This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 730 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Acts and Ordinances of the Legislative Council of the Straits Settlements, Vol. 2 of 2: From the 1st April 1867 to the 1st June 1886; Together With Certain Acts of Parliament, Orders of Her Majesty in Council, Letters Patent, and Indian Acts in Force in the Colony of the Straits Settlements In some instances marginal notes have been added, in others they have been amplified or corrected. Obvious misprints have been corrected, but all corrections, being without authority, have been separated from the text by being placed in square brackets, and the original word, where the misprint does not consist of the omission of a word, appears below in a foot note. The date in square brackets below the title of each Act and Ordinance is, unless it is otherwise stated, the date of the coming into operation, not necessarily of the passing, of such Act or Ordinance. Indexes are provided to some of the longer Acts and Ordinances. Some foot notes have been added. These are, of course, not authoritative. In a few cases, where the foot note forms part of the original Ordinance, the fact is specified. I have to thank the Hon. J. W. Bonser, Mr. F. A. Swettenham, C.M.G., and Mr. J. B. Elcum, of the Straits Civil Service, for assistance in the course of the preparation of this edition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Scrupulous, Thorough, Fearless — The CPIB Story chronicles the journey of the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) from its beginnings to the present. The narrative contained within the pages of this book contextualises the role of the Bureau in Singapore's nation-building journey. The creation of the Bureau and its history and heritage are closely intertwined with the birth and history of Singapore. It starts by providing an account of how corruption had become so prevalent in pre-war Singapore. The experiences of war, characterised by extreme shortages, hunger and privation, provided further impetus for many to resort to corrupt ways to get what they needed and coveted in the post-war period. This Bureau was established to clean up the corruption of the day, an endeavour which contributed to the birth of a strong nation whose people shared a common ethos of integrity. Singapore's reputation for being corruption-free has since been one of the pillars of the nation's economic success.

Law and Legal Institutions of Asia is the first book to offer a comprehensive assessment of eleven key jurisdictions in Asia - China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei Darussalam, Singapore and the Philippines. Written by academics and practitioners with particular expertise in their state or territory, each chapter uses a breakthrough approach, facilitating cross-jurisdictional comparisons and giving essential insights into how law functions in different ways across the region and in each of the individual jurisdictions.

Book Synopsis The Political Life of Urban Streetscapes by : Reuben Rose-Redwood
Download or read book The Political Life of Urban Streetscapes written by Reuben Rose-Redwood and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-06 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Streetscapes are part of the taken-for-granted spaces of everyday urban life, yet they are also contested arenas in which struggles over identity, memory, and place shape the social production of urban space. This book examines the role that street naming has played in the political life of urban streetscapes in both historical and contemporary cities. The renaming of streets and remaking of urban commemorative landscapes have long been key strategies that different political regimes have employed to legitimize spatial assertions of sovereign authority, ideological hegemony, and symbolic power. Over the past few decades, a rich body of critical scholarship has explored the politics of urban toponymy, and the present collection brings together the works of geographers, anthropologists, historians, linguists, planners, and political scientists to examine the power of street naming as an urban place-making practice. Covering a wide range of case studies from cities in Europe, North America, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Asia, the contributions to this volume illustrate how the naming of streets has been instrumental to the reshaping of urban spatial imaginaries and the cultural politics of place.
