Book excerpt: Excerpt from The 1930 Agricultural Outlook for California According to the Federal Outlook Report the apple industry of the United States has made a considerable recovery from the disturbed conditions which accompanied the rapid and excessive expansion of commercial plantings in the Northwest and other sections about 20 years ago. The drastic adjustments which followed this period of over-planting have gradually placed the industry on a sounder economic basis. There are still sufficient young trees in commercial orchards, however, to maintain production at a high level for a period of years, and in seasons when weather and other growing conditions are especially favorable production will be so heavy as to be burden some. In 33 of the states which produce over 90 per cent of the United States apple crop, 25 to 30 per cent of the trees in commercial orchards were less than 9 years old at the beginning of 1928, and 65 to 70 per cent were less than 19 years old. In View of this proportion of young trees in commercial orchards together with the general tendencies toward an increased bearing life and an increased productive capacity per tree, owing to improved orchard manage ment and to the larger proportion of orchards on better locations. It seems reasonable to expect a further increase in commercial produc tion for several years. This prospective increase in commercial pro duction, however, will be partially offset by the declining production in family orchards, which contain nearly one-third of the apple trees in the United States. Reduction in costs, improvement in quality, and efficiency in marketing are all important considerations. Even in a time of declining prices, some farmers located on land particularly suited to one crop may make more money by growing that crop than by planting another which is on a rising price level but to which the land, climate, or market facilities are ill adapted. Farmers need to consider both the probable future prices as discussed in this circular, and the costs of production on their own farm, or at least in their own locality. Recent cost of production studies, made in cooperation with the farm advisors' offices in various counties, are presented in Agri cultural Extension Circular 24. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The 1934 Agricultural Outlook for California: Contribution From the Giannini Foundation of Agricultural Economics Although there was a net decrease of 46 per cent in the total number of apple trees in the United States between 1910 and 1930, only a moderate decline in production occurred. During the past five years, total produc tion averaged only 11 per cent below the 1909 - 1913 level and only 24 per cent below the peak period of production, 1914 - 1918. The smaller decline in production, as compared with tree numbers, is due primarily to the shift that has taken place from farm to commercial orchards with better locations, and to the increasing bearing capacity of many trees as they have approached or reached full-bearing age. During the past twenty years, production of apples in the 11 Pacific Coast and mountain states increased about 195 per cent. At the same time the number of bearing trees increased 10 per cent, and yield per bearing tree increased from an average of bushels to about bushels. In these western states production now is apparently close to its peak for the present cycle. In the Pacific Coast states as a group, only a very small percentage of the trees is yet to come into bearing, but pro duction as a whole is being fairly well maintained by tree resets and by an increase in producing capacity of trees due to an advance in their age. Plantings in the western apple states have been very light in recent years. Commercial orchards in the better districts are generally well cared for, but in the poorer fruit districts neglect has been noticeable. Low prices of apples in eastern markets during the past three years have been reflected by sharp declines in returns to western growers, since transportation charges, which have remained almost constant, have absorbed an increasing proportion of the prices paid by consumers. This has made it difficult for western growers to compete successfully with producers near the large consuming centers.
