Though distraught, Laura and their two children began life again. Her father Will, an attorney, introduced her to his client Dr. Paul Duff, whom she later married. The doctor was accused of kidnapping his small son. After a series of strange and astonishing events, Laura was thrown into jail and her children were taken from her by her parents. Her life became a nightmare, and she had to find a way to get her children back. What were the secrets that caused these devastating events? Her once-loving parents feared to reveal their shocking past, which led to their destructive actions against their daughter. Would their daughter discover their reasons and could she ever forgive them? Books can be ordered through Trafford and most of the large book stores, including Borders and Barnes and Noble.

Book excerpt: Roger and Penny Scaggs seemed a poster couple for family values. Evangelical Christians living in booming Austin, Texas, in the mid-1990s, they were respected leaders in their church and community. As Roger diligently worked his way up the high-tech corporate ladder, Penny kept a pristine home and coached similarly devout young women on how to be perfect wives. But on a windy March evening, this godly woman met the devil head-on. And when the police discovered her lifeless body—repeatedly bludgeoned with a lead pipe, then mutilated with a knife from her own spotless kitchen—they were shocked by the rage and savagery behind her slaying. The Good Wife is a startling true story of greed, hatred, betrayal, and an unimaginable murder—a tale of the dark decay that can be hidden behind a facade of saintliness when a marriage seemingly made in heaven descends into hell.

Book Synopsis History of Texas by : John Henry Brown
Download or read book History of Texas written by John Henry Brown and published by . This book was released on 1893 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a 19th century history of Texas, focusing on its Spanish and Mexican past, as well as the war for independence. From the preface: "The field for historical research in Texas, covering two centuries of time, is wide and, for the most part, deeply interesting. To the present and future generations, however, its chief historic value is confined to that period of time beginning about the close of the 18th and the commencement of the 19th century. Anterior to that time, outside of feeble settlements at San Antonio, Goliad and Nacogdoches and a few straggling missions, the country remained a primeval wilderness. Nor did any real progress toward reclamation occur until an effort was made to secure an Anglo-Saxon (chiefly North American) population, the first fruits of which became manifest in a few families and single men from January to December, 1822. From the latter year we trace all of Texas identified with those principles of liberty, and representative constitutional government held, at least by all English speaking people, to be essential to the continued progress and happiness of mankind. This work is undertaken with a sincere desire to give truth absolute control; to eschew every prejudice; to do justice to all who served their country with fidelity; and to guard against the great injustice of withholding merit due to some and awarding merit not due to others. Most of the numerous books on Texas, including several published in, or prior to 1836, were too early to reach much of its most important history, and before many facts touching the then past were known, or when they were but partially known. The author, at intervals, for nearly half a century, has sought to find and preserve historical data omitted in other works, or incorrectly stated by them. Ours is not like the history of any other State of the Union, settled and fostered by a progressive people and government, and aided by great interior resources and means of transportation of which practically Texas had nothing. Wild barbarians infested Texas, undisturbed until its settlement by Americans, and its frontiers continued subject to all the horrors, more or less extensive, of savage warfare from the beginning in 1822, to its practical cessation in 1876, a period of fifty four years, beside the period from 1835 to 1845, inclusive, of a state of war with Mexico. Her history, taken as a whole, is unique and unlike that of any other member of the Union. To be understood it must be correctly given and carefully read. The author is enabled to correct many errors-some of minor and a few of material importance-heretofore published, and to embrace numerous important facts never before given in any work; and yet, much of interest, in the very nature of things, resulting from the want of official records, the absence in large part of current newspaper files, and the failing memory of many old and patriotic men, must remain untold. Eschewing fiction and exaggeration and guided by the spirit of truth and justice this work is given to the people of Texas by her loyal son."
Download or read book Betrayal in Dallas written by Mark North and published by Skyhorse. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas by Mafia contract killers hired by Louisiana mob boss Carlos Marcello. Longtime local district attorney Henry Wade, an LBJ crony who would have sole jurisdiction over the prosecution of those responsible, had been corrupted by the local Civello crime family. Lyndon B. Johnson, while a US senator during the 1950s, had accepted bribes from the same mobsters so that they could avoid deportation. With incredible detail and documentation, Mark North pieces the puzzle together to reveal how, in late 1961, US Attorney General Robert Kennedy and his brother John, who hated LBJ, initiated a covert Organized Crime Task Force investigation of the Civello mob in Dallas. Johnson, through Wade and local federal officials he had placed in power, learned of the plan and cooperated with the Civello mob to have JFK killed. Johnson did this, in part, because he had the power to control any subsequent federal investigation via FBI director J. Edgar Hoover. After the Mafia killed JFK, Johnson stopped Robert Kennedy’s prosecution of the Dallas Mafia. Betrayal in Dallas is unlike any book written on the JFK assassination. Because its conclusions are based on classified federal documents unknown to the public and research community, it will startle and convince all those who read it. Betrayal in Dallas is what the American people have been waiting for since November 22, 1963.
Download or read book Age of Betrayal written by Jack Beatty and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2008-04-08 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Age of Betrayal is a brilliant reconsideration of America's first Gilded Age, when war-born dreams of freedom and democracy died of their impossibility. Focusing on the alliance between government and railroads forged by bribes and campaign contributions, Jack Beatty details the corruption of American political culture that, in the words of Rutherford B. Hayes, transformed “a government of the people, by the people, and for the people” into “a government by the corporations, of the corporations, and for the corporations.” A passionate, gripping, scandalous and sorrowing history of the triumph of wealth over commonwealth.
Download or read book Death in Texas written by Carlton Smith and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2007-04-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Was he his brother's keeper? Robert and Doris Angleton seemed to have the perfect life. Until she was coldly murdered in her own home, shot thirteen times in the head, chest, and abdomen... Suddenly the ideal husband seemed anything but perfect: he was jailed, accused of hiring his older brother, Roger, to kill his wife for money-- possibly as much as $2 million. However, without the crucial eyewitness testimony of Roger-- who soon committed suicide in a Houston jail cell-- the case against Robert rested entirely on circumstantial evidence. But the facts raise more questions than answers... * Doris Angleton-- deeply involved in a secret love affair-- had asked her husband for a divorce, which might have exposed him as a tax-skipping millionaire bookie and favored police informant... * Extensive handwritten and typewritten notes, coupled with a secretly taped conversation between Roger and another man outlining the murder, were found in a briefcase Roger Angleton was carrying when he was arrested in Las Vegas, Nevada. However, it was later concluded that the second voice on the tape was not Robert's... * Also in Roger's briefcase: $64,000 in cash, along with a money wrapper with Robert's fingerprint on it... * Ultimately Roger confessed to the murder in his suicide note, exonerating his brother of any guilt... A Texas jury came to one conclusion. Read this fascinating true-crime account of greed, deception, and cold-blooded murder-- and decide for yourself. With eight pages of shocking photos!
Download or read book Betrayal in Dallas written by Mark North and published by Skyhorse Publishing Inc.. This book was released on 2011-07 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: North demystifies the most infamous crime of the twentieth century, arguing that President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas by Mafia contract killers hired by Louisiana mob boss Carlos Marcello. Critical characters emerge in the plot to murder JFK: Henry Wade, the long-time district attorney turned corrupt; Lyndon B. Johnson himself, who, while a senator in the 1950s, accepted bribes from the mob; corrupt FBI director J. Edgar Hoover; and more. In late 1961, U.S. Attorney General Robert Kennedy and his brother John, initiated a covert Organized Crime Task Force investigation of the Civello mob in Dallas with the understanding that destroying the Dallas Mafia would also destroy LBJ. Johnson, through Wade and other local federal officials he had placed in power, learned of the plan and cooperated with the Civello mob to have JFK killed. North's conclusions are based on classified federal documents.

Book Synopsis Friendly Betrayal by : José Antonio López
Download or read book Friendly Betrayal written by José Antonio López and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2017-04-19 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a different perspective than that found in mainstream US and Texas history because it acquaints readers with pre-1836 people, places, and events. The title Friendly Betrayal aims to capture the Spanish Mexican Texans disappointment when they (1) first welcomed US immigrants to Mexico (Texas) as fellow Mexicans and (2) how (after 1836) the growing Anglo Saxon majority treated our ancestors as foreigners in their own homeland. Part I contains a fictionalized storyline that delves into the initial blending of Native American and Spanish European cultures that produced todays mestizo people. Due to their genetic cultural (not political) ties to Mexico, this group (generally called Mexican Americans in the United States) continues to strongly maintain, defend, and preserve their unique identity, history, and heritage on this side of the border. Part II contains supporting background information.
Download or read book Olympus, Texas written by Stacey Swann and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2022-05-17 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Good Morning America Book Club Pick! • A bighearted novel with technicolor characters, plenty of Texas swagger, and a powder keg of a plot in which marriages struggle, rivalries flare, and secrets explode, all with a clever wink toward classical mythology. For fans of Madeline Miller's Circe: "The Iliad meets Friday Night Lights in this muscular, captivating debut" (Oprah Daily). The Briscoe family is once again the talk of their small town when March returns to East Texas two years after he was caught having an affair with his brother's wife. His mother, June, hardly welcomes him back with open arms. Her husband's own past affairs have made her tired of being the long-suffering spouse. Is it, perhaps, time for a change? Within days of March's arrival, someone is dead, marriages are upended, and even the strongest of alliances are shattered. In the end, the ties that hold them together might be exactly what drag them all down. An expansive tour de force, Olympus, Texas cleverly weaves elements of classical mythology into a thoroughly modern family saga, rich in drama and psychological complexity. After all, at some point, don't we all wonder: What good is this destructive force we call love?
Download or read book The Texan written by Anne Carey and published by Blurb. This book was released on 2019-05-23 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is your summer novel! Easy read & a great beach book. Sex, drugs and country music dominate San Antonio, Texas in the spring of 1980. With a daddy like Bobby, Sr. no one in their small town of Buena Vista, expects bad-boy, Bobby, Jr. better known as B.J. to amount to anything, until Janet Blake, arrives on assignment for her New York-based magazine. Facing prejudice and racism, she steals B.J.'s heart, much to the chagrin of his meddlesome Mama, Peggy Sue. When B.J. fails to treat Janet right, his betrayal turns her revenge into the novel you are about to read. Of course, a little romance and murder are mixed in for good measure. Author's Note--Do opposites attract? Sometimes Texans and those of us from the Great Lakes State mix like oil and water. In the eighties, I moved to the Texas Hill Country from Detroit, Michigan. On more than one occasion, I was asked to join the KKK. I discovered the Civil War still divided me from some of my fellow Americans because as a Northerner, Southerners considered me a Yankee. An outsider and a woman, I felt the oppression of prejudice for the first time. This novel is very loosely based on some of my experiences in Texas. I hope you enjoy this easy read, filled with satire and humor.

Download or read book Gangster Tour of Texas written by T. Lindsay Baker and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2011-08-31 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bonnie and Clyde, Machine Gun Kelly, the Newton Boys, the Santa Claus Bank Robbers. . . . During the era of gangsters and organized crime, Texas hosted its fair share of guns and gambling, moonshine and morphine, ransom and robbery. The state’s crime wave hit such a level that in 1927 the Texas Bankers Association offered a reward of $5,000 for a dead bank robber; no reward was given for one captured alive. Veteran historian T. Lindsay Baker brings his considerable sleuthing skills to the dark side, leading readers on a fascinating tour of the most interesting and best preserved crime scenes in the Lone Star State. Gangster Tour of Texas traces a trail of crime that had its beginnings in 1918, when the Texas legislature outlawed alcohol, and persisted until 1957, when Texas Rangers closed down the infamous casinos of Galveston. Baker presents detailed maps, photographs of criminals, victims, and law officers, and pictures of the crime scenes as they appear today. Steeped in solid historical research, including personal visits by the author to every site described in the book, this volume offers entertaining and informative insights into a particularly lawless period in our nation’s history. Readers interested in true crime, regional history, or this unique aspect of heritage tourism will derive hours of enjoyment as they follow--on the road or from their armchairs--the trail of both cops and robbers in Gangster Tour of Texas. “Baker knows how to spin a yarn that keeps his readers engrossed; knows that it does history no harm to write it so folks will enjoy many illustrations, maps, and pictures of outlaws, lawmen, victims, witnesses, and crime scenes that accompany each story. Plus, his picture captions are as informative as his story narratives."--Bill Neal, author, Getting Away with Murder on the Texas Frontier
