Book excerpt: Sam Bonham—bad husband, deadbeat dad, and possible criminal on the run from the law—wanders out of modern-day East Texas into an ersatz Wild West boomtown created for a movie that never happened. And when Sam strikes a blow against the gangsters who’ve been terrorizing the town, the locals look to him to save them. He’s no hero, but he’s stumbled upon someone who is: John Wayne. But the John Wayne of this story is not the stalwart lawman of Hollywood films—he’s a seventy-two-year-old man who had himself cryogenically frozen. He’s weak, bald, frail…and unrecognizable to everyone but Sam. In The Duke’s “defrosted” state, he’s not entirely himself. In fact, he believes he’s actually Ethan Edwards, the character he played in The Searchers, one of Wayne’s most beloved films. Ethan or Duke or Marion Morrison, at his side Sam learns how to be a man, and a hero—and a pretty good shot! As he takes on the Old West gang of thugs, he finds that he might have become a family man at last. But back in the real world, someone has his eye on Sam’s wife, and if Sam doesn’t get back soon, the results could be devastating.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The disappearance of a Reno couple from Prince William Sound, Alaska, along with a half eaten dog, apparently by killer whales, raises suspicion that a certain orca pack, called the A-T pack, led by a particularly sharp and aggressive female, the queen, may be responsible. An exploration geologist and his wife, Alaska residents and both interested in orcas, carry out investigations in the A-T pack's home waters to learn more about their behavior and habits. They are joined by a marine biologist orca specialist from southern California. A number of people are determined to communicate with the orcas, including a psychologist from Canada, a rock band from Vancouver, BC. and music for the orcas via underwater speakers. Some kids from Anchorage attempt to communicate with the whales with near-fatal consequences. Accompany the intelligent orcas as they hunt, kill and eat various types of fish and animals. They also have fun. The three investigators decide to test the interest of the orcas, under federal and state supervision, in a totally strange food to help determine if they might kill and eat humans. Small pigs, a human food, were decided upon as the best choice for testing orca reaction to strange food animals. The test is successful and part of the A-T pack is orca led but not for long.
Download or read book Only Smiths written by David James Smith and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-07-08 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How a Smith aided William Wallace win at Stirling Bridge, in Norman dominated Scotland. James Smith wanted to find his own way in life. Born in Badenoch, southwest Highland Scotland, he was determined to help William Wallace fight against Norman dominance for independence. Smiths were victims of a Moray clearance when Oengus, or Angus Chief of the Chattan and last Mormaor or King of Moray, had fallen at Stracathro to be replaced by a Norman Earl. James, a 3rd generation blacksmith, crossed the Causey Mounth cattle drover road to emerge at Fetteresso, before Durris on the east coast armed with a self-made sword, targe, adaptable skills, and handed down family history shaped by war. His skills served another Earl Moray who declared for Wallace burning out Normans from Dunnottar castle still smoking as they went south for Dundee and Stirling Bridge. This decision shaped the destiny of east-coast Smiths, now told.

Download or read book Leadership in Disaster written by Raymond Murphy and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2009-04-01 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Murphy explores whether technological development inadvertently constructed new vulnerabilities, thereby manufacturing a natural disaster. As the extreme weather in the ice storm may foreshadow what will occur with global warming, Leadership in Disaster also explores the politics, economics, ethics, and cultural predispositions involved in climate change, investigating how modern societies create both the risks they assume are acceptable and the burden of managing them. An innovative comparison with Amish communities, where the same extreme weather had trivial consequences, is instructive for avoiding future socio-economic catastrophes.

Book Synopsis The Diary of Lena Mukhina by : Lena Mukhina
Download or read book The Diary of Lena Mukhina written by Lena Mukhina and published by Pan Macmillan. This book was released on 2015-02-12 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In May 1941 Lena Mukhina was an ordinary teenage girl, living in Leningrad, worrying about her homework and whether Vova - the boy she liked - liked her. Like a good Soviet schoolgirl, she was also diligently learning German, the language of Russia's Nazi ally. And she was keeping a diary, in which she recorded her hopes and dreams. Then, on 22 June 1941, Hitler broke his pact with Stalin and declared war on the Soviet Union. All too soon, Leningrad was besieged and life became a living hell. Lena and her family fought to stay alive; their city was starving and its citizens were dying in their hundreds of thousands. From day to dreadful day, Lena records her experiences: the desperate hunt for food, the bitter cold of the Russian winter and the cruel deaths of those she loved. A truly remarkable account of this most terrible era in modern history, The Diary of Lena Mukhina is the vivid first-hand testimony of a courageous young woman struggling simply to survive.
