strange map that had fallen out from between the covers that caught their attention, not the story inside. This map wasn't like other maps. Because it was made with such care and attention to detail, it almost looked like magic. The friends looked at each other with wide, excited, and slightly scared eyes as they studied the map. It showed a winding path that went through forests, over mountains, and across rivers, ending at an intriguing place called "The Unknown." What was "The Unknown"? What's the point of hiding a map in this old book? The questions came out like a flood of uncontrollable interest. Even though or maybe because they weren't sure what to do, they decided right away to follow the plan. They knew it would take them to uncharted territory and give them problems they hadn't planned for, but the fun of the trip and their close friendship made them forget about their fears. They planned, put together things, and daydreamed about the amazing things they might see all night. Would a prize be found? Is there a chance? It looked like there were a lot of options. The next morning, they got up early and took off with the map in their hands. They were both scared and excited. They went beyond Greenwood's well-known streets, where the air was filled with the sounds of nature and the promise of new adventures. They moved farther away from home and closer to their dream trip with each step. They had no idea how tough, together, and self-aware the journey ahead would make them have to be. For now, though, they were in a good mood, and the road ahead called them to do something amazing, which would lead them to the secrets of "the unknown." Chapter 2: The Road No One Has Found A long-kept secret was tucked away at the very end of Greenwood, a quiet hamlet, where the houses went into the woods. At the start of this riddle, on a road that could only be reached by moonlight, four friends who were interested in exploring and liked to take risks were alone. The road wasn't like any other. That one seemed to take them to a different world and whisper hidden secrets and wonders. The familiar parts of their town disappeared as they turned onto the path. In front of them was a thick, rustling forest. As they went on their way, the forest around them seemed to come to life. Old, tall trees look like they're telling stories from the past. It felt like the air itself had changed, become thicker, and was filled with a soft but steady murmur that seemed to be saying, "Turn back, turn back." The whispers didn't scare them, though; they called them to something deeper, something unknown, and very attractive. Each step they took them out of the world they knew and into a world they had only seen in their dreams.

Absolutely inspired, timely, and important.” —Alistair Humphreys, National Geographic Adventurer of the Year and author of The Doorstep Mile and Around the World by Bike Outdoor educator and field researcher Sara Dykman made history when she became the first person to bicycle alongside monarch butterflies on their storied annual migration—a round-trip adventure that included three countries and more than 10,000 miles. Equally remarkable, she did it solo, on a bike cobbled together from used parts. Her panniers were recycled buckets. In Bicycling with Butterflies, Dykman recounts her incredible journey and the dramatic ups and downs of the nearly nine-month odyssey. We’re beside her as she navigates unmapped roads in foreign countries, checks roadside milkweed for monarch eggs, and shares her passion with eager schoolchildren, skeptical bar patrons, and unimpressed border officials. We also meet some of the ardent monarch stewards who supported her efforts, from citizen scientists and researchers to farmers and high-rise city dwellers. With both humor and humility, Dykman offers a compelling story, confirming the urgency of saving the threatened monarch migration—and the other threatened systems of nature that affect the survival of us all.

Book excerpt: In Beyond Civilization, Daniel Quinn thinks the unthinkable. We all know there's no one right way to build a bicycle, no one right way to design an automobile, no one right way to make a pair of shoes, but we're convinced that there must be only one right way to live -- and the one we have is it, no matter what. Beyond Civilization makes practical sense of the vision of Daniel Quinn's best-selling novel Ishmael. Examining ancient civilizations such as the Maya and the Olmec, as well as modern-day microcosms of alternative living like circus societies, Quinn guides us on a quest for a new model for society, one that is forward-thinking and encourages diversity instead of suppressing it. Beyond Civilization is not about a "New World Order" but a "New Personal World Order" that would allow people to assert control over their own destiny and grant them the freedom to create their own way of life right now -- not in some distant utopian future.

Book excerpt: In the tradition of A Civil Action—this true story of a North Carolina outdoorsman who teams up with his Appalachian neighbors to save treasured land from being destroyed will “make you want to head for the mountains” (Raleigh News & Observer). LIVING ALONE IN HIS WOODED MOUNTAIN RETREAT, Jay Leutze gets a call from a whip-smart fourteen-year-old, Ashley Cook, and her aunt, Ollie Cox, who say a local mining company is intent on tearing down Belview Mountain, the towering peak above their house. Ashley and her family, who live in a little spot known locally as Dog Town, are “mountain people,” with a way of life and speech unique to their home high in the Appalachians. They suspect the mining company is violating North Carolina’s mining law, and they want Jay, a nonpracticing attorney, to stop the destruction of the mountain. Jay, a devoted naturalist and fisherman, quickly decides to join their cause. So begins the epic quest of “the Dog Town Bunch,” a battle that involves fiery public hearings, clandestine surveillance of the mine operator’s highly questionable activities, ferocious pressure on public officials, and high-stakes legal brinksmanship in the North Carolina court system. Jay helps assemble a talented group of environmental lawyers to contend with the well-funded attorneys protecting the mining company’s plan to dynamite Belview Mountain, which happens to sit next to the famous Appalachian Trail, the 2,184- mile national park that stretches from Maine to Georgia. As the mining company continues to level the forest and erect the gigantic crushing plant on the site, Jay’s group searches frantically for a way to stop an act of environmental desecration that will destroy a fragile wild place and mar the Appalachian Trail forever.

Book excerpt: Essays on small art films and big-budget blockbusters, including Antonia's Line, American Beauty, Schindler's List, and The Passion of the Christ, that view films as life lessons, enlarging our sense of human possibilities. For Alan Stone, a one-time Freudian analyst and former president of the American Psychiatric Society, movies are the great modern, democratic medium for exploring our individual and collective lives. They provide occasions for reflecting on what he calls “the moral adventure of life”: the choices people make—beyond the limits of their character and circumstances—in response to life's challenges. The quality of these choices is, for him, the measure of a life well lived. In this collection of his film essays, Stone reads films as life texts. He is engaged more by their ideas than their visual presentation, more by their power to move us than by their commercial success. Stone writes about both art films and big-budget Hollywood blockbusters. And he commands an extraordinary range of historical, literary, cultural, and scientific reference that reflects his impressive personal history: professor of law and medicine, football player at Harvard in the late 1940s, director of medical training at McLean Hospital, and advisor to Attorney General Janet Reno on behavioral science. In the end, Stone's enthusiasms run particularly to films that embrace the sheer complexity of life, and in doing so enlarge our sense of human possibilities: in Antonia's Line, he sees an emotionally vivid picture of a world beyond patriarchy; in Thirteen Conversations about One Thing, the power of sheer contingency in human life; and in American Beauty, how beauty in ordinary experience draws us outside ourselves, and how beauty and justice are distinct goods, with no intrinsic connection. Other films discussed in these essays (written between 1993 and 2006 for Boston Review) include Un Coeur en Hiver, Schindler's List, Pulp Fiction, Thirteen Days, the 1997 version of Lolita, The Battle of Algiers, The Passion of the Christ, Persuasion, and Water.

Book excerpt: This collection of essays, drawn from the latest generation of Whitehead scholars, explores how, in the deconstruction of certain concepts, an unceasing invitation of possibility and change is released, both in relation to ongoing philosophical conversations, and as applied to lived experience. The essays make a significant intervention in the field of Whiteheadian scholarship by creating new intersections and paths that extend Whitehead’s thought in novel, and often unexpected, directions. The philosophy of Alfred North Whitehead proposes a radical reconceptualization of experience – one in which we, and all other things, are composed of mutually implicated series of events in an infinite universe of interaction, generating and regenerating experience. Far from indicating a new superlative of holistic integrity, Whitehead prefers the always incomplete movement of all realities, which is the source of vitality for every new generation. This volume applies Whitehead’s philosophy to superlatives – those valued concepts that limit and define our categories amid the flux of experience. The first half of this book probes the superlatives that have historically defined philosophical method in the West. These essays trace the adventures of concepts like substance, novelty, system, and truth. Ossified oppositions that define these superlatives are fractured, indicating new directions for growth. The essays in the second half of the book reflect on the influx, fragility, and impossibility of superlatives like care, tragedy, love, and loss in human experience, generating new matters of philosophical discourse. Superlatives abound. But Whitehead cautions us to attend to their multiplicity. The mutual immanence of events constantly generates new constellations of importance, and so superlatives, because they are contingent upon unstable modes of togetherness, cannot be taken for granted. Any of these concepts may have a particular significance today, but as events coalesce into new constellations, those ideals will continue to take on new meaning.
