By the nineteenth-century nadir of its colonial reach, Spanish identity came to be enacted in terms of a minstrelized Gitano, a hybrid of American and Spanish representations of Blackness. The imagined Gypsy about which flamenco imagery turns dances on a knife's edge delineating Black and White worlds. The bobo's precarious state of confusion, appealingly comic but also holding the pathos of the ultimate stakes of his decision--heaven or hell, safety or extermination--opens up a teeming view of the embodied politics of colonial exploitation and creole identity formation. Flamenco's Sonidos Negros live in this eternal moment of bulla, the confusion and ruckus that protect embodied resistance to subjugation, the lament for what has been lost, and the values and aspirations of those rendered imperceptible by enslavement and colonization"--

Mapping Marriage Law in Spanish Gitano Communities turns this tendency on its head and investigates what happens when the voices of each discipline are invited to speak to each other. Susan Drummond forges this hybrid form of comparative work through small- and large-scale studies of Gitano marriage law as it emerges in a Western European state, in a modern urban centre, and in particular communities and families. Drummond’s mapping of Gitano marriage law is grounded in ethnographic fieldwork in Andalucia. The study draws initially from the tradition of comparative law to focus on the emergence of Spanish state family law in a predominantly national and international context. Drummond then adopts the role of legal anthropologist to examine a particular legal culture that exists within, and also beyond, the Spanish state: that of the Gitanos and the transnational Roma. Ultimately, she brings the international, national, and cultural dimensions of law into play with one another and contemplates how all of these influences bear on the spirit of Andalusian Gitano marriage law. The result is an ethos of marriage law in a thoroughly mixed legal jurisdiction. Recent decades have seen a surge of interest on the effects of sound the urban space and its population. These studies analyse how sound generates identities that are often fragmentary and mutually conflicting. They also explore the ways in which sound triggers campaigns against the negative effects of noise on the nerves and health of the population. Little research has been carried out about the impact of sound and music in areas of broader social and political concern such as social aid, hygiene and social control. Based on a detailed study of Madrid from the 1850s to the 1930s, Discordant Notes argues that sound and music have played a key role in structuring the transition to modernity by helping to negotiate social attitudes and legal responses to problems such as poverty, insalubrity, and crime. Attempts to control the social groups that own unwanted musical practices such as organ grinding and flamenco performances in taverns raised awareness about public hygiene, alcoholism and crime, and triggered legal reform in these areas. In addition to scapegoating, marginalising and persecuting these musical practices, the authorities and the media used workhouse bands as instruments of social control to spread "aural hygiene" across the city.
