Book excerpt: In 1977 and 1978, Bechtel Power Corporation performed conceptual design studies of one 50-MW geothermal power plant for the Public Service Company of New Mexico, an electric utility company in New Mexico. The conceptual design studies were to compare various turbine heat cycles for the utilization of geothermal source from the liquid-dominated hydrothermal field at Valles Caldera ("Valley of the Boiler") in the Jemez Mountains, 80 miles north of Albuquerque and 19 miles west of Los Alamos in New Mexico. These conceptual designs compared single and double steam processes. In 1979, upon the completion of the conceptual design studies, Bechtel Power Corporation was awarded a contract by the Public Service Company of New Mexico for engineering, procurement, and construction managament sevices for the 50-MW geothermal power plant project identified as the Baca Geothermal Power Plant located at the site known as Baca Ranch. This project is cofunded under the U.S. Department of Energy demonstration plant program and is the first commercial-size geothermal power plant in the U.S. using a liquid-dominated hydrothermal source. In addition, in view of its low salinity, about 6000 ppm, this hydrothermal source is looked upon by the U.S. energy sector as another major geothermal-electric energy source comparable to the Geyser vapor-thermal field in Northern California.

Book excerpt: The various activities that have been conducted by Union in the Redondo Creek area while attempting to develop the resource for a 50 MW power plant are described. The results of the geologic work, drilling activities and reservoir studies are summarized. In addition, sections discussing the historical costs for Union's involvement with the project, production engineering (for anticipated surface equipment), and environmental work are included. Nineteen geothermal wells have been drilled in the Redondo Creek area of the Valles Caldera: a prominent geologic feature of the Jemez mountains consisting of Pliocene and Pleistocene age volcanics. The Redondo Creek area is within a complex longitudinal graben on the northwest flank of the resurgent structural dome of Redondo Peak and Redondo Border. The major graben faults, with associated fracturing, are geologically plausible candidates for permeable and productive zones in the reservoir. The distribution of such permeable zones is too erratic and the locations too imprecisely known to offer an attractive drilling target. Log analysis indicates there is a preferred mean fracture strike of N31W in the upper portion of Redondo Creek wells. This is approximately perpendicular to the major structure in the area, the northeast-striking Redondo Creek graben. The geothermal fluid found in the Redondo Creek reservoir is relatively benign with low brine concentrations and moderate H2S concentrations. Geothermometer calculations indicate that the reservoir temperature generally lies between 500°F and 600°F, with near wellbore flashing occurring during the majority of the wells' production.

Book excerpt: A 50 MW geothermal power plant is currently under development at the Baca site in the Valles Caldera, New Mexico, as a joint venture of the Department of Energy (DOE), Union Oil Company of California, and the Public Service Company of New Mexico (PNM). To date, over 20 wells have been drilled on the prospect, and the data from these wells indicate the presence of a high-temperature liquid dominated reservoir. Data from open literature on the field are used to estimate the amount of hot water in place (reservoir capacity) and the length of time the reservoir can supply steam for a 50 MW power plant (reservoir longevity). The reservoir capacity is estimated by volumetric calculations using existing geological, geophysical, and well data. The criteria used are described and the sensitivity of the results discussed. The longevity of the field is studied using a two-phase numerical simulator (SHAFT79). A number of cases are studied based upon different boundary conditions, and injection and production criteria. Constant or variable mass production is employed in the simulations with closed, semi-infinite or infinite reservoir boundaries. In one of the cases, a fault zone feeding the production region is modeled. The injection strategy depends on the available waste water. The results of these simulations are discussed and the sensitivity of the results, with respect to mesh size and the relative permeability curves used, are briefly studied.
