This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Monetary Fund’s Executive Board regularly reviews progress and developments under the Data Standards Initiatives. The last review—Eighth Review—undertaken in February 2012 introduced the Special Data Dissemination Standard (SDDS) Plus. In light of the long experience under the Data Standards Initiatives established in the mid-1990s, this review takes a longer term retrospective on what has been achieved so far, and highlights some of the lessons learned. What is evident is the contrast between the progress of countries with more advanced dissemination practices (SDDS and SDDS Plus), and the slow pace of improvement under the General Data Dissemination System (GDDS).

Book Synopsis The Special Data Dissemination Standard: Guide for Subscribers and Users by : International Monetary Fund. Statistics Dept.
Download or read book The Special Data Dissemination Standard: Guide for Subscribers and Users written by International Monetary Fund. Statistics Dept. and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2014-01-07 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) launched the data standards initiatives to enhance member countries’ data transparency and to promote their development of sound statistical systems. The need for data standards was highlighted by the financial crises of the mid-1990s, in which information deficiencies were seen to play a role. Under the data standards initiatives, the IMF established the Special Data Dissemination Standard (SDDS) in 1996 to provide guidance to countries that have or seek access to capital markets to disseminate key data so that users in general, and financial market participants in particular, have adequate information to assess the economic situations of individual countries. The SDDS not only prescribes that subscribers disseminate certain data categories, but also prescribes that subscribers disseminate the relevant metadata to promote public knowledge and understanding of their compilation practices with respect to the required data categories. In 1997, the IMF introduced under the initiatives the General Data Dissemination System (GDDS) to provide a framework for countries that aim to develop their statistical systems, within which they can work toward disseminating comprehensive and reliable data and, eventually, meet SDDS requirements. At the Eighth Review of the Fund’s Data Standards Initiatives in February 2012, the IMF’s Executive Board approved the SDDS Plus as an upper tier of the Fund’s data standards initiatives. The SDDS Plus is open to all SDDS subscribers and is aimed at economies with systemically important financial sectors.

This book was released on 2005-01-07 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Data Standards Initiatives, the SDDS and the GDDS, have achieved the goals the Executive Board set in its Fifth Review of July 2003. The staff sees the next three years as a period of consolidating these gains by maintaining the credibility of the SDDS through improved monitoring of countries’ observance of its requirements, and further integrating both the SDDS and GDDS under the Fund’s Data Quality Program (DQP) by aligning their structure with the Fund’s Data Quality Assessment Framework (DQAF). The staff proposes to include no new data categories in the SDDS and GDDS. Instead, the staff proposes to deepen descriptive information on how countries cover oil and gas activities and products in selected existing data categories.

Book Synopsis IMF Data Standards Initiatives--A Consultative Approach to Enhancing Global Data Transparency by : Anne Y. Kester
Download or read book IMF Data Standards Initiatives--A Consultative Approach to Enhancing Global Data Transparency written by Anne Y. Kester and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2006-04 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the IMF launched the data standards initiatives a decade ago, 145 of its 184 member countries have participated. This 80 percent participation rate reaffirms the importance countries place on data transparency in the globalized economy, which the initiatives promote. The wide participation can be attributed to the consultative process that has allowed for the development of a coherent program that takes account of countries' capabilities, delineates clear responsibilities between the IMF and participating countries, and establishes effective monitoring procedures to ensure the credibility of the standards for policymakers, capital markets, and the general public. The approach has also provided checks and balances and fostered accountability. The initiatives may provide insights for the promotion of similar international standards.

The SDDS Plus also requires adherents to disseminate metadata to promote public knowledge and understanding of their compilation practices with respect to the required data categories. During the Ninth Review of the Fund’s data Standards Initiatives in May 2015 executive directors supported changing the transition period to meet all SDDS Plus requirements to five years after the adherence date. On July 1, 2015, the Executive Board approved the proposed change. The existing rules governing the SDDS Plus are superseded by the new SDDS Plus legal text.
Book Synopsis International Reserves and Foreign Currency Liquidity by : Anne Y. Kester
Download or read book International Reserves and Foreign Currency Liquidity written by Anne Y. Kester and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2001-10-23 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International financial crises in the late 1990s revealed that deficiencies in countrieѕђة́ international reserves and related information made it difficult to anticipate and respond to crises by obscuring financial weaknesses and imbalances. This volume sets forth an innovative framework to assess countrieѕђة́ international reserves and foreign currency liquidity. The framework takes account of official balance sheet and off-balance-sheet financial activities, future and potential demand for foreign exchange to meet official obligations, the availability of official foreign currency assets to meet such demand, and official risk exposure to exchange rate fluctuations. This work clarifies what international reserves are, and how international reserves and related information should be strengthened to promote informed decision making in the public and private sectors, thereby helping improve the functioning of global financial markets.

Book Synopsis Review of the IMF's Communications Strategy by : International Monetary Fund
Download or read book Review of the IMF's Communications Strategy written by International Monetary Fund and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2014-06-30 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The framework guiding the IMF’s communications—established by the Executive Board in 2007—has enabled the institution to respond flexibly to the changing global context. The framework is based on four guiding principles: (i) deepening understanding and support for the Fund’s role and policies; (ii) better integrating communications into the IMF’s daily operations; (iii) raising the impact of new communications materials and technologies; and (iv) rebalancing outreach efforts to take account of different audiences. In addition, greater emphasis has been placed on strengthening internal communications to help ensure institutional coherence in the Fund’s outreach activities. Continued efforts are needed to strengthen communications going forward. Several issues deserve particular attention. First, taking further steps to ensure clarity and consistency in communication in a world where demand for Fund services continues to rise. Second, doing more to assess the impact of IMF communications and thus better inform efforts going forward. Third, engaging strategically and prudently with new media—including social media.
