Se fino a qualche anno fa si discuteva del carattere essenzialmente interdisciplinare della traduzione, oggi si preferisce definirla una multidisciplina, termine che intende riflettere sia l’autonomia disciplinare del settore, recentemente consolidata, sia la pluralità di approcci e prospettive che lo contraddistinguono. Il volume è interamente dedicato al ramo teorico della traduzione: la selezione corposa di saggi di argomento teorico che hanno segnato il dibattito contemporaneo sulla traduzione è illustrata mediante una panoramica critica che si esprime in modo tematico. In particolare si analizza quella modalità consolidata che è l’elaborazione degli apporti provenienti da settori disciplinari affini alla traduzione, elaborazione che consente alla nuova disciplina di assorbire e far propri i fermenti provenienti da campi svariati quali linguistica, studi culturali e di genere, letteratura, sociologia e filosofia. Il taglio tematico assunto dalla raccolta rappresenta una modalità di sistematizzazione – che si presta ad essere utilizzata anche a fini didattici – di una pluralità che rischia di essere percepita come caotica se non è affiancata da una ricostruzione attenta degli scambi intersettoriali che si realizzano all’interno delle teorie contemporanee. Solo una prospettiva di questo genere è in grado di restituire alla traduzione la sua posizione di estremo rilievo nel quadro delle discipline che studiano l’evoluzione del pensiero umano.

Book excerpt: Translation Translation contributes to current debate on the question of translation dealt with in an interdisciplinary perspective, with implications not only of a theoretical order but also of the didactic and the practical orders. In the context of globalization the question of translation is fundamental for education and responds to new community needs with reference to Europe and more extensively to the international world. In its most obvious sense translation concerns verbal texts and their relations among different languages. However, to remain within the sphere of verbal signs, languages consist of a plurality of different languages that also relate to each other through translation processes. Moreover, translation occurs between verbal languages and nonverbal languages and among nonverbal languages without necessarily involving verbal languages. Thus far the allusion is to translation processes within the sphere of anthroposemiosis. But translation occurs among signs and the signs implicated are those of the semiosic sphere in its totality, which are not exclusively signs of the linguistic-verbal order. Beyond anthroposemiosis, translation is a fact of life and invests the entire biosphere or biosemiosphere, as clearly evidenced by research in “biosemiotics”, for where there is life there are signs, and where there are signs or semiosic processes there is translation, indeed semiosic processes are translation processes. According to this approach reflection on translation obviously cannot be restricted to the domain of linguistics but must necessarily involve semiotics, the general science or theory of signs. In this theoretical framework essays have been included not only from major translation experts, but also from researchers working in different areas, in addition to semiotics and linguistics, also philosophy, literary criticism, cultural studies, gender studies, biology, and the medical sciences. All scholars work on problems of translation in the light of their own special competencies and interests.

An author whose works have appeared in many languages, Eco is also the translator of Gérard de Nerval's Sylvie and Raymond Queneau's Exercices de style from French into Italian. In Experiences in Translation he draws on his substantial practical experience to identify and discuss some central problems of translation. As he convincingly demonstrates, a translation can express an evident deep sense of a text even when violating both lexical and referential faithfulness. Depicting translation as a semiotic task, he uses a wide range of source materials as illustration: the translations of his own and other novels, translations of the dialogue of American films into Italian, and various versions of the Bible. In the second part of his study he deals with translation theories proposed by Jakobson, Steiner, Peirce, and others. Overall, Eco identifies the different types of interpretive acts that count as translation. An enticing new typology emerges, based on his insistence on a common-sense approach and the necessity of taking a critical stance.

Book excerpt: This book examines the translations carried out by Italian novelist Beppe Fenoglio, one of the most important Italian writers of the twentieth century. It stems from the acknowledgement that Beppe Fenoglio’s translations have not been examined in the political, cultural and ideological context in which they were produced, but have been dismissed as a purely linguistic exercise. The author examines Fenoglio’s translations as culturally and ideologically informed artistic expressions, in which Fenoglio was able to give voice to his dissent towards the mainstream ideology and poetics of his times, often choosing authors and characters with whom he identified, such as Shakespeare, Milton and Marlowe. The interaction between the theories of Translation Studies, Literary Theory and Adaptation Studies foregrounds the centrality of the role of the translator, showing how Fenoglio’s ideology and poetics were clearly visible both in the selection of the texts he translated and in his translation strategies.
