Each stage has contributed to the greatness of its successors, each has added to the complexity of human knowledge, each has made man a little more independent of his environment, each has turned his thoughts a little more keenly inward until race consciousness has become an active factor in the shaping of human destiny. Behind this long record we find a few remnants which tell us of the infancy of the human race. Crude drawings on the walls of caverns and the implements which these primitive peoples used disclose something of their limited culture. Bones associated with these eloquent legacies tell us much of the characteristics of the people who left them. Every thing points to gradual change, but behind these records - what? Man has first of all a heritage, in common with all other organ isms, a thing without which he cannot exist. He lives surrounded by conditions of various kinds which, in the aggregate, we call his environment. Environment is a second essential; to it the heritage responds within the limits of its possibility. The combination means life. We know from our own experience that life can exist without consciousness. We know too that at some time in the ascending complexity of individual development consciousness dawns, and the individual responds to the world about him not merely as a series of reactions to environmental stimuli, but with an awakening realization of other entities about him, and at last a consciousness of self. Where this point lies in the organic world we cannot say with certainty; it may be that man alone is more than an organic automaton. The light of personal experience clarifies its significance. Have we always, as a species, possessed this quality which must develop in each individual? In View of the records just mentioned this seems unlikely. Back of that crude beginning of our record of man's progress there must have been something. Consciousness must have had a beginning. The present writer has now for sixteen successive years presented in lecture form to large classes of students the subjects of evolution, genetics, and eugenics. Never have we been able to find a single book that would cover the required ground. In fact it has been necessary to require, or at least to recommend, as many as three books. It is believed that the present book will furnish adequate reading material for a major or a semester course in evolutionary biology. Some supplementary reading may be necessary in case an instructor wishes to emphasize one or more phases of the subject; but for a first course in the subject we believe that all of the essential reading material will be found within the text itself. An effort has been made to present the subject in the best pedagogical order. After a general introduction, a rather long chapter appears in which the whole history of the development of evolutionary science is outlined, together with the names and contributions of the leading evolutionists. The delay in publication was brought about by a variety of causes. Inasmuch as the purpose of the lectures is to discuss some of the wider problems of biology in the light of knowledge acquired by Mendelian methods of analysis, it was essential that a fairly full account of the conclusions established by them should first be undertaken and I therefore postponed the present work till a book on Mendel's Principles had been completed. On attempting a more general discussion Of the bearing Of the phenomena on the theory of Evolution, I found myself continually hindered by the consciousness that such treatment is premature, and by doubt whether it were not better that the debate should for the present stand indefinitely adjourned. That species have come into existence by an evolutionary process no one seriously doubts; but few who are familiar with the facts that genetic research has revealed are now inclined to speculate as to the manner by which the process has been ac complished. Our knowledge of the nature and properties Of living things is far too meagre to justify any such attempts. Suggestions of course can be made: though, however, these ideas may have a stimulating value in the lecture room, they look weak and thin when set out in print. The work which may one day give them a body has yet to be done. The development of negations is always an ungrateful task apt to be postponed for the positive business of experiment. Such work is happily now going forward in most of the centers of scientific life. Of many of the subjects here treated we already know more than we did in 1907. The con ception of evolution began as a speculation, but became scientific in connection with the work of lamarck and darwin. In such work the method used was that of Observation and inference. Facts were observed and an explanation was devised that would relate them. Resemblances and differences among species were noted, and it was inferred that these indicated degrees of relationship. It was assumed that closely related species must have had a comparatively recent common ancestry and that more distantly related species must have had a more remote common ancestry. Through comparisons of structure and of geographical distribution systems of phylogeny have been inferred, and an outline of the evolution of the plant and animal kingdoms has been the result. All of these conclusions are based upon comparison and inference. This method reached its extreme application in the work of darwin, whose observations included a range of forms and an extent of time unequaled by any pre ceding student oi evolution.
