Purpose and Scope. It is the purpose of this bulletin to present the results of certain tests made on four reinforced concrete buildings and one reinforced concrete test structure. These tests were made with a view of getting experimental information on the action of the concrete and the reinforcing bars in floor slabs of the flat slab type of building construction. Data were obtained also on the bending action of the supporting columns. Efforts were made to find the distribution of stress in the bands of reinforcement both laterally and longitudinally, and that of the compressive stresses in the concrete on the opposite face of the slab; these in the regions of both the negative bending moment and of the positive bending moment. The description of the methods used in making the test is limited to those features which are different from the methods used in the tests described in Bulletin No.64 of the University of Illinois Engineering Experiment Station, "Tests of Reinforced Concrete Buildings Under Load," and from the methods described in a paper on "The Use of the Strain Gage in the Testing of Materials." It will be appreciated that the circumstances surrounding the floor test of a building are unfavorable to securing definite and uniform quantitative results. The structure is not homogeneous. There is a distribution of the resistance afforded by the structure to parts beyond the portion which is loaded. Effects of changes in temperature are troublesome. The stresses developed in the steel and in the concrete are small and there is considerable variation between parts which are supposedly similar in action. The conditions under which the measurement of deformation must be made are unfavorable to securing exactness. The location and presence of the loading material also add to the difficulties of the work. It will be seen that it is impracticable to obtain complete information or to formulate conclusions which are entirely definite. It is the purpose of the Station to carry on investigations along various lines of engineering and to study problems of importance to professional engineers and to the manufacturing, railway, mining, constructional, and industrial interests of the State. The control of the Engineering Experiment Station is vested in the heads of the several departments of the College of Engineering, These constitute the Station Staff, and with the Director, determine the character of the investigations to be undertaken. The work is carried on under the supervision of the Staff, sometimes by research fellows as graduate work, sometimes by members of the instructional staff of the College of Engineering, but more frequently by investigators belonging to the Station crops. The results of these investigations are published in the form of bulletins, which record mostly the experiments of the Station's own staff of investigators. There will also be issued from time to time in the form of circulars, compilations giving the results of the experiments of engineers, industrial works, technical institutions, and governmental testing departments. It is the purpose of this paper to present information which correlates the results of tests of a fairly large number of slab structures with the results of analysis, so that the report may aid in the formulation of building regulations for slabs. The field of this report may be divided into three parts: (a) analysis of moments and stresses in slabs, (b) study of the relation between the observed and the computed steel stresses in reinforced-concrete beams, made for the purpose of assisting in the interpretation of slab tests, (c) a study of the test results for at slabs with a view of comparing \the moments of the observed steel stresses with the bending moments indicated by the analysis, and of estimating the factor of safety. The mathematical analysis is the work of Mr. Westergaard. The analysis of the beam tests to show the relation between the computed and the observed stresses is the work of Mr. Slater. It is believed that the machine used and described in the following pages removes the undesirable conditions mentioned above, and because of its cheapness, simplicity and ease of manipulation may be of some value. The number of slabs tested was restricted by the size of the room available for making, storing and testing the specimens, and by the time required to design the apparatus, make the slabs and perform the experiment. It being undesirable to install a crane or hoist, the size of the slabs was determined by the weight that could be readily moved and lifted with crow - bars and levers Accordingly, only a few slabs have been tested and insufficient data is at hand for a proper comparison and conclusion. It is hoped that the difficulties encountered in the conduct of the test and discussed in the following pages, may be of some service. This bulletin contains 18 papers that were presented in three sessions as part of an international symposium held in Philadelphia, Pa., USA, on October 25, 2016. The symposium was co-organized by the punching shear sub-committee of ACI 445 and by fib Working Party 2.2.3 (Punching and Shear in Slabs) with the objectives of not only disseminating information on this important design subject but also promoting harmonization among the various design theories and treatment of key aspects of punching shear design. The papers are organized in the same order they were presented in the symposium. The symposium honored Professor Emeritus Neil M. Hawkins (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA), whose contributions through the years in the field of punching shear of structural concrete slabs have been paramount. The papers cover key aspects related to punching shear of structural concrete slabs under different loading conditions, the study of size effect on punching capacity of slabs, the effect of slab reinforcement ratio on the response and failure mode of slabs, without and with shear reinforcement, and its implications for the design and formulation in codes of practice, an examination of different analytical tools to predict the punching shear response of slabs, the study of the post-punching response of concrete slabs, the evaluation of design provisions in modern codes based on recent experimental evidence and new punching shear theories, and an overview of the combined efforts undertaken jointly by ACI 445 and fib WP 2.2.3 to generate test result databanks for the evaluation and calibration of punching shear design recommendations in North American and international codes of practice.

The complete text for the course in Reinforced Concrete Construction is in three volumes: one on the fundamentals, one on the detailed design of retaining walls and buildings, and one on the detailed design of bridges and miscellaneous structures. The present volume on fundamentals omits, for simplicity, the flat-slab type of floor construction-a subject reserved for thorough treatment under the heading of concrete floors in Volume II. The text is intended to be supplemented with such material as is suited to the special needs of the individual student. Information on the subject has been drawn from many sources but it should be stated that the text-books, "Principles of Reinforced Concrete Construction" by Turneaure and Maurer and "Concrete Plain and Reinforced" by Taylor and Thompson have been referred to constantly. ' The author wishes to express his indebtedness to Mr. F. C. Thiessen for his excellent work in preparing the illustrations and for his help with the computations.
