Thus by heating a serum to 55 C. The haemolytic action is destroyed While the action of the agglutinins is retained. Precipitins. If a rabbit is injected with the serum of horse, chicken or eel, and the serum of this rabbit is later mixed with the serum of a horse, chicken or eel, as the case may be, the latter becomes cloudy by reason of the precipitation of a portion of the albumen. The substances in the rabbit's serum which de termine the precipitation of a portion of the albumins are known as precipitins. Leblanc finds that in the majority of cases the precipitate is made up in part of albumin from the serum operated on, but mainly of pseudo-globulin from the specific serum. The specific serum may operate equally on the serum of two nearly related animals'. Thus the serum taken from the rabbit which had been first injected with chicken serum, precipitates the normal serum of both chicken and pigeon. These two animals are supposed to have common receptors. Without going further in the elucidation of precipitins and their relations, it may be said that in them as in the agglutinins we have to a certain extent a parallelism with the production of antitoxins by the introduction into the living -body of the toxins of a given disease. No method for the utilization of the precipitins for protective purposes has been successfully worked out, yet they have been availed of to differentiate the flesh of one animal from that of another for which it has been sub stituted - the flesh of the horse from that of the ox, or that of the dog from that of the sheep. The author has personally experienced this need as a teacher of veterinary students for over twenty years. The few books available on the subject are either obsolete or so filled with errors that they mislead rather than instruct. Some of the best of them are translations from the German and French. In too many instances the translators have been neither veterinarians nor teachers of veterinary medicine, and too few of them linguists. Furthermore, the books in this field have not been designed for undergraduate students; they are bulky, comprehensive works of reference of little pedagogic value; all of them have been superseded by newer editions in the original tongue. Although this volume is designed primarily for the student, it will be found valuable to the practitioner, investigator or intelligent stockman who may have need of knowledge of the fundamental principles of the practice of veterinary medicine presented in concise, clear-cut and at the same time not too dogmatic form. While the author has many to thank for assistance in preparing this volume, among his fellow teachers, investigators and practitioners, he is especially indebted to Professor D. H. Udall, of the New York State Veterinary College, Cornell University, who kindly read the manuscript and offered many valuable suggestions from his rich experience, practically all of which have been incorporated in the book. He passed away on December 17th, 1902, at Munich, in his sixty-third year, after a painful illness of many years duration. In him Veterinary Science lost its greatest and best-known exponent. In clinical analysis he was, indeed, without a rival! To this must be added his rare devotion to duty as a teacher, his great scientific individuality, his typical love of truth (refined by his severe selfcriticism) in the prosecution of his investigations and in his manner of offering the results to the public; and, lastly, his aversion, due to his lofty character, to any kind of quackery, self-advertisement, and the advancement of merely specious theories. This rare union of so many eminent qualities at once explains how he came to found his own the Munich school of science, which, with its numerous pupils, continues to flourish and to maintain its influence. Not every master, as we all know, is destined to create his school! To that band of pupils of Friedberger belongs the joint author of this work and the editor of this present new edition. It will be of interest to the readers of this text-book and the friends of the deceased master to hear something as to its origin. In 1880 I took over the post of a clinical assistant at the then Veterinary School of Munich, and was brought into the closest relations with the resident professor, Professor Friedberger, whose methods of instruction and investigation appeared to me worthy of the highest admiration owing to his remarkable perspicuity and his strictly scientific methods. When in 1882 I was called to Stuttgart to take up a professorship there, the first suggestion was made of our publishing a scientific text-book on veterinary pathology. In the spring of 1884, when I had to go to Munich to attend Francks funeral, the plan was definitely settled and the preliminary work taken in hand.
