By now, Julia knew better than to trust any man, even when that man was the overwhelmingly attractive Lord Nicholas Daventry, Robin’s own uncle. Book Synopsis Marriage, Divorce, and the Abandoned Wife in Jewish Law by : Michael J. Broyde
Download or read book Marriage, Divorce, and the Abandoned Wife in Jewish Law written by Michael J. Broyde and published by KTAV Publishing House, Inc.. This book was released on 2001 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most vexing problems to confront American Orthodox Jewry is where a wife is abandoned by her husband who refuses to give her a Jewish divorce. This work seeks to explain the agunah problem in the United States. It notes that the contemporary agunah problem in America is radically different than that of contemporary Israel and completely different than the talmudic agunah problem. The thesis of this book is that the agunah problem in contemporary America is part of a more general dispute in classical Jewish law as to when marriage should end. Thus, this book surveys how Jewish law seeks to respond to the consent of the other party or without a finding of fault. It concludes by noting that prenuptial agreements can successfully address the agunah problem in the United States since they provide a way for couples to create an image of marriage and divorce by which they can agree to live. Michael J. Broyde is an Associate Professor of Law at Emory University and the Academic Director of Law and Religion Program at Emory University. He is a member (dayan) in the Beth Din of America and was the director of that Beth Din while on sabbatical from Emory. In addition, he is the founding rabbi of the Young Israel synagogue in Atlanta. Professor Broyde is the author of The Pursuit of Justice in Jewish Law and co-author of Human Rights in Judaism.--Amazon.com.

Book excerpt: An Israeli professor and an Arab student join forces in a witty novel that “tells a simple story about a region that complicates all it touches” (The New Yorker). Yochanan Rivlin, a professor at Haifa University, is a man of boundless and often naïve curiosity. His wife, Hagit, a district judge, is tolerant of almost everything but her husband’s faults and prevarications. Frequent arguments aside, they are a well-adjusted couple with two grown sons. When one of Rivlin’s students—a young Arab bride from a village in the Galilee—is assigned to help with his research in recent Algerian history, a two-pronged mystery develops. As they probe the causes of the bloody Algerian civil war, Rivlin also becomes obsessed with his son’s failed marriage. Rivlin’s search leads to a number of improbable escapades. In this comedy of manners, at once deeply serious and highly entertaining, Yehoshua brilliantly portrays characters from disparate sectors of Israeli life, united above all by a very human desire for, and fear of, the truth in politics and life.

Katherine Clark’s The Harvard Bride begins with the wedding of Daniel Dobbs and Caroline Elmore, college sweethearts introduced in Clark’s novel, All the Governor’s Men. In this wry comedy of manners, their new life—complete with freshly minted Ivy League educations—begins in the “Tiny Kingdom” of Mountain Brook, Alabama. Unwilling to join the Junior League, look for a house, contemplate motherhood, or even finish her thank-you notes, Caroline can’t seem to find her bearings—or even fulfill her calling as a writer. Meanwhile, Daniel’s law career is going so well she hardly sees him. The most exciting aspect of her life is her handsome next-door neighbor, who also happens to be a writer. The reappearance of an old school friend, a southern belle bombshell in hot pursuit of all eligible bachelors and potential real estate clients, only adds to Caroline’s problems. When she accepts a surprise job offer at the University of Alabama, she begins to put together an identity of her own—until it falls inexplicably apart. Also featuring the return of larger-than-life Brook-Haven headmaster Norman Laney, The Harvard Bride is at once a social satire and a richly nuanced love story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A young bride shuts herself up in a bedroom on her wedding day, refusing to get married. In this moving and humorous look at contemporary Israel and the chaotic ups and downs of love everywhere, her family gathers outside the locked door, not knowing what to do. The bride's mother has lost a younger daughter in unclear circumstances. Her grandmother is hard of hearing, yet seems to understand her better than anyone. A male cousin who likes to wear women’s clothes and jewelry clings to his grandmother like a little boy. The family tries an array of unusual tactics to ensure the wedding goes ahead, including calling in a psychologist specializing in brides who change their mind and a ladder truck from the Palestinian Authority electrical company. The only communication they receive from behind the door are scribbled notes, one of them a cryptic poem about a prodigal daughter returning home. The harder they try to reach the defiant woman, the more the despairing groom is convinced that her refusal should be respected. But what, exactly, ought to be respected? Is this merely a case of cold feet? A feminist statement? Or a mourning ritual for a lost sister? This provocative and highly entertaining novel lingers long after its final page.
