Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two series of reinforced concrete beams were made and exposed to severe natural weathering at Treat Island, Maine. Variables under study were thickness of concrete cover over and tensile stress in the reinforcing steel, position of the steel, and type of concrete and steel used. Results after 15 winters of exposure of the first series of beams (Series A) indicated that the air-entrained beams were significantly more resistant to the weathering that the nonair-entrained beams, and that the beams with reinforcing steel having deformations conforming to ASTM Standard A 305 were more resistant to the weathering than those with reinforcing steel having old-style deformations. Results after 12 winters of exposure of the second series of beams (Series B) indicated that more exposure is needed to produce deterioration sufficient to permit unambiguous conclusions.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tests of Reinforced Concrete, Buildings Under Load The Engineering Experiment Station was established by act of the Board of Trustees, December 8, 1903. It is the purpose of the Station to carry on investigations along various lines of engineering and to study problems of importance to professional engineers and to the manufacturing, railway, mining, constructional, and industrial interests of the State. The control of the Engineering Experiment Station is vested in the heads of the several departments of the College of Engineering, These constitute the Station Staff, and with the Director, determine the character of the investigations to be undertaken. The work is carried on under the supervision of the Staff, sometimes by research fellows as graduate work, sometimes by members of the instructional staff of the College of Engineering, but more frequently by investigators belonging to the Station crops. The results of these investigations are published in the form of bulletins, which record mostly the experiments of the Station's own staff of investigators. There will also be issued from time to time in the form of circulars, compilations giving the results of the experiments of engineers, industrial works, technical institutions, and governmental testing departments. The volume and number at the top of the title page of the cover are merely arbitrary numbers and refer to the general publications of the University of Illinois; above the title is given the number of the Engineering Experiment Station bulletin or circular which should be used in referring to these publications. For copies of bulletins, circulars or other information address the Engineering Experiment Station, Urbana, Illinois. Book excerpt: The objectives of the investigation were to design and model test a blast-resistant reinforced concrete slab system serving as the roof of a basement shelter area. The slab system was designed to offer sufficient radiation and blast protection to insure a survival probability for its occupants of 85 to 95 percent for a fa 15-psi airblast overpressure loading. Static and dynamic tests were conducted on two 1/4-scale models of a prototype shelter. The prototype shelter, as designed, has a reinforced concrete flat slab roof consisting of three 18-foot spans in each direction supported by four interior columns and by a continuous wall around the perimeter. The model included the perimeter walls and different panel configurations which would influence the load-carrying capacity of the prototype structure. The slab system was designed using the empirical method of the 1963 American Concrete Institute Code with modifications to account for the dynamic loading effects. (Author).

Development of Iterative Analysis Procedure and Tests of Beams Reinforced with Steel Aluminum, and Fiber Glass, with and Without Helical Compressive Reinforcement written by and published by . Book excerpt: The report outlines a general iteration analysis procedure for estimating the flexural strength, the moment rotation, and the load-deflection characteristics of reinforced concrete members with arbitrary cross section and arbitrary reinforcement (but symmetrical about the plane containing the applied loads). The method is based on the traditional assumptions made in elementary beam theory and on the actual stress-strain relations of the reinforcement and concrete as determined in standard tests but does not specify compressive strain for concrete. Results of tests on 11 simply supported beams of 6-ft span reinforced with single or multiple layers of high-strength steel, aluminum, and fiber-glass rods, both with and without helical confining reinforcement in the compression zone, are described and compared with analytical results. Agreement of theory and experiment was considered satisfactory in the majority of tests. It was also found that: (a) Helical compressive reinforcement significantly increased the ductility of all beams and the load-carrying capacity of 'overreinforced' beams. (b) Deformed fiber-glass rods developed good bond with concrete, enabling the fiber-glass-reinforced beams to exhibit higher ultimate moments than their high-strength steel-reinforced counterparts, despite deflections that were two or more times larger than those of the steel-reinforced beams. (c) The ultimate concrete compressive strain measured on the top beam surface preceding the formation of first spalls is a function of the strain gradient and varied from 0.003 to 0.007, depending on the strain gradient.
