This study used a questionnaire and compared answers among groups. The analysis indicated that students with learning disabilities have a statistically significant difference on trait, F(1, 143) = 9.83, p = .002, and test scores, F(1, 142) = 11.97, p = .001, when compared to students without disabilities. This study found that anxiety statistically significantly affects college students with learning disabilities in terms of age, years in school, gender, perception of grades, self-reported anxiety ratings, feelings of control, and Office of Disability experience. This study informs future research regarding many variables affecting college students with learning disabilities.

Book excerpt: For students in general, test-taking strategies have been successful in increasing test performance and reducing test anxiety. However, there is a lack of research on college students with learning disabilities use of test-taking strategies. This population is especially in need of test-taking strategy instruction for several reasons. First, college students with learning disabilities show fewer test-taking skills in general than their peers without disabilities. Second, they also show more instances of test anxiety than their peers without disabilities. Third, many college students with learning disabilities use accommodations such as extended test time throughout their college careers. While accommodating students in many cases is necessary to provide equal access to educational opportunities, college students with learning disabilities may also require effective test-taking skills to help them clearly demonstrate what they have learned during an extended time testing situation. One specific approach, the Test-Taking Strategy, involves the use of the mnemonic device PIRATES and has been successful in improving the test scores of adolescents with learning disabilities. The implications of teaching this strategy to the college population required further investigation. This study assessed the application of the Test-Taking Strategy (PIRATES), as well as the impact that the Test-Taking Strategy (PIRATES) had on performance prompt scores, test anxiety, and use of extended test time for college students with learning disabilities. Results of a multiple baseline design suggested that the Test-Taking Strategy (PIRATES) was an effective intervention for these students.

To explore this, students were randomly assigned to one of two conditions, taking the paper-pencil version of the WISC-V and then the electronic version four to six weeks later (Condition 1), or taking the electronic version and the paper-pencil version (Condition 2). After each WISC-V students completed a Test Anxiety Inventory questionnaire to explore how their anxiety differed between the two conditions. These include social isolation, peer rejection, stress, anxiety, lower grade point average and academic achievement. Despite these challenges, an increasing number of students with SLD are pursuing postsecondary education. Given that SLD represents a life-long disability, students continue to face social, emotional and academic challenges during their postsecondary education. One of the most prevalent emotional challenges reported is anxiety, both generalized anxiety and test anxiety. In the 1980s, a self-determination initiative was promoted by the United States Office of Special Education. Scholars in the field of special education began to do extensive research on interventions and services having students practice self-determined behavior. One of the leading scholars, Dr. Michael Wehmeyer, developed the functional self-determination theory (Wehmeyer, 2003) emphasizing acting in a self-determined manner which includes autonomy, psychological empowerment, self-regulation, and self-realization. Extensive research has found interventions that promote self-determination among students with disabilities yields results in students experiencing improved quality of life, academic success, self-advocacy, and self-regulation skills. Given the prevalence of generalized anxiety and test anxiety in students with SLD, it is important to consider how a co-occurring disorder may affect an individual's ability to be self-determined. The goals of this study were to investigate whether anxiety and disability status were predictors of self-determination and to investigate whether college students with SLD have higher or lower levels of anxiety, test anxiety, and self-determination compared to their peers without disabilities.

Book excerpt: This study examined the role played by stereotype threat in the test performance of undergraduates with and without learning disabilities (LD). Stereotype threat (Steele & Aronson, 1995) has been shown to diminish the performance of various ethnic and gender groups to whom negative, ability-related stereotypes apply, presumably by activating interfering concerns about fulfilling these stereotypes. However, the possible role of stereotype threat in the performance of students with LD has not been examined, despite the fact that this group appears to meet the criteria for susceptibility to stereotype threat. A total of 94 students (31 with LD, 63 controls) at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor and the University of Wisconsin-Madison were presented with a test consisting of very difficult Verbal Graduate Record Exam questions. Approximately half of these students were presented the test with instructions designed to invoke stereotype threat (i.e., characterizing the test as an assessment of "verbal reasoning and reading abilities"), while the other half were presented the test with instructions designed to reduce stereotype threat (i.e., characterizing the test as an assessment of "stylistic variations in problem-solving"). This manipulation produced a partial demonstration of stereotype threat in undergraduates with LD. As predicted by stereotype-threat theory, students with LD spent more time per item in the stereotype-threat condition than control participants, and the two groups' time per item did not differ in the reduced-threat condition (in which students with LD spent significantly less time per item). However, contrary to expectation and the primary hypothesis for this study, the increased efficiency afforded to participants with LD by the reduced-threat condition was not reflected in their overall performance. Reasons for this discontinuity are discussed. Also discussed are the mediating roles of evaluation apprehension, state test anxiety, cognitive interference, and stereotype- and self-doubt activation. The data provided weak support for evaluation apprehension and state test anxiety as mediating variables of stereotype threat. Finally, the relationship between participants' test performance and their level of identification with reading, entity versus incremental view of intelligence, meta-stereotype of learning disability, English ACT score, testing-group size, and endorsement/belief of the stereotype-threat manipulation are also discussed.
