Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Abbe Prevost and English Literature Prevost's spelling and punctuation have. Not been modem ized. In certain cases, citations have been given in full which to some readers may seem unduly long. The Pour et Contre is not, however, readily accessible, and it seemed, on the whole, wise to give the more important passages in Prevost's own words rather than to leave the reader to trust to my own resumes of the author's thought. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With The Greek Girl’s Story, Alan Singerman presents the first reliable, stand-alone translation and critical edition of Abbé Prévost’s 1740 literary masterpiece Histoire d’une Grecque moderne. The text of this new English translation is based on Singerman’s 1990 French edition, which Jonathan Walsh called “arguably the most valuable critical edition” of Prévost’s novel to date. This new edition also includes a complete critical apparatus comprising a substantial introduction, notes, appendixes, and bibliography, all significantly updated from the 1990 French edition, taking into account recent scholarship on this work and providing some additional reflection on the question of Orientalism. Prévost’s roman à clef is based on a true story involving the French ambassador to the Ottoman Porte from 1699 to 1711. It is narrated from the ambassador’s viewpoint and is a model of subjective, unreliable narration (long before Henry James). It is remarkably modern in its presentation of an enigmatic, ambiguous character, as the truth about the heroine can never be established with certainty. It is the story of the tormented relationship between the diplomat and a beautiful young Greek concubine, Théophé, whom he frees from a pasha’s harem. While her benefactor becomes increasingly infatuated with her and bent on becoming her lover, the Greek girl becomes obsessed with the idea of becoming a virtuous and respected woman. Viewing the ambassador as a father figure, she condemns his quasi-incestuous passion and firmly rejects his repeated seduction attempts. Unable to possess the young woman or tolerate the thought that she might grant to someone else what she has refused him, the narrator subjects her behavior to minute scrutiny in an effort to catch her in an indiscretion. His investigations are fruitless, however, and Théophé, the victim of incessant persecution, simply dies, leaving all the questions about her behavior unanswered.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Young Fawcett's Mabel The first reason is this: One hesitates to send a favorite child, in whose merit he believes, before an audience sure to be critical. Thou Shalt Not lay in my desk four years before any publisher saw it. Young Fawcett's Mabel has been there nearly as long, on account of a fear that my successes have not taught me to outlive. This is the second reason There are certain public questions in the air, as the saying is, and novelists are unconsciously following in similar paths. For instance Out of Wedlock had a plot that was, till its appearance, unique in literature; but within a month an eminent English author published a novel with the same motif; and a month later another author did the same thing. I do not consider it safe to leave Mabel out of print, lest the day come when I cannot send it forth without being accused of plagiarism. Book excerpt: This novel reverses the Abbe Prevost's Manon Lescaut and gives Manon's helplessly amoral character to a man, Leoni. Juliette, the girl he seduces, becomes the exponent of undying, endless, forgiving love. The setting is the demimonde of Venice, and the is thick with sinister figures whose influence drags the miserable lovers down.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book 'History of English Literature from "Beowulf" to Swinburne' is written by Andrew Lang. Lang was a Scottish writer and literary critic who is best known as a collector of folk and fairy tales. His academic interests extended beyond the literary and he was a noted contributor to the fields of anthropology, folklore, psychical research, history, and classic scholarship, as well as the inspiration for the University of St. Andrew's lectures. A prolific author, Lang published more than 100 works during his career, including twelve fairy books, in which he compiled folk and fairy tales from around the world. Excerpt: "The literature of every modern country is made up of many elements, contributed by various races; and has been modified at different times by foreign influences. Thus, among the ancient Celtic inhabitants of our islands, the peoples whom the Romans found here, the Welsh have given us the materials of the famous romances of King Arthur, and from the Gaelic tribes of Ireland and Scotland come the romances of heroes less universally known, Finn, Diarmaid, Cuchulain, and the rest. But the main stock of our earliest poetry and prose, like the main stock of our language, is Anglo-Saxon. The Anglo-Saxon tribes who invaded Britain, and after the departure of the Romans (411) conquered the greater part of the island, must have had a literature of their own, and must have brought it with them over sea."
