Book excerpt: This instructor's guide assists secondary social studies educators in making effective use of the five-part video series, "That Delicate Balance II: Our Bill of Rights." In the tradition of "The Constitution: That Delicate Balance," the series introduces students to the Bill of Rights and the controversies that have arisen over these rights. Led by moderators using the Socratic method of inquiry, the series features panels of experts engaging in lively debate about the constitutional, ethical, and social issues arising from a number of hypothetical scenarios. The programs enrich secondary civics, government, and history courses that examine the Constitution, Bill of Rights, civil liberties, or contemporary issues. The instructor's guide opens with a summary of the topics of the five units in the series. The unit topics are Roe v. Wade; the First Amendment and hate speech; a rape trial; equality and the individual; and criminal justice, from murder to execution. A section on each unit provides teachers with an overview of the issue presented, background materials that teachers may copy and distribute to their class, and discussion questions based on these materials that students can debate prior to viewing the video. Each section likewise presents discussion questions for the class to debate following the video as well as suggestions for further research, reports, and essays. At the back of the guide, teachers are provided with a convenient list of teaching resources related to the Bill of Rights. (JD)

Book excerpt: Visitors cause trouble for a pair of suburbanites in this Pulitzer Prize–winning play by the author of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?. Wealthy middle-aged couple Agnes and Tobias have their complacency shattered when their longtime friends Harry and Edna appear at their doorstep. Claiming an encroaching, nameless “fear” has forced them from their own home, these neighbors bring a firestorm of doubt, recrimination and ultimately solace, upsetting the “delicate balance” of Agnes and Tobias’s household . . . In recent years, A Delicate Balance has enjoyed many and new stunning revivals, running now, including a Broadway production in 1996, which won the Tony Award for Best Revival, and another at the Alameida Theatre in London in 2011. “Theatrical fireworks.” —The New York Times

Book excerpt: Few aspects of revenue law generate stronger feelings than the exercise of discretionary power by tax administrations. A delicate balance often needs to be struck between the legitimate needs of revenue authorities and the equally legitimate interests and rights of taxpayers. On the one hand, the executive and administration need to have sufficient capacity to apply the law; on the other, there is a need to maintain the principle of the rule of law that it is the elected legislature, and not the executive or tax administration, that establishes tax burdens. The chapters in this volume explore that delicate balance. The Delicate Balance - Tax, Discretion and the Rule of Law considers the critical questions that arise from the intersections of tax, discretion and the rule of law in modern common and civil law jurisdictions: What do we mean by tax discretion and how does it vary in conceptual and practical terms in different tax regimes? -What role should discretion play in tax systems that operate under the rule of law and how large should that role be? -What are the legal, political, institutional and other constraints that can prevent abuse of discretion? -To what extent can, and should, the legislature safely delegate discretionary powers to tax administrations?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainability of the natural environment and of our society has become one of the most urgent challenges facing modern Americans. Communities across the country are seeking a viable pattern of growth that promotes prosperity, protects the environment, and preserves the distinctive quality of life of their regions. The coastal zone of South Carolina is one of the most endangered, culturally complex regions in the state and perhaps in all of the American South. A Delicate Balance examines how a multilayered culture of environmental conservation and sustainable development has emerged in the lowcountry of South Carolina. Angela C. Halfacre, a political scientist, describes how sprawl shock, natural disaster, climate change, and other factors spawned and sustain—but also threaten and hinder—the culture of conservation. Since Hurricane Hugo in 1989, the coastal region of South Carolina has experienced unprecedented increases in residential and commercial development. A Delicate Balance uses interdisciplinary literature and ethnographic, historical, and spatial methods to show how growing numbers of lowcountry residents, bolstered by substantial political, corporate, and media support, have sought to maintain the region's distinctive sense of place as well as its fragile ecology. The diverse social and cultural threads forming the fabric of the lowcountry conservation culture include those who make their living from the land, such as African American basket makers and multigenerational famers, as well as those who own, manage, and develop the land and homeowner association members. Evolving perceptions, policies, and practices that characterize community priorities and help to achieve the ultimate goal of sustainability are highlighted here. As Halfacre demonstrates, maintaining the quality of the environment while accommodating residential, commercial, and industrial growth is a balancing act replete with compromises. This book documents the origins, goals, programs, leaders, tactics, and effectiveness of a conservation culture. A Delicate Balance deftly illustrates that a resilient culture of conservation that wields growing influence in the lowcountry has become an important regional model for conservation efforts across the nation. A Delicate Balance also includes a foreword by journalist Cynthia Barnett, author of Blue Revolution: Unmaking America's Water Crisis and Mirage: Florida and the Vanishing Water of the Eastern U.S.

Book excerpt: The Collaborative Partnership Approach to Care: A Delicate Balance, 1e, brings together the insights and discoveries by expert clinicians and teachers who use a collaborative approach to care. The primary focus of this book is on the relationships between professionals and the people they care for -- not just between professionals. Based on the "McGill Model of Nursing", the authors stress the value of working in collaboration with the client, family, or community. Written for nursing students of all levels, it also will be of interest to health care and mental health professionals. Uses a variety of formats to present ideas about collaboration. Describes ideas about collaboration from the perspective of expert clinicians who have been using collaboration as their approach to nursing care. Integrates quotes from interviews with expert clinicians to illustrate ideas about collaboration. Uses examples from clinical practice to help the reader understand how these theoretical ideas are translated into practice. Describes ideas used in teaching students about collaboration. Raises questions that can guide further research in this area.

This book was released on 2002-04-29 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is commonly acknowledged that the nervous system and the immune system, those most complex of networks, share attributes beyond their intricacy. Elements common to the two systems include memory, connectivity, flexibility and developmental selection of cellular composition by a rigorous process involving widespread programmed cell death. There is one salient difference: the cells of the immune system are predominantly in constant motion, while post-mitotic neurons and glia are largely fixed in place. Therefore, chemokines, initially characterized as leukocyte chemoattractants, have for the last one and one-half decades been intensely and productively studied in the contexts of inflammation, immunity and hematopoietic development. Only recently have the two fields, neurobiology and immunology, displayed mutual interests in chemokines. This convergence of the two tribes of investigators was catalyzed by the finding that SDF-1 (now known as CXCL12) and its receptor, CXCR4, exerted significant and similar functions in development of both nervous and immune systems. Indeed CXCL12 and CXCR4 were required, in an uncannily similar fashion, for retention of pre-B lymphocytes at sites of maturation in the bone marrow and of neuronal progenitors in the external granule cell layer of the developing cerebellum. Recent reports indicate that chemoattraction of cerebellar granule cells through CXCR4 can be suppressed by reverse signaling initiated by binding of soluble eph receptors to transmembrane ephrin B, thereby establishing a link between chemokine action and a cardinal patterning system of the developing nervous system. As may be anticipated when a dam breaks, a massive influx of correlative observations in the nervous and immune systems is likely to ensue. This volume represents the state of current knowledge. To this end, introductory material for both systems is provided. Basic and advanced 'chemokinology' are presented. The recipe for making a nervous system (both ingredients and instructions for preparation) is described, as are the roles of chemokines and their receptors in making an immune system. Given their importance and complexity, CXCL12/CXCR4 interactions are separately treated in varying contexts. The field of 'neurobiology of chemokines' has not lain fallow during the last ten years. During much of this time the principal focus has been on neuroinflammation. Linking the immune and nervous systems are explanations of the functions of chemokines and their receptors for resident brain macrophages, the microglia, the unique cerebrovascular endothelium and angiogenesis. Understanding human disease is the goal of much of this research. New discoveries are being made and reported at a gratifying rate. It is expected that this volume will promote the steady production and application of useful new knowledge in this developing field. It provides a unique single-source database for basic neurobiology highlighting the fundamental aspects of chemokines and discussing the relations of chemokine science to animal models and human disease.

The thing that we desire the most seems to give the most turmoil. How can it be that God created marriage as the foundational relationship for society and yet it is the most difficult of relationships? How is it that God said, It is not good for man to be alone, yet every time man and woman get together their union brings more smoke than fire? Is it the two becoming one that creates the problem or the choices we make in marriage? God has a wonderful plan for marriage that carefully blooms into a delightful union when you choose Him as your guide. Every woman who desires a marriage made in heaven will appreciate Adriennes honest, open and real approach to the difficult areas of marriage. She shares real life experiences that inspire, encourage and re-affirm the value of womanhood and the beauty of holy matrimony.
